Re: Back for help, computer too slow

Unread postby Wingman » February 4th, 2010, 4:22 pm

Hi Hugo,
Sorry you had problems with the Java install. Good job persevering and getting it accomplished. :)
The last set of logs look very good, no apparent malware in any of them.

One of the reasons you may be experiencing these "slowness"and other intermittent problems is because you are very limited on the amount of RAM installed. Even though Microsoft's Windows Vista recommended system requirements indicate Vista (Home Basic) will run on as little as 512mb, it is advisable to have at least 2 gb to run Vista, without having tremendous lag time. RAM has gotten cheaper and you could use the Crucial Memory Advisor™ tool to scan your system and determine what kind and how much memory you could purchase and install. Adding additional memory is one of the most cost effective ways to increase your computer's performance.

There are some programs that are starting when you first start your computer. Most of these are more for convenience and can be started manually via the All Programs Menus or through Control Panel applets. By removing them from your startups, you will save resources and possibly improve the overall performance of the machine.
Once we have done this we'll run a couple final scans to make sure no malware is hiding anywhere.

Please do not make any changes to your system: do not add or remove any software, run any scans or "fix" programs and/or remove any files unless instructed to do so, by me. Please read these instructions carefully before executing and then perform the steps, in the order given. lf, you have any questions or problems, executing these instructions, <<STOP>> do not proceed, post back with the question or problem.

Step 1.
ERUNT - Emergency Recovery Utility NT
Please run this again, as we are going to make changes to the registry. Better to be safe than to be sorry.
Modifying the Registry can create unforeseen problems, so it's always wise to create a backup before doing so.
Run:
  1. Please navigate to Start >> All Programs >> ERUNT... right-click on ERUNT from the menu, select "Run As Administrator", to run the process.
  2. Click on OK within the pop-up menu.
  3. In the next menu under C:\WINDOWS\ERDNT\DD-MM-YYYY under Backup options make sure both the following are selected:
    • System registry.
    • Current user registry.
  4. Next click on "OK"... at the prompt... reply "Yes".
After a short duration the Registry backup is complete! pop-up message will appear.
  5. Now click on "OK". A registry backup has now been created.
< STOP > If you did not successfully complete this step. < STOP > Do not continue with any other steps, post back and let me know!

Step 2.
OTM
  1. Please download OTM.exe...by Old Timer. Save it to your desktop.
  2. Right click on OTM.exe and select Run As Administrator to run it. If Windows UAC prompts, please allow it.
  3. Please copy and paste the text in the Code box below, into OTM (1).
Please refer to the OTM screen image below, for reference.
Warning: Do not type it out... errors could damage your machine.
    Code: Select all

Please refer to this image to use OTM.

    Image
  4. Click on MoveIt! (2)
  5. The end results of the processing will be in 2 places:
    • The Results window on the right side of the OTM screen.
    • A log (text) file created in "C:\_OTM\MovedFiles\mmddyyyy_hhmmss.log"
  6. Copy all the text from the Results window... Open Notepad, paste the OTM results into the Notepad file, save it on your desktop.
  7. Click Exit (3) when done.
  8. Please paste the entire content from the OTM (Results) window (Notepad file) or the OTM log file, in your next reply.
NOTE: If your computer did not automatically reboot... please reboot it (normally) now!
Caution: Be careful of what you copy and paste with this tool. OTM is a powerful program, designed to move highly persistent files and folders and is intended by the developer to be used under the guidance and supervision of a trained malware removal expert.

Step 3.
Re-run - RSIT (Random's System Information Tool)
You should still have this program on your desktop.
  1. Right click on RSIT.exe and select "Run As Administrator" to run it. If Windows UAC prompts you, please allow it.
  2. Please read the disclaimer... click on Continue.
RSIT will start running. When done... ONLY the "C:\RSIT\log.txt"...will be reproduced.<<will be maximized
  3. Please post ONLY the "log.txt", file contents in your next reply.

Step 4.
Please include in your next reply:
  1. Any problem executing the instructions?
  2. OTM results
  3. RSIT new log.txt file contents.
  4. How is the computer behaving?
Thanks,
Wingman

Hi Wingman:
Ok here is the recap, run ERUNT no problem, then run OTM and it froze, I had to close the program and it would not run again, I reboot the pc and did it again and this time work just fine, run RSIT with out any problems the pc seems to be working fine but something that I have not mention is that I've been having many problems doing the automatic updates from windows, so I turn off those automatic updates, should I turn it on and see what happen?, and here are the copies of the logs thanks a lot

Re: Back for help, computer too slow

Unread postby Wingman » February 5th, 2010, 9:25 am

Hi Hugo,
Good job! :) Glad to hear the computer is working fine. Now let's see if we can get Windows Update working.

Vista - Windows 7 Users - Please Note:
The programs I ask you to run need to be installed and run in Administrator Mode by... Right clicking the installation file and the executable program file & selecting: Run as Administrator. Additionally, the built-in User Account Control (UAC) utility, if enabled, may prompt you for permission to run the program. When prompted, please select: Allow. Reference: User Account Control (UAC) and Running as Administrator

Step 2.
Windows Update problem fix
You must use Internet Explorer to perform Windows-Microsoft Updates.
Create batch file to register ...dll's
  1. Open Notepad... Copy and paste the following command lines into the Notepad window.
    Code: Select all
    @echo off
    regsvr32 /s wuapi.dll
    regsvr32 /s wuaueng.dll
    regsvr32 /s wuaueng1.dll
    regsvr32 /s wucltui.dll
    regsvr32 /s wups.dll
    regsvr32 /s wups2.dll
    regsvr32 /s wuweb.dll
    del %0
  2. Save the Notepad file on your desktop...as WUFix.bat... Save as type: = "All Files" (otherwise the file won't work.)
    Image
WUFix.bat <<------------- you should see this on your desktop.
  3. Double click on WUFix.bat to execute it.
Vista / W7 users: Right click on WUFix.bat, select "Run As Administrator" to execute it.
A black CMD window will flash, then disappear...this is normal.

Turn Automatic Updates back on... see if there is any notification of updates... if yes, see if they will download and install. If nothing happens... try going to the Update site as follows.
  4. Using Internet Explorer, try Windows-Microsoft Update again.
Vista / W7 users: Close IE, then restart IE by Right-clicking the Internet Explorer (Start Menu or Quick Launch Bar) icon... select "Run As Administrator", then try Windows-Microsoft Update again.

Step 3.
Please include in your next reply:
  1. Any problem executing the instructions?
  2. Window Updates.. Automatic Notification working? Updates themselves downloading and installing?
  3. How is the computer behaving?
Thanks,
Wingman

Hi Wingman:
I had no problem following instructions, so windows update is working now, but one of them didn't update, and as much as I try and I try it fails to update, here is the information about that update Security Update for Microsoft Works 8 (KB977304)

Installation date: ‎2/‎6/‎2010 9:17 AM

Installation status: Failed

Error details: Code 646

Update type: Important

A security vulnerability exists in Microsoft Works 8 that could allow arbitrary code to run when a maliciously modified file is opened. This update resolves that vulnerability.

More information:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/securi ... 9-075.mspx

Help and Support:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/977304
everything else is working just fine, I do really appreciate your help.

Hi Hugo,
Glad things are working "just fine". That's what I like to hear. :)

There seem to be a lot of people experiencing the same thing, with this update.
Try going to MS Download and try to download and install the update manually.
Security Update for Microsoft Works 8 (KB977304)

Hi Hugo,
You could try this Patch Registration Cleanup Tool, from Microsoft. It may help resolve the update problem.
Adding more memory is an excellent idea, once you do, I'm sure you see an improvement.

Your computer now appears to be malware free! :)
We need to perform some cleanup steps, for some of the tools we used. Then I'll provide some recommendations to help keep your computer more secure.

Step 1.
OTC
Let's perform some housekeeping and cleanup some of the tools we used.
Please download OTC.exe... by OldTimer. Save it to your desktop.
