Slow PC - Internet Explorer hangs before loading homepage

Unread postby RnD123 » February 26th, 2010, 6:16 pm

After success from this site in dis-infecting my on PC i am now seeking help with my mother's! She recently installed email software on this PC (namely Incredimail and/or Jedimail) and almost immediately, either through coincidence or not, noticed a severe degradation in performance. Boot-up, opening programs etc seems to take forever and Internet explorer does not work at all, I can type URLs but the mouse pointer remains as an egg-timer and the screen remains blank- fortunately the PC has MSN Explorer loaded and using this i installed Firefox. I have tried Tweaknow RegCleaner, Cleanup and added SP3 for Windows XP Home and Upgraded to IE7 (but it still just hangs!) I have copied below HJT log and Uninstall List for your perusal.

Hi RnD123,

Sorry for the delay in answering your request.
We have had more logs than we could handle in a timely manner.
If you still need help and are not receiving it elsewhere, please proceed as follows:

First, tell me whether the machine in question is on Dial-up.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove Programs Using Control Panel
From Start, Settings, Control Panel or Start, Control Panel, click Add/Remove Programs.
Highlight each Entry, as follows, one by one, if it exists, and choose Remove :
TweakNow RegCleaner
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03
AOL Spyware Protection
McAfee SecurityCenter
McAfee VirusScan

Take extra care in answering questions posed by any Uninstaller.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Run The McAfee Removal Tool MCPR.EXE
1. Download the removal tool from:
http://download.mcafee.com/products/lic ... s/MCPR.exe
2. Click Save and save the file to a folder on your computer.
3. Navigate to the folder where the file was saved.
4. Make sure all McAfee windows are closed. (Since you uninstalled it , that shouldn't be a problem).
5. Double-click MCPR.exe to run the removal tool.
Your McAfee product will not be fully removed until the system is restarted.
-----------------------------------------------------------
REBOOT (RESTART) Your Machine
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Download and Run MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware
Please go here to the Download Location, click on Download.
  • After clicking on the download and choosing Save, the "Save to location" dialog will come up.
  • Choose Desktop as the location to save the installer and click Save again.
  • You should now have a desktop icon named mbam-setup.exe. Double-click it.
  • Let it install the program where it wants to, with the default settings, and click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • If necessary, start Malwarebytes Anti-Malware again.
  • Once the program is running, select Perform Quick Scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • If it found any malware items. Check all items except items in the C:\System Volume Information folder... and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location, and post the contents in your reply.
  • The log can also be found using the "Logs" tab in the program. You can click any log listed to open its contents.
  • Recent logs are named by time/date stamp in this format : mbam-log-2010-mm-dd(hour-min-sec).txt
  • You can now delete the installer icon, named mbam-setup.exe from your desktop.

Let me know how it goes, and I will be looking for the Malwarebytes Anti-Malware log.

Askey127, thanks for your assistance.

This PC is not on dialup - it is usually on 2mb broadband at my mothers house although here I have 8mb. The machine is VERY slow - not just due to the low amount of RAM - it recently took over an hour to shut down and regularly hangs completely! Anyway, MBAM log is as below. Also, although I successfully uninstalled McAfee Virus Scan and Security Centre, MCPR claimed that Cleanup was already running and i had no other option but to cancel.

LOG:

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware 1.44

Windows 5.1.2600 Service Pack 3

RnD123
----------------------------------------------------------
Download and Install CCleaner
  • Download the CCleaner Installer from here . Choose the Slim version. You can save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on ccsetupXXX_slim.exe to start the installation of CCleaner. (XXX is the version number)
  • Click OK
  • Click Next
  • Click I agree
  • Click Next
  • Click Install
  • Once the installation has finished, click Finish
You can now delete the installer ccsetupxxx_slim.exe from your desktop.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Set Options in CCleaner and run Cleaning Scan.
Open CCleaner if it's not already running.
Do not use the Registry block to clean anything with this program. It is for experts only and it is risky.
(As a general rule, don't ever use a registry cleaner or "registry optimizer" of any kind on your machine).
  • On the Left Select Cleaner.
  • Check All the items in Internet Explorer and Windows Explorer.
  • In the System Section, check Empty Recycle Bin, Temporary Files, Clipboard, Memory Dumps, and ChkDsk File fragments.
  • In the Advanced section, don't have anything checked.
  • Click on the Options block on the left. Select Advanced.
Uncheck Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours.
  • Set Cookie Retention.
Click on the Options block on the left, then choose Cookies.
Under the Cookies to delete pane, highlight any cookies you would like to retain permanently (those companies or sites with which you regularly visit or do business), and click the right arrow > to move them to the Cookies to keep pane.
  • Run Cleaning Scan. Click on the Cleaner block on the left. Choose the Windows tab.
Click the Run Cleaner button in the lower right. This process could take a while. When CCleaner shows how much has been removed, cleaning is finished.
Exit CCleaner by clicking on the X button in the upper right of the CCleaner window.
-----------------------------------------------------------
REBOOT (RESTART) Your Machine - Sorry about that !
-----------------------------------------------
Run the RSIT Scanner
Please download the scanner from here and save it to your desktop. The icon will be named RSIT.exe
Doubleclick the RSIT icon.
When the scan is complete, two text files will open
log.txt <- this one will be maximized
info.txt <- this one will be minimized
( Both files will be saved here -> C:\rsit\ )
Copy/Paste the contents of both log.txt and info.txt into your next post please. Use two posts if you prefer.

EDIT: Based on what you are telling me, you may have to download the programs onto a flash drive from another machine, and install them so you don't have to use IE. CCleaner is available in a portable version on the same page, that will actually run from the flash drive without installing.

CCleaner ran without any issues. RSIT logs as follows. IE is not working at all on this PC so I have been using Firefox, although it is painfully slow, it eventually gets there!

Re: Slow PC - Internet Explorer hangs before loading homepage

RnD123,
Sorry about the delayed response. I did not see a notice that you had replied.
This machine is in desperate need of another 256Mb RAM card. They are VERY inexpensive.
The electronics store will need to know the model of the machine.
I don't see any malware on the system.

Until then, the next best thing to do is remove everything you can from the automatic startup category.
All the programs are still available, but are not started automatically.
The easiest program for you to manage that is a small one called Winpatrol.
With it you can remove programs from startup, and even put them back if you make a mistake.
Each program you remove from automatic startup will make the machine run a bit faster.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Let's take out a few right away and install Winpatrol for you to work with.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove Registry items with HighjackThis. Start HijackThis.
Click Do System Scan Only. When the Scan is complete, Check the following entries:
(Some of these lines may be missing)
R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - *{CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: Orange - {4E7BD74F-2B8D-469E-A1FB-F862B587B57D} - C:\PROGRA~1\orange3\orange3.dll (file missing)

O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {BA52B914-B692-46c4-B683-905236F6F655} - (no file)
O3 - Toolbar: Orange - {4E7BD74F-2B8D-469E-A1FB-F862B587B57D} - C:\PROGRA~1\orange3\orange3.dll (file missing)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [PCMService] "C:\Program Files\Dell\Media Experience\PCMService.exe"
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UpdateManager] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Sonic\Update Manager\sgtray.exe" /r
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [InstantAccess] C:\PROGRA~1\TEXTBR~1.0\Bin\INSTAN~1.EXE /h
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [RegisterDropHandler] C:\PROGRA~1\TEXTBR~1.0\Bin\REGIST~1.EXE
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [RegisterDropHandler] C:\PROGRA~1\TEXTBR~1.0\Bin\REGIST~1.EXE
O4 - Startup: reminder-ScanSoft Product Registration.lnk = C:\Program Files\TextBridge Classic 2.0\Ereg\REMIND32.EXE
O23 - Service: Google Update Service (gupdate) (gupdate) - Google Inc. - C:\Program Files\Google\Update\GoogleUpdate.exe

Make sure Every other window except HJT is closed (No other tabs showing in the bottom tray), and Click Fix Checked
Click the "X" in the upper right corner of the HiJackThis window to close it.
This means you will have to start TextBridge for your scanned documents whenever you need it from Start> All Programs.
-----------------------------------------------------------
REBOOT the machine.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Install WinPatrol - Download and Install the Free WinPatrol, and view Instructions here: http://www.winpatrol.com/winpatrol.html
- WinPatrol is an active program that drops a "Scotty Dog" icon into the system tray (right click to check/change status), allows you to monitor/edit startups, services, Browser helpers, and prompts for permission if any program tries to change your system.

Re: Slow PC - Internet Explorer hangs before loading homepage

OK, I've completed the above and the PC does seem to be a little quicker (not yet added RAM). I am still experiencing problems with IE tho, when opened I get just a white screen, if I enter a URL the egg timer appears but no progress bar at the bottom of the screen-the windows remains blank white. Can I fully un-install IE and re-install?

Thanks in advance,

Ok, how? Is IE not an integral part of Windows? Sorry, this may seem a really stupid request but i recall some time ago afriend who tried to uninstall IE and his PC crashed and had to be rebuilt from scratch. Thanks in advance.

You should make sure you have a working copy of Firefox before you do it.
Check and make sure yours accesses the Internet.

Then download the installer for Internet Explorer 8 from here (you can use IE7 for this):
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/intern ... sites.aspx
Save it to your desktop.

Now Go to Control Panel, Add/Remove programs, highlight Internet Explorer 7 and choose Remove.
Double-click the IE8 installer on your desktop and let it install itself.
Once you have Service Pack 3, as you do, and install IE8, you cannot revert back to IE7.
IE 8 is a lot better in almost every respect.
The system will not blow up.

IE8 Installer downloaded ok but from Control Panel/Add Remove Programs, the entry for IE7 does not have a button to remove. I checked Microsoft's website and used - "%windir%\ie7\spuninst\spuninst.exe" which seemed to work ok. When i first ran the IE8 installer the PC crashed to a blue screen. I rebooted and re-ran IE8 installer successfully. Starting IE8, I now get the same as before, a URL of :
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=74005
appears in the address bar but the main window remains white with the cursor an egg timer for a long period of time. Eventually the cursor returns to a pointer and although I can enter a new URL, there is no response and no error message.

I have now tried a few times to un-install and re-install IE but the same condition persists.

RnD123,
The errors may in fact have to do with the applications' size getting too large for the available memory.
I don't see any signs of malware on your system.

It's also possible that some of the AOL startup processes are trying to poach on your desired connection and browser habits.
That's not within the scope of this forum, however.

If you want to preserve the machine, I would get and install another 256Mb RAM card.
Then, if errors persist, sign in at one of the System/Hardware help forums.
