You were right - dumbbo here had set the Recycle Bin to "always permanently delete". Thanks.

Don’t feel bad that was new to me too, I googled the answer, but learnt something along the way :thumbright:

My Browser was being high-jacked - a new window would open to some weird, often unsavory Site - e.g., gambling - on about one search in 4. I don't know if that is related to the Rootkit issue or not.

Yep it was

Combofix did flag a problem in the last run - "couldn't open a file". Pls let me know if I need to re-run.

All seems ok from what was posted.

Apart from that, all seems well

Excellent!

You should Download and Install the newest version of Adobe Reader for reading pdf files, due to the vulnerabilities in earlier versions.
All versions numbered lower than 9.2 are vulnerable.
  • Go HERE and click on AdbeRdr920_en_US.exe to download the latest version of Adobe Acrobat Reader.
  • Save this file to your desktop and run it to install the latest version of Adobe Reader.

You appear to have updated Java since the first uninstall list,

RP442: 1/28/2010 10:38:07 AM - Installed Java(TM) 6 Update 18

That’s fine just make sure you uninstall the older versions that you have on board via add/remove programs.

I would like you to do an online scan to make sure we have missed nothing, be warned it will take ages.

ESET Online Scanner

Note: You can use either Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox for this scan. You will however need to disable your current installed Anti-Virus, how to do so can be read here.

Vista users: You will need to to right-click on the either the IE or FF icon in the Start Menu or Quick Launch Bar on the Taskbar and select Run as Administrator from the context menu.

  • Please go here then click on: Image
Note: If using Mozilla Firefox you will need to download esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe when prompted then double click on it to install.
All of the below instructions are compatible with either Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox.
  • Select the option YES, I accept the Terms of Use then click on: Image
  • When prompted allow the Add-On/Active X to install.
  • Make sure that the option Remove found threats is NOT checked, and the option Scan archives is checked.
  • Now click on Advanced Settings and select the following:
    • Scan for potentially unwanted applications
    • Scan for potentially unsafe applications
    • Enable Anti-Stealth Technology
  • Now click on: Image
  • The virus signature database... will begin to download. Be patient this make take some time depending on the speed of your Internet Connection.
  • When completed the Online Scan will begin automatically.
  • Do not touch either the Mouse or keyboard during the scan otherwise it may stall.
  • When completed select Uninstall application on close if you so wish, make sure you copy the logfile first!
  • Now click on: Image
  • Use notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\ESET\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt.
  • Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic.
Note: Do not forget to re-enable your Anti-Virus application after running the above scan!

Please reply with:-
  • ESET log
  • New HJT log

ESET found 2 infections - are they real?

Yes and no!

The first item was nabbed by Combofix and is sitting in quarantine. This will be removed when we uninstall CF.
The second item is sitting in your System Restore, so as long as you don’t do a restore before we are done it is harmless. When we uninstall CF it will reset System restore so will in effect be removed then.

Another tool that I would like you to have onboard is ATF Cleaner, it is a very handy, quick and efficient for cleaning out temp files etc. It can be used whenever you feel the need.

Download and Run ATF Cleaner
Download ATF (Atribune Temp File) Cleaner© by Atribune to your desktop.
Make sure that all browser windows are closed.

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    Under Main choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser,To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Other than that I think we are done, all looks great. So if you are not having any further problems, I would suggest you proceed as follows.

You can delete RSIT from your Desktop and its associated folder C:\RSIT, the same with GMER.

Uninstall ComboFix:

  • Click on Start >> Run...
  • Now type in ComboFix /Uninstall into the and click OK.
  • Note the space between the X and the /Uninstall, it needs to be there.
  • Image

The above procedure will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset System Restore points

Here are some free programs I recommend that could help you improve your computer's security.

Update your Antivirus programs and other security products regularly to avoid new threats that could infect your system. If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

You can use one of these sites to check if any updates are needed for your pc.
Secunia Software Inspector
F-secure Health Check

Install WinPatrol
Download it from here
Here you can find information about how WinPatrol works here

Read some information here how to prevent Malware.

Hi Muppy03,
I've cleaned the system up, including all the updates recommended by Secunia. Minor slip - didn't follow your exact sequence - re-start point may be "off".

I think we are OK now - few minor issues, such as a copy of Open Office (the scans found it, but I can't!), and several old versions of Java with no enrty in the "Add/Remove" list.

I think it probably needs a good clean up of the Registry & Defrag now. Do you have any suggestions for Registry clean-up? With the dozens of requests for assistance on this site, I'll understand no response.

This has taken an awful lot of work, but you have been great throughout. I really appreciated that,

kind regards,
Peter

Not sure what you mean here.

and several old versions of Java with no enrty in the "Add/Remove" list.

You can use Javara to clean up all older versions etc.

JavaRa

Please download JavaRa and unzip it to your desktop.

***Please close any instances of Internet Explorer before continuing!***

  • Double-click on JavaRa.exe to start the program.
  • From the drop-down menu, choose English and click on Select.
  • JavaRa will open; click on Remove Older Versions to remove the older versions of Java installed on your computer.
  • Click Yes when prompted. When JavaRa is done, a notice will appear that a logfile has been produced. Click OK.
  • A logfile will pop up. Please save it to a convenient location, and copy/paste it back in this topic.
  • In case the logfile doesn't pop up, you can find it here: C:\JavaRa.log

I think it probably needs a good clean up of the Registry & Defrag now. Do you have any suggestions for Registry clean-up?

Defrag away but read the below quote that puts into words what I and other malware cleaners think of reg cleaners.

Most reg cleaners aren't "bad" as such, but they aren't perfect and even the best have been known to cause problems.
The point we are trying to make is that the risk of using one far outweighs any benefit.
If it does work perfectly you will not see any difference
If it doesn't work properly you may end up with an expensive doorstop.

With the dozens of requests for assistance on this site, I'll understand no response.
I will always respond, might not always know the answer :? but will always respond.

This has taken an awful lot of work, but you have been great throughout. I really appreciated that,

Not a problem at all, and I learned something new too (the recycle bin). :D

Hi Muppy03

Thanks again.

Downloaded JavaRa, closed Firefox, and ran it. It ran, but then crashed, but it looks like it's done its job.
There is now only one Java entry in PROGRAM FILES, and only one in "ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS"

Microsoft took an error report.
I tried to get a copy of the error report - too well hidden, but the following file was attached to the errror report:

I couldnt find a JavaRa log file - Windows Explorer showed whaty it called a DEF file - attached.
YOUR WEB SITE WOULD NOT ACCEPT A FILE WITH THE .def EXTENSION.
PLS LET ME KNOW IF YOU NEED IT - I CAN RENAME IT.
