Ok, where do I start?????

Yesterday on my laptop in my start up box a very official red circle appeared with a white cross in it, so like an idiot I unsuspectingly clicked on it and my troubles began.

Everything about the pc looks ok ie desktop etc, however, mt internet explorer page has been turned into a blue screen of death. It had the web address c:\secure32.html and it stated that the pc had been infected with spyware and went on to quote my IP address etc etc. I was unable to change it back to my home page of google or indeed navigate to any other web page. it gave 3 links if I clicked any of them it closed down IE and windows comes up with the error report. I right clicked the link and it directed me to a page with the address spy-sheriff although the page did not load.

upon seeing the spy-sheriff part I browsed the forums and downloaded all the information about removing the said malware, however, I have had problems with this.

I came home today and set about trying to remove the malware.

I have installed clean up but it wont run in safe mode or in normal mode. I can't install ewido full stop, and I have also tried the smitRem.exe and can't run that at all either.

I now can't open an IE page at all and it goes straight to the error report for microsoft. I can't run any programs at all including NORTON AV.

I have also tried to use windows XP system restore to no avail. The Laptop has windows XP home as its OS

I have managed to install and run hijack this. My log doesn't have any of the values listed in the spy-sheriff removal guide.I have posted my log below. I would be grateful of any help and advice you can offer.

Hi Alison,

I'm afraid I have very bad news for you. :(

You have a dangerous rootkit installed on your PC as evidenced by this line in your HijackThis log:

O20 - Winlogon Notify: avpe32 - C:\windows\SYSTEM32\avpe32.dll

For more info see:
http://www.f-secure.com/v-descs/haxdoor.shtml

This is a very serious problem. A RAT (Remote Access Trojan) has also been installed alongside the rootkit. We do not know what else in the way of security settings or files have been altered. Everything on the computer would be open to being suspect.
a RAT is like giving the hacker a seat in front of your keyboard. Anything you could do at the keyboard, they could do remotely with a RAT.

My best recommendation is to Disconnect from internet, format and re-install your Operating system and Applications. We can likely clean the infected files off computer but we cannot be sure that the files involved didn't do anything to your system to reduce overall system security.
You could be vulnerable to another attack as soon as you connect to net again.

You are strongly advised to do the following immediately:

1. Disconnect infected computer from the internet and from any networked computers until the computer can be cleaned.

2. Call all of your banks, credit card companies, financial institutions and inform them that you may be a victim of identity theft and to put a watch on your accounts or change all your account numbers.

3. From a clean computer, change *all* your online passwords -- for ISP login, email, for banks, financial accounts, PayPal, eBay, online companies, any online forums or groups you belong to.

Do NOT change passwords or do any transactions while using the infected computer because the attacker will get the new passords and transaction information.

and what ever else seems appropriate.
