Hi there!

I have attatched my logfile below. I often run ad-aware and spybot to clean my system and have never had any major problems that I could not fix myself. However, I was recently downloading various music production software programes (most now deleted) and the next day, my computer was running fine then a short while later began to tell me I have spyware etc - 'winfix' dowload requests kept popping up and in the bottom right corner, a red circle with a white x, with a note attached saying something about a spyware infection.
I ran ad-aware and spybot, and at some point i needed to restart the computer..i think this was during winfix application, and thats when the main problem occurred. It got as far as showing the desktop icons and then a message saying "oxc 0000135 error press ok to terminate application". then regardless of whether or not you press OK, the computer restarts itself, then gets to the same point, and does it all over again. I worked in safe mode, to run more adware with updates, and also 'avast! antivirus'. This found many trojans and deleted all infected files accordingly. I tried to download norton antivirus but it requested me to restart in normal mode - which was my problem in the first place!
Since then, the problem still persists! Your help would be much appreciated, thanks in advance!
ps - would also like to know, as am running a wireless and cable internet work in the house, should I warn other users?

download VirtumundoBeGone from:
http://secured2k.home.comcast.net/tools ... BeGone.exe

* Save it to your Desktop
* Close all running programs (including your Internet Browser)
* Double-click VirtumundoBeGone.exe on the desktop
* Follow the directions as indicated

please be advised that this program will generate a "BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH"... this is an expected/necessary part of the process, so don't be surprised when it happens.

just reboot if your system "jams"
*********************

It's now time to report back to us:

VirtumundoBeGone generated a "log" file of its own, which it should have placed on your Desktop... please REPLY to this topic, and copy/paste the VirtumundoBeGone log back here, along with your latest HJT log.

i ran the programs as it said, ewido found around 65 infections and cleaned them. then did another hjt log, however when i went to connect to the internet and send the log, it told me 'cannot find file:///:/secure32.html'
this was in safe mode, i am still having the same problem with normal mode - reaches sart up, then restarts itself with the message oxc 0000135 error. if you need me to get the hjt log to u i can xfr it to someone else computer, but don't want to give them any of my infections! otherwise, how would i get the internet to reconnect? is this looking like i'm going to have to reinstall windows? or can i be saved?!
Thanks! :) pinky

The log file can be transfered via a floppy disk - it is just a text file so should not harm the other computer.

Please set your system to show all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

Close all programs leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following, making sure you get them all and not any others by mistake:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = c:\secure32.html
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = c:\secure32.html

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Reboot into Safe Mode: please see here if you are not sure how to do this.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and delete them (if found):

c:\secure32.html
C:\Program Files\Acceleration Software\
C:\Program Files\SurfSideKick 3\
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Folders\ibm00001.exe
C:\Documents and Settings\Pinky\order_tdmg.exe (Unless you know what this is.)

C:\WINDOWS\System32\wwwloader.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\symsvcsa.exe
C:\WINDOWS\inet20010\
C:\Program Files\MyWebSearch\
C:\WINDOWS\system32\s688lglu16q8.dll
C:\WINDOWS\System32\dcom_13.dll

Exit Explorer, and reboot as normal afterwards.

Post back a fresh HijackThis log and we will take another look.

==============

Re the following.

Could you find the file on your computer with 'windows explorer'.
Right click the file - properties - and copy down what information is available - including any makers name etc.

There is a virus that uses that name, but it normally installs to a different folder - so I need to 'know' what this one thinks it is.

O23 - Service: Network Monitor - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\Network Monitor\netmon.exe

Ok, i ran the HJT scan and checked and deleted the files you asked.

I also searched with explorer for the other files, i found most of them and deleted them, and emptied my recycle bin. The 'order_tdmg.exe' - i double clicked it to see if i knew what it was, and my computer suddenly restared when i clicked it, thats now deleted too.

The only problems were:

acceleration files, when i click on the first folder shown in the search, called anti-virus, and try to delete it says: ' cannot delete dsshell.dll: Access denied, make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use.' It found around 640 files under this search, most with the words defender (read only files), and trojan and spy in thier names. i tried to delete some individually, managed a couple but then the explorer program crashed and so i had to close it, tried a few times, same thing happened.

with the surfsidekick search, when i press search it tells me that it ' refers to a location that is unavailable, could be on a hard drive on the computer or on a network. Check to make sure the disk is properly inserted and you are connected to the internet. If you still cannot locate, information may have been moved to another location'.

Lastly, the unknown file you asked me to search, it came up, clicked on properties but had very little information. Only that it was created 28th jan 06, and under the security tab, it told me group and user names:
administator: honey\admin (honey is someone in my family who used to have an account on this computer, so don't know if thats relevant)
pinky: honey/pinky
power users: honey/power users
system
users: honey/users
that was all...
do i need to delete this file?

heres the HJT log i ran after the above:

Well if that was the create date it would be malware - and seems supported by other evidence that I have been given. Any legit software would have had the makers name - and the date of creation would be older than just a few days ago.

If that user account is no longer in use it might be best that it is deleted.

Please set your system to show all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this. (you will need to reverse this when you are clean.)

Close all programs leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following, making sure you get them all and not any others by mistake:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [eanth_critical_update_alert] C:\PROGRA~1\ACCELE~1\ANTI-V~1\EANTH_~1.EXE /Startup
O4 - Global Startup: MyWebSearch Email Plugin.lnk = C:\Program Files\MyWebSearch\bar\2.bin\MWSOEMON.EXE
O23 - Service: Network Monitor - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\Network Monitor\netmon.exe

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

[*]Reboot into Safe Mode: please see here if you are not sure how to do this.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders, and delete them:

C:\Program Files\Acceleration Software\
C:\Program Files\MyWebSearch\
C:\Program Files\Network Monitor\netmon.exe

Exit Explorer, and reboot as normal afterwards.

Post back a fresh HijackThis log and we will take another look.
See if you can do so in normal mode - as I think the previous HJT logs have been done in safe mode.

BTW at least one of the things on your computer is a keylogger.

Here is some info on it.

See here http://www.sophos.com/virusinfo/analyse ... pigae.html

and here http://research.sunbelt-software.com/th ... atid=41762

I will give you a quote from one of those pages.

Threat type: Key Logger - A key logger program runs in the background, recording all the keystrokes made by a user. Once keystrokes are logged, they are hidden in the machine for later retrieval, or shipped secretly raw to the attacker via email or over the Internet.

Advice: Remove

Threat risk: Severe Risk
Severe threats typically are remotely exploitable vulnerabilities, which can lead to system compromise. Successful exploitation does not normally require any interaction and exploits are in the wild. There exists a high possibility of potential system damage or security flaw. Attacker has complete control over your computer or install new software on your machine.

Description: Srv.BigBlue.01 is keylogger program used to capture sensitive information on the infected computer.

If you use this computer for things like banking and shopping you should tell your bank and shop - from another computer - and change all your passwords as soon as possible.

If you use banking etc you might like to consider doing a reformat of your machine, it could have been very badly comprimised.

We can clean - in fact you are almost clean now, BUT, you will possible have had security settings changed on this machine by the malware that might get overlooked, which might leave you vulnerable to other malware in the future.

i can now start the computer in normal mode - although it takes a long time to start up.
i have definately applied the show hidden folders thing, still cannot delete the accelerate files, same error message as before.
I recognise accelerate from previous adaware scans i used to do so i will run an updated scan in a minute to see if can get rid of them.
i keep getting a windows message saying this system has recovered from serious error, as soon as i click close, it pops up again! I have moved it to the edge of the screen, but can i stop it completely?

when you say reformat - does that mean completely reinstall windows? i may do this, as i do not want to risk my banking information.

here is the latest hijack log from normal mode:

Yes that is what I do mean - do you have a reinstall CD for doing so.

One of the reasons you got infected is you do not have any updates to windows on the machine - so security is very bad on it.

Re your startup problem that would be this line.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [KernelFaultCheck] %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -k

Use HJT to fix that line (with all other windows closed) then try a reboot to see it that fault goes away.

I suggest a format and reinstall might be your best bet now, so you will need to save all your data (including email and favorites) to CD or some other media.

If you do decide to reformat and reinstall I will give you a link to some instructions to make sure you do so safely. Even coming back online to get AV or windows updates (after a reinstall) without some protection could get you infected within 30 seconds.

http://sos.its.psu.edu/guides/GeneralWindows.pdf

That is the instructions provided by one university for thier students on reinstalling windows and XP is the example they use.

As you know my daughter I suggest you get her to 'borrow' my copy of SP2 (I have a full copy on CD) so that you do not need to download that after you install. Not sure if you are one of her local friends or from further away, so she will post to you if required.

In the public library (in this forum) is this topic.
http://www.malwareremoval.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=14
which has lots of recommendations for programs to install to help keep you safe.

When you get online for the first time, get your AV updated first, then all the other anti-malware programs, then windows before trying to use for anything else. Download a copy of your AV and the other anti-malware programs BEFORE you reinstall windows, burn to CD, that way you can have them installed before you go on the net for the first time.

This article by Tony is a good read to help you keep safe.

Let me know if you have any problems.
