Hello and welcome to Malware Removal Forums

IMPORTANT

Whatever repairs we make, are for fixing your computer problems only and by no means should be used on another computer.
To make cleaning this machine easier:-
  • Continue to respond to this thread until I give you the All Clean!
  • Please DO NOT uninstall/install any programs unless asked to. It is more difficult when files/programs appear or disappear from the logs.
  • Please do not run any scans other than those requested and do not post any logs/reports unless specifically requested to do so.
  • Please follow all instructions in the order posted.
  • If you have any questions or do not understand instructions, please ask before continuing.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

Make an uninstall list using HijackThis
To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:
  • Start HijackThis
  • Click on the Config button
  • Click on the Misc Tools button
  • Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
  • Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Save the file to your desktop.

Please post this log on your next reply.

NEXT Download and Run: RSIT

  • Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized)

Please reply with:-
  • Uninstall log
  • RSIT logs ( info.txt and log.txt)

Hi there,

Well not seeing anything too bad malware wise at this stage. Can you give me an example of the unwanted folders that you are seeing?

I am also experiencing extremely slow speeds

First part of the problem is that your computer has quite low RAM by todays standards:-

Total RAM: 511 MB (22% free)

I think by doing the following we can improve that :)

1. IMPORTANT I notice there are signs of one or more P2P (Peer to Peer) File Sharing Programs on your computer.

µTorrent

I'd like you to read the MRU policy for P2P Programs.

Please go to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and uninstall the programs listed above (in red). Also take note that remnants of the above program/s and any other P2P program found will be removed when cleaning.

2. Multiple Anti-virus Programs
You are operating your computer with multiple Anti-virus programs running in memory at once:

Symantec AntiVirus
Avira AntiVir Personal - Free Antivirus

Anti-virus programs take up an enormous amount of your computer's resources when they are actively scanning your computer. Having two anti-virus programs running at the same time can cause your computer to run very slow, become unstable and even, in rare cases, crash. One needs to be removed.

Note Personally I would advise uninstalling the Symantec Antivirus since you are running such low RAM and it is such a huge resource hog, but the choice is yours.

At this stage I would also uninstall the following:-

    Panda ActiveScan 2.0
    Windows Defender

3. Download and Run ATF Cleaner
Download ATF (Atribune Temp File) Cleaner© by Atribune to your desktop.
Make sure that all browser windows are closed.

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    Under Main choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser,To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Once the above is done please REBOOT the computer then re run RSIT. Only one log will be produced this time, please post that in your next reply along with an update on the computers performance.

Hello

1. P2P software removed

2. I removed Symantec Antivirus, as you recommended. I was only using Symantec and NOT Avira but it was there in the Add/Remove programs list. Maybe I had installed it a while ago but when I tried to uninstall, the folder containing the files were not found, so Uninstall could not proceed. I tried to download and reinstall Avira from Cnet but it keeps asking me to reboot and installation doesn't seem to go anywhere.

Now I can't seem to install or uninstall Avira. Performance of the computer has improved tremendously but I feel 'unprotected' as there is no active anti virus now. What should I do?

3. Downloaded and Ran ATF Cleaner. Rebooted and the RSIT log is below:

Re: HJT log; help needed

Unread postby muppy03 » February 8th, 2010, 4:20 am

I feel 'unprotected' as there is no active anti virus now. What should I do?

You are unprotected, do not use the computer until we get an AV up and running apart from coming here.

The reason you had so much trouble with Avira is that it was installed on F: drive. If this is an external drive please attach before doing the following.

1. Open Hijack This and select Do a System Scan Only place a check next to the below lines if still present

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [avgnt] "F:\Avira\AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic\avgnt.exe" /min
O23 - Service: Avira AntiVir Personal - Free Antivirus Scheduler (AntiVirScheduler) - Unknown owner - F:\Avira\AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic\sched.exe (file missing)
O23 - Service: Avira AntiVir Personal - Free Antivirus Guard (AntiVirService) - Unknown owner - F:\Avira\AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic\avguard.exe (file missing)

Once selected close all windows except HJT an click on Fix Checked

2. Backup the Registry

  • Download ERUNT
  • Save it to your desktop. Right click on the downloaded file(erunt.zip) and click Extract.Follow the prompts to extract the file.
  • Now click on the folder "erunt" and find and double click on the file called Erunt.exe
  • Click OK. Then Click OK again.
  • Click save and then go to File > Exit.
This is so the registry can be restored to this point if we need it. It may take a minute. Just let it go until it's done.

3. Download and Run OTM.exe

Download OTM.exe by Old Timer and save it to your Desktop.
  • Double-click OTM.exe. (Vista users, please right click on OTM.exe and select "Run as an Administrator")
  • Copy the lines in the codebox below.
Code: Select all
:Files
C:\Documents and Settings\adil.manzoor\Application Data\uTorrent
C:\Program Files\Symantec
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec

:Services
avgio
Avgntflt
AntiVirScheduler
AntiVirService

:Commands

[EmptyTemp]
[Start Explorer]
[Reboot]

  • Return to OTM.exe, right click in the Paste Instructions for Items to be Moved window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar), and paste it in your next reply.
  • Close OTM.exe

4. Please download one free anti-virus software from one these excellent vendors NOW:

All steps completed but I lost the OTM log after it rebooted, so can't paste that here :(

Downloaded and installed Avast; I feel protected now.

Feels like a marked improvement in system performance and here's the latest HJT file:

Re: HJT log; help needed

Unread postby muppy03 » February 11th, 2010, 3:51 am

1.
I have unwanted folders and files being created in my C: drive and when I click on them it says Access Denied!

Are you still experiencing this problem? If you are can you give me an example of the folders and files being created.
Feels like a marked improvement in system performance and here's the latest HJT file:

Can you update me on any problems you might still be having?

2. Go to Start-Settings-Control Panel, click on Add remove Programs. If any of the following programs are listed there, click on the program to highlight it, and click on remove. Then close the Control Panel.

    LiveUpdate 3.0 (Symantec Corporation)

3. You should Download and Install the newest version of Adobe Reader for reading pdf files, due to the vulnerabilities in earlier versions.
All versions numbered lower than 9.2 are vulnerable.
  • Go HERE and click on AdbeRdr920_en_US.exe to download the latest version of Adobe Acrobat Reader.
  • Save this file to your desktop and run it to install the latest version of Adobe Reader.

4. Update Java Runtime

You are using an old version of Java. Sun's Java is sometimes updated in order to eliminate the exploitation of vulnerabilities in an existing version. For this reason, it's extremely important that you keep the program up to date, and also remove the older more vulnerable versions from your system. The most current version of Sun Java is: Java Runtime Environment Version 6 Update 18.
  • Go to Java Site
  • Scroll down to where it says "JDK 6 Update 18 (JDK or JRE)"
  • Click the orange Download JRE button to the right
  • Select the Windows platform from the dropdown menu
  • Read the License Agreement and then check the box that says: "I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 with JavaFX License Agreement". Click on Continue. The page will refresh
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation & save the file to your desktop
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser
  • Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs
  • Uninstall all old versions of Java (Java 3 Runtime Environment, JRE or JSE) listed below in the code box.
    Code: Select all
    Java(TM) 6 Update 16
    Java(TM) 6 Update 7
    Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6

  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u18-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version
  • After the install is complete, go into the Control Panel (using Classic View) and double-click the Java Icon. (looks like a coffee cup)
    • On the General tab, under Temporary Internet Files, click the Settings button
    • Next, click on the Delete Files button
    • There are two options in the window to clear the cache - Leave BOTH Checked
        Applications and Applets
        Trace and Log Files
    • Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE
    • Click OK to leave the Temporary Files Window
    • Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel

6. Kaspersky Online Scan
Do an online scan with >Kaspersky Online Scanner<
  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
      Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As...
  • Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button
  • Please post this log in your next reply

Please reply with:-

Due to lack of activity, this topic is now closed.

If you still require help, please open a new thread in the Infected? Virus, malware, adware, ransomware, oh my! forum, include a fresh FRST log, and wait for a new helper.
