Having some issues :(

Unread postby Lur123 » February 21st, 2010, 4:01 pm

Hi guys, unfortunately having some issues lately. It started off as google searches being redirected and then tabs began to be redirected automatically. My computer then began to reset itself as the result of a pop up with a 60 second countdown, which I adverted temporarily by running "shutdown -a" in dos. As well, avg recently alerted me to two warnings, "trojan horse rootkit-agent.ef" which was white listed as well as "virus found fat-obfuscated -infected".

Below is my hijackthis log and uninstall log, thank you for any help you guys can give me.

Re: Having some issues :(

Unread postby melboy » February 27th, 2010, 12:08 pm

Hi and welcome to the MR forums. :)

I'm melboy and I am going to try to help you with your problem. Please take note of the following:

  1. I will be working on your Malware issues this may or may not solve other issues you have with your machine.
  2. The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
  3. If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to ask.
  4. Please DO NOT run any other tools or scans whilst I am helping you.
  5. It is important that you reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  6. Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.
  7. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.

Please take time to read the Malware Removal Forum Guidelines and Rules where the conditions for receiving help at this forum are explained.

Please be aware that removing Malware is a potentially hazardous undertaking. I will take care not to knowingly suggest courses of action that might damage your computer. However it is impossible for me to foresee all interactions that may happen between the software on your computer and those we'll use to clear you of infection, and I cannot guarantee the safety of your system. It is possible that we might encounter situations where the only recourse is to re-format and re-install your operating system, or to necessitate you taking your computer to a repair shop.

Because of this, I advise you to backup any personal files and folders before you start.
Backing up: What, how, where

No Reply Within 3 Days Will Result In Your Topic Being Closed!! If you need more time, please inform me.

random's system information tool (RSIT)

  • Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from HERE and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open:
    • log.txt (<<will be maximized)
    • info.txt (<<will be minimized)
  • Post both of these logs in your next reply (Sometimes you have to make several post to get the logs posted.)

Gmer

Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here.
  • Double click the .exe file. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent
  • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan...click on NO

    Image
Click the image to enlarge it
  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following ...
    • Sections
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
    • Show All (don't miss this one)
  • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish
  • Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and post it in reply
**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries

Note: Do not run any programs while Gmer is running.

In your next reply:
  1. RSIT log.txt
  2. RSIT info.txt
  3. GMER log

Hi

I see you have a copy of combofix on your C: drive. Please delete that copy and follow the instructions below.

SystemLook

Please download SystemLook by jpshortstuff from one of the links below and save it to your Desktop.
Download Mirror #1
Download Mirror #2

  • Double-click SystemLook.exe to run it.
  • Copy the content of the following codebox into the main textfield:
    Code: Select all
    :filefind
    *atapi*

  • Click the Look button to start the scan.
  • When finished, a notepad window will open with the results of the scan. Please post this log in your next reply.
Note: The log can also be found on your Desktop entitled SystemLook.txt

ComboFix (by sUBs)
Please visit this webpage for instructions for downloading and running ComboFix: Bleeping Computer ComboFix Tutorial

  • You must download it to and run it from your Desktop
  • Now STOP all your monitoring programs (Antivirus/Antispyware, Guards and Shields) as they could easily interfere with ComboFix.
For instructions on how to disable your security programs, please see this topic:
How To Temporarily Disable Your Anti-virus, Firewall And Anti-malware Programs

  • Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a log. Please save that log to post in your next reply
  • Re-enable all the programs that were disabled during the running of ComboFix..

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix on your own.
This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

Just thought I would let you know that I wont be able to reply until tomorrow as I'm away from my computer. As well, I never actually ran combofix, however I will delete it and get the new version. Thanks.

Prior to running Combofix, I exited all of my anti-virus/spy-ware programs.
After looking at the log, I realize that it states AVG was enabled.
If this interfered with the scan at all, I will redo Combofix but actually disable the programs this time - my apologies.

Here is the log:

Re: Having some issues :(

Unread postby Lur123 » March 2nd, 2010, 7:39 pm

Hello!

I had some issues with the first two steps so I didn't do the last one.

TDSS step:

- When opening TDDSKiller.exe, it said press any key to continue, however, each time I pressed a key, TDSS would close.

After this, I went onto the second step, TFC.

The scan results said that files were deleted and that my computer would be rebooted.

While rebooting, a message came up saying that Windows was unable to start up, even after pressing enter a few times for normal window start up.

Thus, I selected run windows on a setting that previously was saved and worked.

After this, I tried the TDSS document again.

This time, atapi was mentioned, saying that it had been cured and to reboot my computer, which I did.

After restarting my computer, I tried TDSS one last time, and again, with any keystroke, the entire thing closed.

I talked to my boyfriend who said not to continue on with the last step, as I have to make sure the prior ones are completed properly.

Any help would be great!

Thanks so much for everything

Hi

How's the computer running? Are you still experiencing search redirections?

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (MBAM)

As you have Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware installed on your computer. Could you please do a scan using these settings:

  • Open Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Select the Update tab
  • Click Check for Updates
  • After the update have been completed, Select the Scanner tab.
  • Select Perform Quick scan, then click on Scan
  • When done, you will be prompted. Click OK. If Items are found, then click on Show Results
  • Check all items then click on Remove Selected
  • After it has removed the items, Notepad will open. Please post this log in your next reply.

The log can also be found here:
    1. C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt
    2. Or via the Logs tab when the application is started.

Note: MBAM may ask to reboot your computer so it can continue with the removal process, please do so immediately.
Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Re-run - RSIT (Random's System Information Tool)
You should still have this program on your desktop.

  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run it.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
RSIT will start running. When done... ONLY the "C:\RSIT\log.txt"...will be reproduced. (it will be maximized)
  • Please post ONLY the "log.txt", file contents in your next reply.

I have not used my laptop too much today but so far sites have not been redirected.
However, this is often the case, where randomly it starts to do this after using Google for a while.
In the past the malware program did not find anything (before I posted on this blog)
Yesterday alerts came up on AVG about the "trojan horse generic", but none today

Thanks again!!!

Re: Having some issues :(

Hi

In the past the malware program did not find anything

Did you update it and run it like I asked in my last post? Please post the log for me.

The RSIT logs are incomplete. Navigate to C:\RSIT\log.txt
  • Double click Log.txt
  • go to Edit > Select all > Edit > copy and then paste the results back here.

SystemLook

  • Double-click SystemLook.exe to run it.
  • Copy the content of the following codebox into the main textfield:
    Code: Select all
    :filefind
    *TDSS*

  • Click the Look button to start the scan.
  • When finished, a notepad window will open with the results of the scan. Please post this log in your next reply.
Note: The log can also be found on your Desktop entitled SystemLook.txt

In your next reply:
  1. MBAM log
  2. RSIT log.txt
  3. SystemLook.txt
