Adaware is showing that I hvae the above worm. It deletes the files but this only lasts for that session. When I reboot Adaware shows the the worm again.

You are currently using HijackThis from a temporary directory, this can cause problems.
HijackThis creates backups, these are needed in case of any recovery issues.
Please create a folder on your C:\ and give it a name (example:HJT), move HijackThis.exe to that folder. Run the program from that directory from now on.

Download and Unzip Brute Force Uninstaller© by Merijn to your desktop

Run Brute Force Uninstaller
Click the Web button to the right of the Dialog box at top
Copy and Paste the following URL into the address bar of the Download script window:

Execute the script by clicking the Execute button.

Then Reboot and post a fresh HijackThis log here

I want you to CUT the HijackThis.exe in the Temp folder, and Paste it into its own folder. You can then Delete the copied one

Show Hidden Files :
Click Start
Open My Computer
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options
Select the View Tab
Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK

Download ATF (Atribune Temp File) Cleaner© by Atribune

Go to Start, Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs and Uninstall the following : (if present)

wmplayer (this spelling only)
p2pnetworking

Reboot to Safe mode
Restart your computer and immediately begin tapping the F8 key on your keyboard.
If done right a Windows Advanced Options menu will appear.
Select the Safe Mode option and press Enter

Lets Run Brute Force Uninstaller again !

Click the Web button to the right of the Dialog box at top
Copy and Paste the following URL into the address bar of the Download script window:

Run HijackThis
Scan and when it finishes, put a check mark only next to these following items : (if present)

Hi Again

After i did what you said in your first email I reran Adaware and it deleted the alcan.a. It isn't showing the worm anymore. Neither is Microsft Antispyware or Computer Associates Pest Scan. I've rerun Hijack This and the files you wanted deleting aren't there anymore. I haven't done the next section of your instructions as I'm not sure if I should if the files are already deleted.

Go ahead and do this part to see if they are there :

Open Windows Explorer, locate and Delete the following folders or files in BOLD : (if present)

C:\Program Files\wmplayer
C:\WINDOWS\system32\p2pnetworking.exe

You can then run ATF

How is your system running now ??

Download, run, check for updates, download updates, select all, protect against checked. All done. Check for updates every couple of weeks. If you have any errors running the program like a missing file see the link at the bottom of the javacool page
IESpyad© by EHowes : This will add several hundred Restricted Sites to the Restricted Site Zone in IE.

It's also very important to keep your system up to date to avoid unnecessary security risks

Firewalls:
If you have an "always on " internet connection, such as DSL or Cable, I recommend a Firewall.
A firewall will make your pc invisible to the outside world and will filter the outgoing and incoming traffic on your pc.
For a good idea of how vulnerable your system(s) are go to GRC
Scroll down to "Shields Up" Click on "Proceed" Then click on "Common Ports"to scan your ports.

Thanks for all your help.
Everything is sorted.
I just don't understand how I got infected in the first place as I always have an up to date firewall & anti virus (Computer Associates e-trust). I run Adaware every couple of days and download all Microsoft updates. I thought I was safe - just goes to show!
