Hi. :)

First of all may I thank you for a comprehensive and clear set of instructions.
You're welcome and thank you!

I have experienced no problems for a while now other than the "blue screen of death" when running some of the tools as mentioned in earlier posts, but I have been keeping usage to a minimum in case of further infection.
OK, thanks for the update.

Next

Out of date Adobe and Java installations pose a security risk. They can be used by malware as a means to infect a computer and or re-infect. We will update both in due course.

Now please go to Start >> Control Panel >> Add/Remove Programs and remove the following (if present):

Ad-Aware 2007 <-- This is active in system memory and not particularly effective at all.
Adobe Reader 8.1.5
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 11
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03
Java(TM) 6 Update 2
Java(TM) 6 Update 3
Java(TM) 6 Update 5
Java(TM) 6 Update 7

To do so, click once on each of the above in turn to highlight and then click on the Remove button.

Note: Take extra care in answering questions posed by any Uninstaller. Some questions may be worded to deceive you into keeping the program.

Reset Host File:

  • Open Notepad.
  • Copy and Paste everything from the Code Box below into Notepad: <-- Start >> Run... type in notepad and select OK
Code: Select all
@Echo off
pushd\windows\system32\drivers\etc
attrib -h -s -r hosts
echo 127.0.0.1 localhost>HOSTS
attrib +r +h +s hosts
popd
del %0
  • Go to File >> Save As
  • Save File name as "Dakeyras.bat" <-- Make sure to include the quotes.
  • Change Save as Type to All Files and save the file to your Desktop.
  • It should look like this: Image

Now double click on the desktop Dakeyras.bat to run the batch file. It will self-delete when completed.

Reset SP3 Firewall:

Click on Start >> Run... and cut/paste in the following and click on OK
Code: Select all
firewall.cpl
Click on the Advanced tab >> Restore Defaults >> At the prompt click on Yes >> OK

Now click on the General tab >> select Off(not recommended) >> OK.

Note: No need for it to be active after the reset because you have the McAfee Personal Firewall installed.

New Adobe Reader Installation:

  • Go here and click on AdbeRdr920_en_US.exe to download the latest version of Adobe Reader.
  • Save this file to your desktop and run it to install the latest version of Adobe Reader.

New Java Installation:

  • Click here to visit Java's website.
  • Scroll down to Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 18. Click on Download.
  • Select Windows from the drop-down list for Platform.
  • Select Multi-language from the drop-down list for Language.
  • Check (tick) I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 License Agreement box and click on Continue.
  • Click on jre-6u18-windows-i586.exe link to download it and save this to a convenient location.
  • Double click on jre-6u18-windows-i586.exe to install Java.

Check Hard Disk For Errors:

Press Start >> Run ..., then copy/paste the following command into the box and press OK:
cmd /c chkdsk c: |find /v "percent" >> "%userprofile%\desktop\checkhd.txt"
A blank command window will open on your desktop, then close in a few minutes. This is normal.
A file icon named checkhd.txt should appear on your Desktop. Please post the contents of this file.

When completed the above, please post back the following:

  • How is your computer performing now? Any problems encountered and or any further symptoms?
  • checkhd.txt

Again, thank you for a comprehensive and clear set of instructions.

Everything seems to be running fine, one thing however, when Running the Dakeyras exe file, I was told that ATTRIB.EXE is damaged and I should run the chkdsk utility. I did not and have not yet, run chkdsk but continued with your instructions which otherwise completed without incident. I include below checkhd.txt as requested:

Unread postby Dakeyras » January 24th, 2010, 8:19 am

Hi. :)

Please delete the current version of Combofix on your desktop, we will be downloading a new copy in due course.

Backup the Registry:

Modifying the Registry can create unforeseen problems, so it always wise to create a backup before doing so.

  • Please go here and download ERUNT.
  • ERUNT (Emergency Recovery Utility NT) is a free program that allows you to keep a complete backup of your registry and restore it when needed.
  • Double click on erunt-setup.exe to Install ERUNT by following the prompts.
  • Use the default install settings but say no to the portion that asks you to add ERUNT to the Start-Up folder. You can enable this option later if you wish.
  • Start ERUNT either by double clicking on the desktop icon or choosing to start the program at the end of the setup process.
  • Choose a location for the backup. Note: the default location is C:\WINDOWS\ERDNT which is acceptable.
  • Make sure that at least the first two check boxes are selected.
  • Click on OK
  • Then click on YES to create the folder.

Note: if it is necessary to restore the registry, open the backup folder and start ERDNT.exe

Download/Run ComboFix:

Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

* Ensure you have disabled all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
  • Please open McAfee Security Centre
  • Under Common Tasks click on Home
  • Click Computer Files
  • Click Configure
  • Make sure the following are disabled by ticking the "Off" button.
Virus protection
Spyware protection
System Guards Protection
Script Scanning Protection (you may have to scroll down to see it)
  • Next, select never for "When to re-enable real time scanning"
  • and click OK.
For further info on disabling and re-enabling McAfee, click here.
Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply for further review.

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix on your own.
This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use. ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

Note: Do not forget to re-enable McAfee after running ComboFix.

When completed the above, please post back the following in the order asked for:

  • How is you computer performing now, any other symptoms and or problems encountered?
  • ComboFix Log.

Unread postby RnD123 » January 25th, 2010, 10:11 am

WHAT HAS HAPPENED! Everything seemed to be working ok, I ran ERUNT with no issues and then ComboFix - again this went through the various stages as normal and then, as on previous occasions, produced a blue screen dump with BAD_POOL_HEADER and *** STOP: 0x00000019 (0x00000020, 0x850a1168, 0x850a1580, 0x1a830002). Again as on previous occasions, I booted into Safe Mode and re-ran ComboFix. I left this running overnight and this morning had to clear hundreds (if not thousands!) of ATTRIB.EXE damaged pop-ups (this too has happened each time i have previously run ComboFix). The PC rebooted, ComboFix created it's log (I have tried for the past 3 hours to cut and paste/attach it into this or multiple posts but it is just too big – 4.4mb, 4500000 characters) and it appears as if most everything has been wiped from the C: drive, certainly my desktop has been cleared and there is nothing in my Start box . Please tell me this is not so!

Also - to prevent further issues with ATTRIB.exe, can this file be replaced?

Thanks in advance,
Richard

Hi. :)

Download this file and save it to the Desktop.

Double-click on CFDQ-UsrPrf.exe and let it run.

Note: Do not let your computer Reboot and only run the file once only.

Next:

Please make sure that RSIT.exe is still on the Desktop.(if not inform myself straight away please)

Click on Start >> Run...(or the Windows key and R together) to bring up the Run box and and copy and paste in:
"%userprofile%\desktop\rsit.exe" /info
and click on OK

  • Click on Run and RSIT will start.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open:
    • log.txt will be opened maximized.
    • info.txt will be opened minimized.
  • Please post the contents of both log.txt and info.txt.

When completed the above, please post back the following in the order asked for:

  • How is you computer performing now, any other symptoms and or problems encountered?
  • A new set of RSIT logs. <-- Post them individually please, IE: one Log per post/reply.

Hi. :)

Thankyou for the speedy reply and sorry for my minor hysterics! All desktop and start items are now restored! PC seems to be performing ok, only noticeable problem is the errors regarding ATTRIB.exe.
You're welcome and not a problem. Perfectly understandable when something unforeseen occurs.

Have you got the documentation and or a re-installation CD-ROM for your McAfee application? As it would be best to temporally uninstall this as we do need to carry out another ComboFix run with a new updated version of ComboFix.

I can uninstall it as it can easily be re-downloaded from McAfee's website. With another run of ComboFix imminent, should I address the ATTRIB.exe issue, or keep running this app in Safe Mode.

On the subject, if you're able to give advise it would be greatly appreciated - McAfee seems to have served me well over the past couple of years but I'm a bit concerned my PC got so heavily infected without detection. With subscription renewal due soon, I have read it is not the most effective method of protection and have heard of alternatives, both free and at a cost, which may? be better - namely AVAST and KAPERSKY - have you an opinion on either or another alternative?

If this is outwith the help I am receiving, please accept my apologies.

OK fair enough re McAfee, as for the latter do not make any changes to your system at all please and merely follow my instructions.

RE: ComboFix running a new updated version without McAfee installed(as this is a problematic application to fully disable at times) there should be no need enter Safe Mode. If in the event your system does crash, merely inform myself straight away and take no further action, thank you.

I am only intending for one ComboFix run and if anything else requires addressing afterwards we will use a different methodology.

Actually the use of P2P applications is probably a cause for the initial infections, though if you wish to change to another Anti-Virus application once the McAfee subscription expires. I will gladly provide some alternatives that are both free and paid for.

Next:

Please run RKill.

Then delete your current copy of ComboFix.

Download Combofix from any of the links below but rename it to batman before saving it to your desktop.

Link 1
Link 2

Note: Do not run Combofix(batman) just yet.

Next:

Now download a copy of the McAfee SecurityCenter installer from here.

McaFee Cleanup:

  • Please download the McAfee Removal Tool.
  • Double click on MCPR.exe to launch it, then click Run.
  • A window should appear and disappear, this is normal.
  • A new window should popup and begin the uninstall. When prompted to reboot your computer type Y.

Next:

Please run RKill.

Run ComboFix(batman):

Double click on the renamed ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt so we can continue cleaning the system.

CAUTION: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

If it does, open Task Manager then Processes tab (press ctrl, alt and del at the same time) and end any processes of findstr, find, sed or swreg, then combofix should continue.
If that happened we want to know, and also what process you had to end.

Next:

Now install McAfee SecurityCenter >> Update >> Carry Out a Complete Scan. Have it fix anything it finds.

When completed the above, please post back the following in the order asked for:

  • How is your computer performing now, any other symptoms and or problems encountered?
  • ComboFix Log.
  • A new HijackThis Log.

I followed your instructions and again ComboFix (Batman.exe) resulted in a Blue Screen Dump. On this occasion I have progressed no further as, on reboot, a window "_desktop_.ini.zip" opens containing one file - deskrop-ini. This reads:

[.ShellClassInfo]
LocalizedResourceName=@%SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll,-21787

What steps should I follow next?

Hi. :)

You took the correct course of action informing myself. I will add at this point be prepared I may have to advise a reformat and reinstallation of the Windows operating system. As my colleague did originally here in this topic.

OK because as at this time you have no active Anti-Virus installed please limit your online activities, thank you.

Scan with Chaser:

  • Please download chaser© by bobby from here and save to your desktop
  • Double click on chaser.exe to start it.
  • Click on the Scan button and wait for it to finish.
  • Then, right click on any location in the white box where the results are shown and select Select All.
  • Repeat the right click and choose Copy.
  • Open Notepad, paste the contents and save the log in a convenient location.
  • Post the contents of that log in your reply and close the program.
