hi again and thanks in advance for your help. While scanning my computer with AVG Anti-Virus Free I get this report :
C:\Users\cocca\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles\gi13bbjr.default\Mail\Local Folders\Inbox:\Facebook_Password_8a200.zip:\Facebook_Password_8a200.exe;"Identified Virus Packed.Revolt";"Infected".
The application cannot quarantine and/or repair it because the Inbox folder is too big.
I tried to see what's inside this folder (both from windows 7 and by using the cmd command) but Inbox does not seem to be a contain the "Facebook_Password_8a220.zip" and the executable file

Francesca (I hope this time I did everything right!)

Hi olinda,

Welcome to the forum.

My nickname is deltalima and I will be helping you with your computer problems.

The logs can take some time to research, so please be patient with me.

Please note the following:
  • I will working be on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • If after 3 days you have not responded to this topic, it will be closed, and you will need to start a new one.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

Please let me know if the computer is for business or for personal use.

Hi deltalima and thanks for your help. The computer is for personal use and I'll be patient, don't worry. The computer seems to be working fine, it's just that AVG log that puzzles me and makes me wonder if everything is fine ... Ciao

Hi olinda,

The file named Facebook_Password_8a200.zip is an attachment to an email in your Thunderbird Inbox. This file will not be visible to Windows Explorer or from the command prompt.

Please confirm that you have examined all the emails in your Thunderbird Inbox to attempt to locate an email with an attachment named Facebook_Password_8a200.zip .

The HijackThis log that you pasted is incomplete, please run a new scan and include the log in your next reply.

Hi olinda,

I seached thunderbird and there are no .zip files

Do you have more than one profile created within Thunderbird? If so it would be worth checking the other profiles.

I have done some research and the infected email may have the title Facebook Password Reset Confirmation. Help Centre. and the sender "Facebook Privacy Policy" security@facebook.com.

The infected email is in the Inbox folder of Thunderbird. One method to identify it would be to create another email folder within Thunderbird and move all your email from known trusted sources into that folder and then run another AVG scan and see if the infected email is still in the Inbox or in the new folder. It may be a long process but by elimination the infected email could be identified and then deleted.

Please re-open HijackThis and select Scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below (if present):

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {22BF413B-C6D2-4d91-82A9-A0F997BA588C} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)

Now close all other open windows and then click on Fix Checked. Close HijackThis.

VNC Warning

I notice that you have VNC running as a service on this computer. This is a remote access tool that allows a remote user to take control of your computer. If you are aware of this then there is no problem but if it has been installed without your knowledge we need to investigate further. Please let me know.

Ciao deltalima, as far as I know I only have 1 profile on thunderbird with several accounts.
I saw on the net some other people emails with the zip file attached (http://www.ci.corvallis.or.us/council/m ... 30736.html) and I sort of remember having received something similar a couple of months ago. But I clean my spam folder and trash basket every evening ... so I'pretty confidenta I did not keep a similar message. I will try your "email" suggestion tomorrow.

Right now I only asked Hijackthis to fix those two entries. Should I run Hijackthis again?

Last but not least I have VNC to connect to my office computer when I'm not there. Thanks again

Hi olinda,

I have done some further research and it appears that Thunderbird does not completely remove deleted items, it makes the space available for future use and so AVG may be detecting the virus in a deleted email

When you delete messages in an email program ("email client") or move them to another folder in the program, they are not yet physically removed - even emptying the Trash does not remove them. Instead, Thunderbird and other email programs simply hide the "deleted" messages and mark them as ready for physical removal

See http://kb.mozillazine.org/Compacting_folders

To compact all folders in an account manually, click the account on the left, and then click "File -> Compact Folders". Compacting an account may take from a few seconds to 10 minutes or more, depending on how much mail you have and how recently you last compacted the folders.

Please follow the above instructions to compact the mail folders and then run a fresh AVG scan to check if the infection has gone.

Right now I only asked Hijackthis to fix those two entries. Should I run Hijackthis again?

Not necessary at this stage, we will do a final scan later to ensure everything is clean.

Please let me know the results of the AVG scan after compacting the Thunderbird mail folders.

hi deltalima, the compacting did the job! Now, at least according to AVG, the computer is clean.

There was no need to move "known" emails to new folders etc. I compacted every folder I have (even drafts, outgoing mail and folders that looked empty). Then I updated AVG definitions and run a complete AVG scan. 1 hour and something later the result is that packed.revolt and the password.zip file are not there any longer. Great! And many, many thanks.

From now on I will compact my folders weekly, just in case.

Is there anything else you suggest or I can hope my computer is safe?

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

  • Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  • In Control Panel, double-click Add or Remove Programs.
  • In Add or Remove Programs,
    highlight Java(TM) 6 Update 7
    click Remove
  • Close the Add or Remove Programs and the Control Panel windows.

Create a new, clean System Restore point which you can use in case of future system problems:
  • Press Start >> All Programs >> Accessories >>System Tools >> System Restore
  • Select Create a restore point, then Next, type a name like All Clean then press the Create button and once it's done press Close
  • Now remove old, infected System Restore points:
  • Next click Start >> Run and type cleanmgr in the box and press OK
  • Ensure the boxes for Recycle Bin, Temporary Files and Temporary Internet Files are checked, you can choose to check other boxes if you wish but they are not required.
  • Select the More Options tab, under System Restore press Clean up... and say Yes to the prompt
  • Press OK and Yes to confirm

hi deltalima and thanks again. Before installing that extra software you suggest I have one last question for you: as you probably know I already have AVG and AdAware installed on my machine. Should I keep those two AND those you mention or can i disinstall mines and be happy with yours? I understand and I completely agree that security software must be run regularly and kept updated, but it would be silly to update two softwares that do the same things ...
Grazie e ciao

The most important point is to have just one antivirus installed so keep AVG.

The programs I recommended will not interfere with what you already have and will provide an extra level of protection.
