Hi mak_20789,

I recieved an 8 MB pdf file on yahoo messenger from someone I dont know personally. Then one of my friends told me that its possible to hack my laptop that way

While this is a possible way to hack your laptop it is not very likely. We will do some tests to make sure that your computer has not been hacked.

Set Your Computer to Show All Files/Folders.

  • Click Start.
  • Click My Computer (Computer in Vista)..
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View Tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
  • Uncheck Hide protected operating system files (recommended).
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Uncheck the Hide file extensions for known file types.
  • Click OK.
In addition, go to Start, Search. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that 'Search system folders', 'Search hidden files and folders', and 'Search subfolders' are checked.

Next

Upload a File to Virustotal

Please go to Virustotal

Copy/paste this file and path into the white box at the top:
C:\Program Files\Appliction\Enter\Remote.exe

Press Submit - this will submit the file for testing.
Please wait for all the scanners to finish then copy and paste the results in your next response.

Now please repeat this process with the file

C:\Program Files\Appliction\Enter\Schedule.exe

Next

TFC(Temp File Cleaner):

  • Please download TFC to your desktop,
  • Save any unsaved work. TFC will close all open application windows.
  • Double-click TFC.exe to run the program.
  • Click the Start button in the bottom left of TFC
  • If prompted, click "Yes" to reboot.

Note: Save your work. TFC will automatically close any open programs, let it run uninterrupted. It should not take longer than a couple of minutes , and may only take a few seconds. Only if needed will you be prompted to reboot.

Next

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware:

  • Please run Malwarbytes Antimalware
  • Click on the Update tab and then click Check for Updates
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please post that log in your next reply.
The log can also be found here:
  1. Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  2. Click on the Logs radio tab.

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Please post the contents of the Malwarebytes log and the 2 results from the Virustotal scans in your next reply.

Hi deltalima,

thank you for the reply.
I followed all your steps.

1) Regarding: Set Your Computer to Show All Files/Folders.
All the items you told to uncheck were already unchecked.
And in Search, all the items you told to check were already checked.

2)Virustotal scans:

File Remote.exe received on 2009.12.30 13:14:14 (UTC)
Current status: Loading ... queued waiting scanning finished NOT FOUND STOPPED
Result: 0/41 (0%)

File Schedule.exe received on 2009.12.30 13:22:24 (UTC)
Current status: Loading ... queued waiting scanning finished NOT FOUND STOPPED
Result: 0/41 (0%)

Btw, these are the programmes that came with the TV tuner card CD.

3) Ran TFC.

4) MBAM didnt find anything, and gave no options to remove anything.
However in quarantine section, I see 3 Trojan.Droppers with date 10/30/2009

MBAM log:

Your copy of HijackThis needs to be in a folder of it's own.
When HJT fixes anything, it makes backups of the original files in the folder it is in. For this reason it cannot be run from the desktop. Having the backups could be VITAL to restoring your system if something went wrong in the FIX process!

1. Please go to you're 'My Documents' folder, right-click and select 'New > Folder' then name the folder 'HJT'.

2. Cut and paste HijackThis.exe to the new folder.

3. Right click on hijackthis.exe and select send to > desktop
this will make a new shortcut.

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

  1. Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  2. It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  3. When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  4. Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs

Hi deltalima,
thank you for your reply.
I followed your instructons about hijackThis and now I have a "shortcut to HijackThis.exe" on my desktop.

I also scanned with Kaspersky online scanner, which found nothing. As a matter of fact, I scan regularly with it and Trend micro online, both found nothing. But I installed Trend Micro Internet Security Pro, and it caught a keylogger that I had downloaded from Sourceforge sometime ago and forgotten.

Here's the log:

Hi mak_20789,

We have done extensive testing and there is no sign of any infection from the PDF that you were sent.

Please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

Set Correct Settings For Files That Should Be Hidden
  • Click Start > My Computer > Tools menu (at top of page) > Folder Options > View tab
  • Under Hidden files and folders if necessary select Do not show hidden files and folders
  • If unchecked, checkHide protected operating system files (Recommended)
  • If necessary check Display content of system folders
  • If necessary Uncheck Hide file extensions for known file types
  • Click OK

Create a new, clean System Restore point which you can use in case of future system problems:
  • Press Start >> All Programs >> Accessories >>System Tools >> System Restore
  • Select Create a restore point, then Next, type a name like All Clean then press the Create button and once it's done press Close
  • Now remove old, infected System Restore points:
  • Next click Start >> Run and type cleanmgr in the box and press OK
  • Ensure the boxes for Recycle Bin, Temporary Files and Temporary Internet Files are checked, you can choose to check other boxes if you wish but they are not required.
  • Select the More Options tab, under System Restore press Clean up... and say Yes to the prompt
  • Press OK and Yes to confirm

Update your AntiVirus Software and keep your other programs up-to-date
It is vital that you update your Antivirus programs and other security products regularly to avoid new threats that could infect your system.
You can use one of these sites to check if any updates are needed for your pc.
Secunia Software Inspector
F-secure Health Check

Advised Optional update:

There is a new service pack for XP, namely SP3. I advise you download/install this as it will increase the security side of your system.

Download can be found here or the CD ordered for your country here <--scroll down to and click on 'How to obtain Windows XP Service Pack 3 on a CD'

Please read this Microsoft article before actually installing the aforementioned service pack.

Security Updates for Windows, Internet Explorer & Microsoft Office
Whenever a security problem in its software is found, Microsoft will usually create a patch so that after the patch is installed, attackers can't use the vulnerability to install malicious software on your PC. Keeping up with these patches will help to prevent malicious software being installed on your PC. Ensure you are registered for Windows updates via Start > right-click on My Computer > Properties > Automatic Updates tab or visit the Microsoft Update site on a regular basis.

Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Here are some additional utilities that will enhance your safety

Stand Up and Be Counted ---> Malware Complaints <--- where you can make difference!

The site offers people who have been (or are) victims of malware the opportunity to document their story and, in that way, launch a complaint against the malware and the makers of the malware.
