Firefox crashes, browser redirects and other problems

Unread postby metalhead15 » January 29th, 2010, 4:29 pm

I started noticing this when I tried to install google chrome. The installer stops working immediately as in it doesn't even load. I tried restarting my comp and when it started back up I was hit with a bunch of messages about things not working. They are as follows.

-System settings protector has stopped working
-Windows Defender user interface has stopped working
-msascui.exe failed to initialize properly

After that I noticed that many times when I click a search link from google (both in ie and firefox) I am redirected to another random crappy looking search site. The exact site changes but they tend to look the same. *update* this time the redirect was to a site that told me I had all kinds of viruses and basically stole control of the browser not letting me close it or switch to another tab. I had to end the firefox process.
Sometimes also audio ads will pop on and I cannot find them and must close all my tabs.

Firefox crashes somewhere around every 15 minutes also. It is super annoying. I can figure out any specific reasons that cause it to stop responding.

Nod32 notices some malware looking stuff but when it tries to clean or delete them it says something along the lines of an error occurred while cleaning/deleting. I am pulling out my freaking hair this is pissing me off so bad. Thanks in advance to anyone who feels like helping me.

Here is my hijack this log

Unread postby shinybeast » February 2nd, 2010, 2:27 pm

Hello and welcome to Malware Removal Forums

My handle is shinybeast and I will be assisting you in the removal of malware your computer may have.

Please follow these guidelines as we work to clean your computer.
  • Read through the instructions before you perform them and if you have questions please ask before you perform them. Please do not guess. I will be happy to clarify or explain.
  • Perform all instructions in the order given.
  • Stick with the process until I give you an "all clean." If the symptoms are gone, it does not necessarily mean your computer is safe and secure.
  • The instructions assume you are using an account with administrator privileges.
  • Do not run any other tools to remove malware while we are working.
  • Post all responses in a reply to this topic - Please do not start a new topic.
  • If your security software throws up warnings about some of these tools, please allow these tools to run, they are safe.
  • If you have not done so, please take time to read the Malware Removal Forum Guidelines and Rules and How to get help at this forum where the conditions for receiving help at this forum are explained.
NOTE: I am in training here at Malware Removal University.
I must get my replies to you approved by a malware expert which means it could take slightly longer to get back to you.
Your patience is appreciated. :)

Installed Program List

It would be helpful to see a list of programs installed on your computer.

  • Please start Hijackthis
  • Click the Open the Misc Tools section button
  • Click the Open Uninstall Manager... under System Tools

You will see a list of programs installed on your computer.
Please click the Save List... button and specify where you would like to save the list.
Once you click Save, the list will open in Notepad. Simply copy and paste the entire contents of Notepad in your next post.

If you still need assistance, please include the uninstall list and a new HijackThis log in your next reply.

Unread postby shinybeast » February 5th, 2010, 11:45 am

Hello metalhead15,

Apologies for the delay.

P2P Software

IMPORTANT I notice there are signs of one or more P2P (Peer to Peer) File Sharing Programs on your computer.

Azureus Vuze
SoulSeek Client 156c

I'd like you to read P2P (Person to Person) File Sharing Programmes where this forum's policy is explained.

If you would like to continue, you must go to Control Panel > Programs and Features and uninstall the programs listed above (in red).
Warning: Any existing remnants of the program may be removed during cleaning.

Scan with CKScanner

Click here to download CKScanner and save it to your Desktop. <- Important
  • Right-click CKScanner.exe and click Image Run as Administrator in the context menu.
  • Click Search For Files.
  • After a very short time, when the cursor hourglass disappears, click Save List To File.
  • A message box will verify the file saved.
  • Double-click the CKFiles.txt icon on your desktop. Copy the contents and paste them in your next reply.

Please post the CKScanner log in your next reply.

I feel like your blanket policy against any and all p2p programs is completely unwarranted. Soulseek is a music program which I use to promote my band and stay involved in my local music scene. I am a member of a private tracker and am very careful in what I download. In all likely hood I got whatever is ailing me by clicking on something in my neverending search for more pron. That said I will delete those programs if thats what it takes to get you to help me. I do however strongly encourage you (maybe not you since you are a trainee) to reconsider your policy, as I believe it is relatively new. I posted something for the same problem a couple weeks ago and could not follow up on it due to internet loss at my house (topic was subsequently closed) and there was no mention of this policy then. I feel that it is rather draconian in nature and quite a bit of overkill. I realize there are a lot of idiots that don't think twice about what they download, but I would imagine most of the people who come here are a little smarter than that, they are after all attempting to address and fix problems themselves, not something that joe computer idiot would probably do. Anyways I did what you asked here is the log. There is nothing on it.

CKScanner - Additional Security Risks - These are not necessarily bad

Hi metalhead15,

P2P use and cracked program use are where the vast majority of infections come from.
P2P use is mentioned in this topic: ALL USERS OF THIS FORUM MUST READ THIS FIRST. It is a long standing policy.

There it also mentions Use of "cracked" programmes.

This forum does not support the use of stolen software, nor will it "aid and abet" in its use. If your helper detects the presence of cracked software on your computer, you will be asked to remove it at once.

Failure to do so will result in the closure of your topic.

You have a cracked version of ESET NOD32 AntiVirus.

In order to continue, you must do the following.

Uninstall Programs

Click Start button
Type appwiz.cpl and press Enter to open Programs and Features
For each of the programs listed below, right-click them in the list and click Uninstall

ESET NOD32 Antivirus
NOD32 v3.0.642 FiX1.2 by TemDono (31 days remaining forever up

Then install a legitimate Anti-Virus. I suggest one of these free ones.
Note: Running more than one antivirus can make your computer unstable and provides no additional benefit.

Avast! Home Edition
Avira AntiVir
Microsoft Security Essentials

After that, perform the following:

Scan with OTL

Click here to download OTL by OldTimer and save it to your Desktop
  • Close all other open windows, then double-click OTL Image to start the tool.
  • Under Output, ensure that Minimal Output is selected
  • Copy the text in the code box below and paste it into the Custom Scans/Fixes box (under the cyan line at the bottom of the window)
    Code: Select all
    netsvcs
    %SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.exe
    /md5start
    eventlog.dll
    scecli.dll
    netlogon.dll
    cngaudit.dll
    sceclt.dll
    ntelogon.dll
    logevent.dll
    iaStor.sys
    nvstor.sys
    atapi.sys
    IdeChnDr.sys
    viasraid.sys
    AGP440.sys
    vaxscsi.sys
    nvatabus.sys
    viamraid.sys
    nvata.sys
    nvgts.sys
    iastorv.sys
    ViPrt.sys
    eNetHook.dll
    ahcix86.sys
    KR10N.sys
    nvstor32.sys
    ahcix86s.sys
    nvrd32.sys
    symmpi.sys
    adp3132.sys
    /md5stop
    %systemroot%\*. /mp /s
    %systemroot%\system32\*.dll /lockedfiles
    %systemroot%\Tasks\*.job /lockedfiles
    %systemroot%\system32\drivers\*.sys /lockedfiles
    %systemroot%\System32\config\*.sav
  • Click Run Scan in upper left of window.
  • When the scan is finished, two logs will open:
    OTL.Txt <-- Will be opened
    Extras.Txt <-- Will be minimized
  • Please post the contents of these two logs in your next reply.

Scan with GMER

Click here to download GMER Rootkit Scanner and save it to your desktop.

  • Disconnect your computer from the internet and disable all security software before starting the scan.
A guide to do this can be found here. If you still aren't sure how to disable protection software, please ask.
  • Double click the randomly named GMER file. If asked to allow gmer to run, please allow it.
  • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan...click on NO

    Image
Click the image to enlarge it
  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following boxes:
    • Sections
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
    • Show All
  • Then click the Scan button and wait for it to finish
  • Once done click on the Save.. button at lower right, and in the File name area, type in "ark.txt" (include the quotes or it will save as a .log file)
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and post it in reply
**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries

Note: Do not run any programs while Gmer is running.

Please include the OTL logs and the GMER log in your next reply.

Hello metalhead15,

The link works for me. Try it again and if it doesn't work then try the following.

Scan with RSIT

  • Please download Random's System Information Tool by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Right-click RSIT.exe and click Image Run as Administrator to run the tool
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it finishes, two logs will open...
    • log.txt will be opened maximized
    • info.txt will be opened minimized
  • Please post the contents of both logs in your next post.

**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries

Note: Do not run any programs while Gmer is running.

Please include the OTL or RSIT logs and the GMER log in your next reply.

Re: Firefox crashes, browser redirects and other problems

Unread postby shinybeast » February 10th, 2010, 4:43 pm

Hi metalhead15,

Thanks for uninstalling ESET.

Ad-Aware, while a decent program is not effective against current threats. Please uninstall it to avoid it conflicting with the tools we use.

Uninstall Programs

Click Start button
Type appwiz.cpl and press Enter to open Programs and Features
For each of the programs listed below, right-click them in the list and click Uninstall

Ad-Aware
Spybot - Search & Destroy 1.5.2.20

Disable Spybot Tea Timer

Tea Timer needs to be disabled to prevent interference with other tools we use.

  • Start Spybot Search & Destroy (Start > All Programs > Spybot - Search & Destroy > Spybot - Search & Destroy)
  • Select Advanced Mode (Click Mode in menu bar and select Advanced mode)
  • On the left side of the window click Tools
  • Under Tools click Resident (red & white shield)
  • Uncheck Resident "TeaTimer" and click OK at any prompts.
  • Restart the computer

NOTE: Leave TeaTimer disabled until we are done. I will remind you to enable it later.

Please post a new HijackThis log so that I may verify Tea Timer is disabled and we can go ahead and kill the infection. Tea Timer can prevent good (as well as bad) changes to be made to the computer and it must be disabled.

Hello metalhead15,

It has been 2 days since my last post to you.
  • Do you still need help with this problem?
  • Do you need more time?
  • Are you having problems understanding or performing the instructions?
Please let me know how things are going otherwise...
After 24 hrs., if you have not replied to this thread... it will be closed!

It's probably worth noting that I wasn't even able to open sb s&d. It becomes unresponsive and auto closes the second you click on it, so I uninstalled it alltogether.

Hello metalhead15,

Let's kill some malware.

TDSSKiller

Download and Run Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

Please download the free version of Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and save to a convenient location.
Double-click the mbam-setup.exe file that you download to start the installation
Go through the install screens and before you click finish ensure that the two check boxes below are checked.
  • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

The program will then check for updates. If you have a firewall installed and it throws up a warning, please allow Malwarebytes through.
  • Once it checks for and gets any updates tick Perform full scan
  • If you are asked to select drives to be scanned, leave all the drives selected and click Scan
  • The scan could take quite some time to complete, please be patient.
  • When it finishes, click OK in the window that pops up and then click Show Results in the main window
  • Check all items EXCEPT items in the C:\System Volume Information folder... then click on Remove Selected.
  • When the removal is complete, a logfile will open. Please copy and paste the entire contents of the logfile in your next reply. See NOTE below
  • If necessary, the logfile can also be accessed by running Malwarebytes' and clicking the Log tab. Double-click the current log to open it.
NOTE: If Malwarebytes' encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let it proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent Malwarebytes' from removing all the malware.

No Anti-Virus

You did not replace ESET. It is imperative you install an Anti-Virus as running without one is inviting trouble.
Please choose one of the below and install it now. You can uninstall it later if you choose to purchase another Anti-Virus.

Avast! Home Edition
Avira AntiVir
Microsoft Security Essentials

Re: Firefox crashes, browser redirects and other problems

Unread postby shinybeast » February 14th, 2010, 7:38 pm

This is a volunteer service.
Any time you have the privilege of using it FREE, we have certain expectations.
One of those is for you to be forthright in your replies and provide your best effort to execute the helpers instructions exactly.

In this case there seems to be a problem doing so, and since this is a volunteer FREE service, we are choosing not to help you further.
There will be no additional explanation, no additional replies, and this thread will be closed.
