I have a Dell with Windows XP. I am using Norton Internet Security 2005 with Anti
Virus, Anti Spyware, and Personal Firewall. Two thing started at around the same
time and I'm not sure if they are related. The Security Threat Log in Norton shows
that between Dec. 16 and Dec. 22 it either removed or denied access to several threats.
It removed UnSpy PC, Adware,WinProtect, Adware FastLook. Adware.Live Chat, Trojan
Favadd, and Trojan AdClicker. I have Norton set to run a complete scan every night.
All my scans since then find no threats.

The other thing that started happening around that time is that when I am on a web
site, and click on a link, I sometimes get redirected to the Google Search Page.
The page is filled in with some type of Adult or Pornographic search and the search
results. It is a different Adult search each time. I have never used Google to make
an Adult search. I have also gotten redirected to other searches such as "GreatBestBuy.Net"
and "Climbingsearch.Net". I have never visited these web sites. I do not get redirected
all the time, just sporadically. I can not figure out any pattern as to when this
happens.

I have run Lavasoft Adaware, Ewido, CWShredder and a couple of other spywear removal programs but still have the problem.

I need you to download a program to aide in our fix :

Please create a folder on your C:\ and give it a name (example:HJT)

HijackThis examines certain key areas of the Registry and Hard Drive and lists their contents. These are areas which are used by both legitimate programmers and hijackers

Click on HijackThis.exe
Put a check in "Don't show this frame again when I start HijackThis" at the bottom
Click "None of the above, just start the program"
Click on the Scan button
It will scan your system Do Not remove anything with HiJackThis until instructed!
When finished, Click on Save Log button, save the log to the file you put HijackThis in.

You may wish to print out a copy of these instructions to follow while you complete this procedure

You are currently using HijackThis from a temporary directory, this can cause problems.
HijackThis creates backups, these are needed in case of any recovery issues
Did you create a folder ?? (when you unzipped)
If not :
Please create a folder on your C:\ and give it a name (example:HJT), move HijackThis.exe to that folder. Run the program from that directory from now on.

Show Hidden Files :
Click Start
Open My Computer
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options
Select the View Tab
Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK

Download FixWareout© by LonnyRJones
Save it to your desktop and run it
Click Next, then Install, then make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish
The fix will begin; follow the prompts
You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so.
Your system may take longer than usual to load; this is normal.

When your system reboots, follow the prompts
Afterwards, HijackThis will launch. Please click Scan, and check the following items: (if present)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [dmero.exe] C:\WINDOWS\system32\dmero.exe

O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{DB067EE0-A47A-4324-A443-343D1B796506}: NameServer = 85.255.115.50,85.255.112.129

Click Fix Checked

Close HijackThis, and click OK to proceed
When finished, close the tool.

Open Windows Explorer, locate and Delete the following folders or files in BOLD : (if present)

C:\WINDOWS\system32\dmero.exe

Close Windows Explorer

Empty your Recycle Bin

Go to Start, Control Panel
Select Network and Internet Connections or Network Connections, depending on what view you are using
Right click on your default connection, usually local area connection for cable and dsl, and left click on properties Click the Networking tab. Double-click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item and select the radio dial that says :
Obtain DNS servers automatically
Press OK twice to get out of the properties screen

Go to Start, Run type cmd and hit OK
At the prompt type :

ipconfig /flushdns (that space between g and / is needed)

then hit enter
Type exit hit enter

Reboot, and post a fresh HijackThis log, along with the contents of the logfile C:\fixwareout\report.txt

You did fine !!

How is your system running now ??

Your log is CLEAN !!

Are you still being redirected ??

Here are a few tools that I recommend for protecting your system and keeping your system clean !!

Real Time Prevention
SpywareBlaster© by Javacool Software
Prevent the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, browser hijackers, dialers, and other potentially unwanted pests.
Block spyware/tracking cookies in Internet Explorer and Mozilla/Firefox.
Restrict the actions of potentially dangerous sites in Internet Explorer.
Consumes no system resources.

Download, run, check for updates, download updates, select all, protect against checked. All done. Check for updates every couple of weeks. If you have any errors running the program like a missing file see the link at the bottom of the javacool page
IESpyad© by EHowes : This will add several hundred Restricted Sites to the Restricted Site Zone in IE.

File Cleaners (temp, prefetch, cookie, etc)
2000/XP Only
ATF (Atribune Temp File) Cleaner© by Atribune
All Windows
CCleaner© by CCleaner.com

Spyware Scanners:
Ad-aware SE© by Lavasoft Scans your system for spyware and other threats
a² Scanner© by Emsi Software : Scans for Malware and Trojans on your system.

Good Free Antivirus Programs:
AVG© by Grisoft
Avast© by ALWIL Software
NOTE:Remember always have just 1 antivirus program running at a time. Having more than one running causes a conflict between the programs !! You can use one as a backup to run manually

Windows Update:
It's also very important to keep your system up to date to avoid unnecessary security risks
Windows Update

Firewalls:
If you have an "always on " internet connection, such as DSL or Cable, I recommend a Firewall.
A firewall will make your pc invisible to the outside world and will filter the outgoing and incoming traffic on your pc.
For a good idea of how vulnerable your system(s) are go to GRC
Scroll down to "Shields Up" Click on "Proceed" Then click on "Common Ports"to scan your ports.
Very good Firewalls :
ZoneAlarm Firewall© by Zone Labs
Sunbelt Kerio Personal Firewall© by Sunbelt

These next steps are optional, but will provide the greatest protection
Use ANY browser besides Internet Explorer, almost every exploit is crafted to take advantage of an IE weakness
Alternative Browsers:
FireFox© by Mozilla
Opera© by Opera Software ASA

Java Runtime Environment© Sun Microsystems. It's much more secure than Microsoft's Java Virtual Machine .

Always keep your Antivirus & Spyware Removal Tools current with the latest definitions and updates !!

Using these tools and keeping them updated will reduce the risk of future infections!!

Do you have any questions??

Linkmaster,

Thanks, so far tonight I haven't been redirected. I think that I'm all set. Could you tell what my computer was infected with?

I did download SpywearBlaster the other day and also a2. I'm not really that good with the computer but what do I do to change browsers? Is it difficult?

Thanks again,

Norman

You are very Welcome !! 8)

You had the Wareout infection !!

Changing Browsers is just downloading and installing the browser of your choice and using it instead of IE.

You will need to set some of the options to your liking !! But thats it !
