AntiMalware, Windows Security Centre and Google Installer

Unread postby RnD123 » December 18th, 2009, 2:33 pm

Please help!

My PC (Dell Dimension 8400) has been working error free for a number of years but seems now to have been infected with a number of Virus/Malware. The first indication was a pop-up "from" AntiMalware the exact details of which i can't remember but this was closely followed by further pop-ups telling me my computer was being attacked from a remote host and, apparently random sound bites playing. At the same time i received pop-ups "from" Windows Security Centre informing me I had no Anti Virus software running. Recognising these as malicious I hope I have now fixed them using forums such as this one, online - hopefully my HJT log will confirm this. At some point in time my McAfee Security Centre was also disabled adn I could not restart it! I booted into Safe Mode and ran a McAfee scan and let it do its thing and also (within Safe Mode) used TweakUI to clean and defrag the registry.
After booting up everything appeared normal - for approx. 2 minutes when two pop-ups appeared simultaneously:

google installer encountered a problem and needed to close
google installer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience

and shortly after the PC freezes. This is where I currently am! Also I have removed internet/network access from the infected PC.

Please now find below my HJT log and the Uninstall Log, I look forward to hearing from you, Richard.

Re: AntiMalware, Windows Security Centre and Google Installer

Unread postby Axephilic » December 22nd, 2009, 3:49 pm

Hello and sorry about the delay,

Welcome to the Malware Removal Forums! My name is Adam and I will be assisting you with getting the malware off of your computer. Please observe the following points before we start:
  1. If at any point you don't understand something, please let me know and I will be glad to expain or go more into depth for you. :)
  2. Please remember, I am a volunteer and I have a personal life. I go to school full time, have a part time job, and I do sports. A lot of this takes a lot of time.
  3. Please keep all of your replys in this topic/thread and do not make a new topic/thread, thanks!
  4. Please stick with this, don't stop responding because the symptoms are gone, the infection could still be there. Keep replying to my posts until I give you the All Clean message. ;)
  5. If you don't reply within three days after my last instructions this topic will be closed. If you will not be able to reply within three days please tell me so the topic will not be closed.
  6. Please do not run other tools to remove the malware unless I ask you to until I give you the all clean. They will just mess up my fixes and make things more complicated, not fix the problem.

If you still need help, please do the following:

P2P Warning!

With reference to Malware Removal's P2P Programs Policy, please uninstall the following programs before we continue:

  1. Click on Start > Control Panel and double click on Add/Remove Programs.
  2. Locate the following programs and click on the Change/Remove button to uninstall them.

    Ares 1.8.5
    BitTorrent 3.4.2
    LimeWire 5.1.2
    Shareaza version 2.2.5.0
  3. Close Add/Remove Programs and Control Panel when done.

RSIT
  • Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized)

Regards,
Adam

Hi Adam, delighted to hear from you. I have copied and pasted the two files from RSIT below, after having removed the P2P software as you requested. I know with the Christmas holidays the last thing you want to be doing is fixing other peoples problems but I really appreciate anything you can do for me. Have a great Xmas, Richard.

Re: AntiMalware, Windows Security Centre and Google Installer

Are you sure you removed the P2P programs? They are still showing in the logs and if you did not actually remove them, it would be dangerous for us to continue. Please ensure they are no longer in your Add/Remove programs and let me know.

Thanks,
Adam

Any operations I have carried out have been in Safe Mode as otherwise I get about 2 minutes before everything hangs. I removed the P2P software under the Admin account but ran the logs under my own sign-on. I tried to remove them again just now signed on under my own account and was told they have already been removed so I opted to remove them from the remove list. I can produce the two logs again now if you require me to do so. Thanks in advance,
Richard.

Hello,

Download and Run ComboFix
Please visit this page to download and run Combofix - http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Save it to your desktop.

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of its process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. You will see the following message if Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is not installed.

With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue its malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Image

Click on Yes to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, a log will be produced. Please post this log in your next reply.

Do not mouse click on Combofix while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

RootRepeal
Please download RootRepeal to your desktop
  • Unzip it to it's own folder, close all other programs especially your security programs (anti-spyware, anti-virus, and firewall) and run RootRepeal.exe
  • Click the Report tab at the bottom and then the Scan button.
  • A box will pop up, check the boxes beside Drivers, Files, Processes and click OK.
  • Another box will open, check the boxes beside all the drives, eg : C:\, then click OK.
  • The scan will take a little while to run, so let it go unhindered.
  • Once it is done, click the Save Report button, call it RepealScan and save the log to your desktop. Post that log here in your reply

In your next reply, please include:
  1. ComboFix log
  2. Rootrepeal log
  3. A new HijackThis log

Re: AntiMalware, Windows Security Centre and Google Installer

Unread postby RnD123 » December 27th, 2009, 7:55 am

Adam,

I have tried running ComboFix (in safe mode as Administrator and under my on log-in) and am told that McAfee VirusScan is active. I have no "M" in the system tray where I can unload this and neither will Security Centre start so I can disable it from there. Is it ok to go ahead and run CF and if not, have you any suggestions how to end McAfee.
Thanks again,

Richard

PS. I am now getting a message from the system tray: swxcacls.cfxxe is corrupt and unreadable, run CHKDSK.

I think that file is part of ComboFix. Please just try and run combofix without disabling McAfee.

Adam,

The first time I ran ComboFix, after a couple of reboots I got a "blue screen of death"! I re-ran and have attached the log along with the RepealScan Log. The new HJT log I have pasted below:

Unread postby Axephilic » December 28th, 2009, 5:17 pm

Hello there,

You have a VERY serious infection known as a rootkit. Rootkits are specialist programs designed to patch the Windows kernel with the intention of hiding themselves from Windows.
What does this mean? Rootkits hide files. And really good rootkits hide really bad files.

We do have tools to detect rootkits, but the problem with these is that they still require Windows to operate, and an exceptionally advanced rootkit might therefor have patched the Windows kernel in such a way that even our specialist tools are fooled - because in the end, they're nothing more than kernel-privileged (= highest permissions possible) applications.

Don't worry - most rootkits don't exhibit this type of behaviour. They only patch the userland mode - which means that normal programs such as Windows Explorer will not detect them, but higher privileged kernel programs will.

However, we have also identified a small number of kernel rootkits. They completely patch the kernel, which is, in fact, the very essence of Windows. So they can potentially fool every scanner we have because of there high privileges.

Because of these functions, you should consider reformatting and reinstalling the operating system.

The thing is, Windows is now lying to you. And we can never be sure how deep this goes. Not all rootkits can be detected. Every rootkit can and will impair your computer's normal behaviour and stability, one way or another. We can somehow detect rootkits, but as all rootkit detectors need Windows to operate, we can't be sure they're not being lied to as well.

In any case involving rootkits, I cannot guarantee anything. The best course of action would be reformatting and reinstalling the operating system.

Let me know how you wish to proceed. If you don't want to format it, please follow these instructions:

Run ComboFix

1. Close any open browsers.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

3. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the codebox below into it:

Code: Select all
File::
c:\windows\system32\Drivers\HNPsSdk.drv
Folder::
c:\program files\Shareaza
c:\program files\LimeWire
c:\program files\Ares
c:\documents and settings\Deborah\Application Data\LimeWire
Registry::
[HKLM\~\services\sharedaccess\parameters\firewallpolicy\standardprofile\GloballyOpenPorts\List]
"6346:TCP"=-
"6346:UDP"=-
"3587:TCP"=-
"3540:UDP"=-

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\svchost]
"p2psvc"=-

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\ControlSet003\Services\PSSdk21]
Driver::
PSSdk21

Save this as "CFScript.txt", and as Type: All Files (*.*) in the same location as ComboFix.exe

Image

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt which I will require in your next reply.

Run GMER
Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here to your desktop.

  • Double click the exe file.
  • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan...click on NO, then use the following settings for a more complete scan.

    Image
Click the image to enlarge it

  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following ...
    • Sections
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
    • Show All (don't miss this one)
  • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
  • Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file which cannot be uploaded to your post.
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and attach it in reply.

**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries

In your next reply, please include:
  1. ComboFix log
  2. GMER log

Unread postby RnD123 » December 30th, 2009, 3:17 pm

I left the GMER rootKit scan running last night when I went to bed as it runs for some time! When i checked it this morning the PC had frozen so I have just started it again - I will post the results as soon as I can. Regards attempting to fix v's reformat & rebuild, I prefer to try to fix these problems as, although I have them somewhere, I can not immediately set my hands on the original Windows and Office CDs I need to do this - if the attempts to fix fail, then I will just have to search a bit better. I appreciate your time and help to date and that which will follow.
Regards,
Richard.

Sorry - got caught up with GMer! Tried running the CF Script today but am informed it has expired and i can only run in REDUCED FUNCTIONALITY mode. Is this sufficient, can i re-download from your previous link or do I need a new link?

Regards,
Richard
