cannot get rid of trojan + odd happenings on pc

Unread postby Donaghadee » February 8th, 2006, 8:47 am

hello, I'm having problems with a trojan called 'Proxy TI'.

Yesterday I had no icons in my c drive folder or in my control panel folder.

This morning I was unable to connect to the net.

I've run both AVG and the kaspersky 14 day free trial and both find the trojan but neither can get rid of it. Its found in:

A014053.CPY (Embedded object AVG says)

FS726.CAB Infected archive AVG says.

I originally had a game I was playing disappear on me the other day. Upon searching for it, it was not to be found.

I've played the game many times before without any problems (Hoyles card games).

I'm running on Windows ME

After running both AVG and Kaspersky in safe mode I was able to get icons and internet back but neither AV program says it deleted/healed or quarentined anything

Hi Donaghadee, Welcome to MalWare Removal !!

I notice that you have more than one antivirus program running ! This is very dangerous, as multiple AntiVirus Programs can interfere with one another and actually allow MORE viruses to get through.
I strongly recommend you do 1 of the following :

Enable only 1 AntiVirus to run RealTime Scanning, leave the other disabled
OR
Uninstall all but 1 of the AntiVirus programs (Start, ControlPanel, Add/Remove Programs)

You may wish to print out a copy of these instructions to follow while you complete this procedure

I need you to download some programs to aide in our fix :Do Not Run Them Yet

Download and Install CCleaner© by CCleaner.com

Download and Install Ad-aware SE© by Lavasoft
NOTE: If you have a previous version of Ad-Aware installed, during the installation of the new version (1.06) you will be prompted to uninstall or keep the older version - be sure to uninstall the previous version.
Close ALL windows except Ad-Aware SE.

Click on the world icon at the top right of the Ad-Aware SE window and let AdAware SE update the reference list for the adware and malware.
Close Adaware SE

Reboot to Safe mode
Restart your computer and immediately begin tapping the F8 key on your keyboard.
If done right a Windows Advanced Options menu will appear.
Select the Safe Mode option and press Enter

Show Hidden Files :
Open My Computer
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options
Select the View Tab.
Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK.
Click Start, Programs and Accessories and open Windows Explorer.
Select a hard drive from the left hand side of the Windows Explorer window.
Select View the Entire contents of this drive

Run HijackThis
Scan and when it finishes, put a check mark only next to these following items : (if present)

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://uk.red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cust ... _side.html

Select Options (on left)
Settings :
All options in this section are Optional. You may check any or all of these depending on your preferences!!

Select "Perform full system scan"

Click Next

If Ad-Aware SE finds bad entries, you will receive a list of what it found in the window

Click on Next and check all the boxes in the window

Click Next and OK to remove

Close AdawareSE

Reboot to Normal Mode

Kaspersky WebScanner
Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner
You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT

hello Linkmaster, if it's ok with yourself, I've printed off your instructions and I will work through them tomorrow. (Been trying to get rid of this trojan all day and a bit tired)

The Antivirus programs I have are AVG (free version) :kaspersky (14 day trial: Antivirus personal 9x. A-squared trojan finder

Current antispyware programs are Ad-aware : Spybot s & d: Spyware Blaster : Stinger.

Should I just keep avg for antivirus and the spyware programs?

I've just used panda scan and here's what it found:

Incident Status Location

Dialer:dialer.db Not disinfected C:\WINDOWS\DOWNLOADED PROGRAM FILES\msa64chk.inf
Dialer:dialer.bny Not disinfected C:\WINDOWS\pcconfig.dat
Adware:adware/comet Not disinfected Windows Registry
Dialer:Dialer.DZE Not disinfected C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\msa64chk.inf

I dont know if this is of any further help.

Thankyou for your help.

Scan process completed.

I did have problems getting Adaware to install. The new version could not delete the

Install.log.

neither could I remove it in add/remove software.

I deleted all of the Lavasoft folder in program files and run regcleaner. The was able to reinstall the new version.

I've left just AVG on the PC as suggested.

Hello Linkmaster, I followed your instructions and according to the kaspersky on line scanner nothing has been found. So, there was not a log to post to you.

Thankyou very much for your help and time. Happy national Chip week and Happy valentines.

You are Very Welcome !!

Here are a few tools that I recommend for protecting your system and keeping your system clean !!

Real Time Prevention
SpywareBlaster© by Javacool Software
Prevent the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted pests.
Block spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla/Firefox.
Restrict the actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer.
Consumes no system resources.

Download, run, check for updates, download updates, select all, protect against checked. All done. Check for updates every couple of weeks. If you have any errors running the program like a missing file see the link at the bottom of the javacool page
IESpyad© by EHowes : This will add several hundred Restricted Sites to the Restricted Site Zone in IE.

File Cleaners (temp, prefetch, cookie, etc)
2000/XP Only
ATF (Atribune Temp File) Cleaner© by Atribune
All Windows
CCleaner© by CCleaner.com

Spyware Scanners:
Ad-aware SE© by Lavasoft Scans your system for spyware and other threats
a² Scanner© by Emsi Software : Scans for Malware and Trojans on your system.

Good Free Antivirus Programs:
AVG© by Grisoft
AntiVir© by H+BEDV Datentechnik GmbH
Avast© by ALWIL Software
NOTE:Remember always have just 1 antivirus program running at a time. Having more than one running causes a conflict between the programs !! You can use one as a backup to run manually

Windows Update:
It's also very important to keep your system up to date to avoid unnecessary security risks
Windows Update

Firewalls:
If you have an "always on " internet connection, such as DSL or Cable, I recommend a Firewall.
A firewall will make your pc invisible to the outside world and will filter the outgoing and incoming traffic on your pc.
For a good idea of how vulnerable your system(s) are go to GRC
Scroll down to "Shields Up" Click on "Proceed" Then click on "Common Ports"to scan your ports.
Very good Firewalls :
ZoneAlarm Firewall© by Zone Labs
Sunbelt Kerio Personal Firewall© by Sunbelt

These next steps are optional, but will provide the greatest protection
Use ANY browser besides Internet Explorer, almost every exploit is crafted to take advantage of an IE weakness
Alternative Browsers:
FireFox© by Mozilla
Opera© by Opera Software ASA

Java Runtime Environment© Sun Microsystems. It's much more secure than Microsoft's Java Virtual Machine .

Always keep your Antivirus & Spyware Removal Tools current with the latest definitions and updates !!

Using these tools and keeping them updated will reduce the risk of future infections!!

Do you have any questions??
