I apologize for not responding when I asked for help previously. I was visiting my parents and left my computer. I just got it back. This will Not happen again.

Whenever I go to google and do a search, the search page comes up with the results, but whenever I click on Any of the results, I am redirected to seemingly random webpages. However, they all seem to go through bestsearchworld.com. Instead of the path that is indicated on google, I push the link, then it shows bestsearchworld.com with a bunch of additional link paths and backslashes behind bestsearchworld.com. Then I am redirected to a random, legitimate seeming website. So far it seems to only happen to google searches.

I see now that I am about to post this it seems like other people are having the same thing. I guess it is a widespread nasty one.

Can you please please help me? MacAfee does nothing. You people are absolutely saints for being here to do this kind of thing. Please help.

Hello and welcome back to Malware Removal Forums

My handle is shinybeast and I will be assisting you in the removal of malware your computer may have.

Apologies for the delay.

Please follow these guidelines as we work to clean your computer.
  • Read through the instructions before you perform them and if you have questions please ask before you perform them. Please do not guess. I will be happy to clarify or explain.
  • Perform all instructions in the order given.
  • Stick with the process until I give you an "all clean." If the symptoms are gone, it does not necessarily mean your computer is safe and secure.
  • The instructions assume you are using an account with administrator privileges.
  • Do not run any other tools to remove malware while we are working.
  • Post all responses in a reply to this topic - Please do not start a new topic.
  • If your security software throws up warnings about some of these tools, please allow these tools to run, they are safe.
  • If you have not done so, please take time to read the Malware Removal Forum Guidelines and Rules and How to get help at this forum where the conditions for receiving help at this forum are explained.
NOTE: I am in training here at Malware Removal University.
I must get my replies to you approved by a malware expert which means it could take slightly longer to get back to you.
Your patience is appreciated. :)

If you still require assistance, please post a new HijackThis log in reply to this topic.

Hello gryphin,

Let's get a deeper look then we'll start attacking the infection.

P2P Software

IMPORTANT I notice there are signs of one or more P2P (Peer to Peer) File Sharing Programs on your computer.

LimeWire 5.1.2
Vuze

I'd like you to read P2P (Person to Person) File Sharing Programmes where this forum's policy is explained.

If you would like to continue, you must go to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and uninstall the programs listed above (in red).
Warning: Any existing remnants of the program may be removed during cleaning.

Scan with OTL

Click here to download OTL by OldTimer and save it to your Desktop
  • Close all other open windows, then double-click OTL Image to start the tool.
  • Under Output, ensure that Minimal Output is selected
  • Copy the text in the code box below and paste it into the Custom Scans/Fixes box (under the cyan line at the bottom of the window)
    Code: Select all
    netsvcs
    %SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.exe
    /md5start
    eventlog.dll
    scecli.dll
    netlogon.dll
    cngaudit.dll
    sceclt.dll
    ntelogon.dll
    logevent.dll
    iaStor.sys
    nvstor.sys
    atapi.sys
    IdeChnDr.sys
    viasraid.sys
    AGP440.sys
    vaxscsi.sys
    nvatabus.sys
    viamraid.sys
    nvata.sys
    nvgts.sys
    iastorv.sys
    ViPrt.sys
    eNetHook.dll
    ahcix86.sys
    KR10N.sys
    nvstor32.sys
    ahcix86s.sys
    nvrd32.sys
    symmpi.sys
    adp3132.sys
    /md5stop
    %systemroot%\*. /mp /s
    %systemroot%\system32\*.dll /lockedfiles
    %systemroot%\Tasks\*.job /lockedfiles
    %systemroot%\system32\drivers\*.sys /lockedfiles
    %systemroot%\System32\config\*.sav
    CREATERESTOREPOINT
  • Click Run Scan in upper left of window.
  • When the scan is finished, two logs will open:
    OTL.Txt <-- Will be opened
    Extras.Txt <-- Will be minimized
  • Please post the contents of these two logs in your next reply.

Scan with GMER

Click here to download GMER Rootkit Scanner and save it to your desktop.

  • Disconnect your computer from the internet and disable all security software before starting the scan.
    NOTE: To disable McAfee SecurityCenter
    • Locate McAfee Image icon in the system tray and double-click it to open McAfee SecurityCenter
    • Click Advanced Menu or Basic Menu in the lower left of the window.
    • Click Computer & Files, then click Image in the right pane.
    • Under Virus Protection is enabled, select (tick) Off
    • In the popup window, select Never in the drop-down menu, then click OK
    • Select (tick) Off for all other modules installed (Spyware, SystemGuard, etc.)
    • Click Advanced Menu or Basic Menu in the lower left of the window.
    • Click Internet & Network, then click Image in the right pane.
    • Under Firewall Protection is enabled, select (tick) Off
    • In the popup window, select Never in the drop-down menu, then click OK
    • Close McAfee SecurityCenter
  • Double click the randomly named GMER file. If asked to allow GMER to run, please allow it.
  • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan...click on NO

    Image
Click the image to enlarge it
  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following boxes:
    • Sections
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
    • Show All
  • Then click the Scan button and wait for it to finish
  • Once done click on the Save.. button at lower right, and in the File name area, type in "ark.txt" (include the quotes or it will save as a .log file)
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and post it in reply
**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries

Note: Do not run any programs while Gmer is running.

After tools have run and any necessary reboots have occurred, open McAfee SecurityCenter and click the Image button in the upper right of the window to enable protection.

Hello shinybeast.
Bit of trouble here. I uninstalled the p2p programs as you said. I did the first scan as you said.

However, trouble with the second scan, GMER. I disabled McAfee just like you said, I was disconnected from the internet, and I was running no other programs. I also unchecked the option boxes that you told me to. But, when I tried to perform the scan, it starts, then a Windows dialouge box pops up saying "GMER has stopped working, attempting to find source of problem." Then GMER program shuts down; and then the horrible blue screan pops on saying "windows is shutting down due to unexpected problem", and my system reboots.

This happened, I tried again, it happened again, so I stopped everything to update you.

Also, just letting you know, the problem is becoming more severe, my browser is now sometimes being redirected when I am following links on this site. It seems as though any link is vulnerable to being redirected by this malware.

OK, like I said I did do the first scan so here is the two pages of results from that. I'll wait to hear from you as to what to about GMER not working.

Hope you are having a good day, thanks again for ypur help.

Unread postby shinybeast » February 7th, 2010, 8:16 pm

Hi gryphin,

Don't worry about GMER at the moment, we will try something else, if necessary.
Perform the following.

Disable Windows Defender

Windows Defender needs to be disabled to prevent interference with other tools we use.

  • Click Start button, click All Programs, click Image Windows Defender
  • Click Tools at top center of window to open Tools and Settings
  • Under Settings, Click Options
  • Scroll down to Administrator Options
  • Under Administrator options, uncheck Use Windows Defender then click Save
  • If Windows asks for your permission, click Continue
  • Click Close at the warning.

Do not run or enable Windows Defender until we are finished.

Disable McAfee SecurityCenter

After tools have run and any necessary reboots have occurred, open McAfee SecurityCenter and click the Image button in the upper right of the window to enable protection.

OTL

  • Close all other open windows, then double-click OTL.exe to start OTL
  • Copy all of the text in the code box below and paste it in the white area under Custom Scans/Fixes (under the cyan line at the bottom of the window)
    Code: Select all
    :otl
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {C84D72FE-E17D-4195-BB24-76C02E2E7C4E} - No CLSID value found.
    O2 - BHO: (CBrowserHelperObject Object) - {CA6319C0-31B7-401E-A518-A07C3DB8F777} - C:\Program Files\Dell\BAE\BAE.dll (Dell Inc.)
    O4 - HKCU..\Run: [notepad] C:\Users\Nate\ntload.DLL (Microsoft)

    :reg
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\SharedAccess\Parameters\FirewallPolicy\FirewallRules]
    "TCP Query User{17AB2662-135D-4513-9759-64535725F4D4}C:\program files\limewire\limewire.exe" = ""
    "TCP Query User{AD740D58-0FD7-4CA5-A1E6-3DA4F393467B}C:\program files\vuze\azureus.exe" = ""
    "UDP Query User{107DB6FC-7D21-47BF-A4C8-9FB94EA9EAA1}C:\program files\limewire\limewire.exe" = ""
    "UDP Query User{E333D3E8-C7A9-4AE3-9492-41FB163D8749}C:\program files\vuze\azureus.exe" = ""

    :commands
    [emptytemp]
  • Close all running programs except for OTL, including all browser windows.
  • Then click Run Fix at the top of the window.
  • Once done, OTL will require a reboot. Please allow it.
  • After reboot, the log should open. Please save the log and post it in your next reply.

Download and Run Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

Please download the free version of Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and save to a convenient location.
Double-click the mbam-setup.exe file that you download to start the installation
Go through the install screens and before you click finish ensure that these two check boxes are checked.
  • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

The program will then check for updates. If you have a firewall installed and it throws up a warning, please allow Malwarebytes through.
  • Once it checks for and gets any updates tick Perform quick scan
  • Click Scan
  • When it finishes, click OK in the window that pops up and then click Show Results in the main window
  • Ensure that all items are checked and click Remove Selected.
  • When the removal is complete, a logfile will open. Please copy and paste the entire contents of the logfile in your next reply. See NOTE below
  • If necessary, the logfile can also be accessed by running Malwarebytes' and clicking the Log tab. Double-click the current log to open it.
NOTE: If Malwarebytes' encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let it proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent Malwarebytes' from removing all the malware.

Please post the OTL log and MalwareBytes' log in your next reply along with info on how the computer is behaving.

Don't forget to enable McAfee after running the tools!

Hello shinybeast,

Sorry I have not replied to you sooner. I am on the mid-atlantic of the US and we have been socked with a couple nasty snow storms, lost power a good bit.
Well thank you for the new instructions. I have followed them to the letter. My computer is behaving very well and when I use google, I am sent to the correct link. So, the main complaint I had that led me to posting is not happening anymore. I'll leave it to you whether it is fixed or not. Thank you so much for your help, sorry it took me awhile to post. I'll check back for further posts often. Thank you again.

-gryphin

Hello gryphin,

Glad to hear things are better. :)

We still have some work to do to secure the computer and check for leftovers.

Older versions of Java and Adobe Reader have vulnerabilities that can be exploited by malware.
Please follow the steps below to update them.

Uninstall Programs

Click Start button
Type appwiz.cpl and press Enter to open Programs and Features
For each of the programs listed below, right-click them in the list and click Uninstall

Adobe Reader 9
Java(TM) 6 Update 7

Then close Progams and Features

Update Java

Download and install newest version:

  • Click here to visit Sun Java download page
  • Under Java Platform, Standard Edition, click then orange Download JRE button
  • Select your platform and agree to the license agreement (after having read it, of course) by clicking the checkbox. Click Continue.
  • Click the link (jre-6u18-windows-i586-p.exe) under Available Files and download the offline installer to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running, including web browsers.
  • From your desktop, double-click on the download to install the newest version.
  • Uncheck Install the Yahoo! Toolbar during installation!

Adobe Reader

Download and install newest version:

  • Click Here to download the installer for Adobe Reader and save AdbeRdr930_en_US.exe to a convenient location.
  • Double-click AdbeRdr930_en_US.exe and follow the prompts to install Adobe Reader 9.3

Reboot the computer.

OTL Quick Scan

  • Close all other open windows, then double-click OTL.exe to start OTL
  • Copy the text in the code box below and paste it into the Custom Scans/Fixes box (under the cyan line at the bottom of the window)
    Code: Select all
    safebootminimal
    safebootnetwork
  • Click Quick Scan to start the scan
  • Once it is finished, a log will open (OTL.txt)
  • Please copy and paste the contents of OTL.txt in your next reply.

Include info on any remaining symptoms and the OTL log in your next reply.
