My slow PC

Unread postby Rotorhead » April 14th, 2005, 3:01 pm

First, let me say I am not extremely tech-savvy.

My computer seems to run very slow. I recently added 512 mb RAM, thinking my current 256 was the issue. I update my Symantec virus definitions regularly and run Ad-aware every few weeks. All indictations are that my system is clean, but I don't think they are accurate.

I have a cable connection that is very slow. Furthermore, I even have delays when clicking on icons before the program selected begins to spool up.
Any help here would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks alot.
:)

Hi Rotorhead
Welcome to Malware Removal Forums.
I'm looking over your log file and will get back to you soon. However I can already see at least one infection.

Hi Rotorhead

There are some infections on your computer.

RED or UNDERLINED words are links that can be clicked.

HOW TO:
Show hidden files and folders in Windows.
Reboot in safe mode. If you have a keyboard with a "F Lock" key click it so that the "F" light above it is on when you start tapping the "F8" key.
How to print the fix instructions
Click the red links above.

How to unzip a downloaded zip file.
Place the zip file in the folder where you want the unzipped program to be.
If you are running Windows XP you simply right click the zip file and select "Extract Files".
For the other versions of Windows you will need a program like 7-Zip . If you decide to use 7-Zip down load the newest version that is not a beta version.
Open 7-Zip. Navigate to to the downloaded zipfile and highlight it. Right click and select "Extract Here"

When asked to post a new HijackThis log please
Close all windows and browsers.
Find the HijackThis folder. Open it and double click "HijackThis.exe". Click "Do a system scan" and save a "logfile". (If Hijack this shows a "Scan" buttonit is OK.)
The "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log" button. Click it. Click "Ctrl-A" (the "Ctrl" key and the "A" key at the same time)to highlight the whole log. Now click "Ctrl-C" to copy the text. Open this topic and click the "Add Reply" button at the bottom of the page. Paste the log into the window that opens up by clicking "Ctrl-V". Click "Add Reply" to post.

DO NOT MAKE ANY CHANGES OR CLICK "FIX CHECKED" UNTIL INSTRUCTED TO DO SO. SOME OF THE FILES ARE LEGIT AND VITAL TO YOUR COMPUTER'S HEALTH

1. Please copy the instructions to a notepad or preferably print them.

2. Make sure to work through the fixes exactly as given and in the exact order they are mentioned below.

3. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.

4. Configure Windows to show all files.

5. If you have not installed Surfmonkey on your computer please click "Start" > "Control Panel". Double-click "Add or Remove Programs". Find Surfmonkey. Remove the program

6. Open HijackThis and click "Do a System Scan Only". (If HijackThis shows a "Scan" button that is OK.) When the scan is finished put a check mark by the items that are listed in below. If you can not find an item just continue but inform me with your next post. Do not click fix until instructed to do so:

O1 - Hosts: 12.129.205.209 search.netscape.com12.129.205.209 sitefinder.verisign.com
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AF10A675] C:\WINDOWS\System32\sctgrvxazr.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Microsoft Updates] wkssvr.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [Microsoft Update] wserv32.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [30AF2B11] C:\WINDOWS\System32\sctgrvxazr.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [Microsoft Updates] wkssvr.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Microsoft Updates] wkssvr.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Microsoft Update] wserv32.exe

This is optional. "Quick launch System Tray Icon for Quicktime Player". Not needed unless you use Quicktime regularly. Will reappear every time you use the player though unless you start Quicktime player, click on "Edit"> "Preferences"> "Quicktime Preferences" and uncheck "Quicktime System Tray Icon".
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] C:\WINDOWS\System32\qttask.exe

If you removed Surfmonkey in point 5 please check that this line is not present.
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ELNKProxy] C:\WINDOWS\surfmonkey\smproxy.exe.
If it does exist and you want to get rid of Surfmonkey, check mark the line.

Close all open windows except HijackThis and then click the "Fix checked" button.

7. Reboot into Safe Mode: please see above if you are not sure how to do this.

8. Using Windows Explorer, locate the following file and delete it:
C:\WINDOWS\System32\sctgrvxazr.exe
If you checkmarked the Surfmonkey line please delete the following folder: C:\WINDOWS\surfmonkey
Exit Explorer

9. Please do a search:
"Run "Start">"Search">"All Files and Folders"> enter wkssvr.exe in "All or part of file name". Select "More advanced options". Check-mark "Search System Folders", "Search hidden files and folders", and "Search subfolders". Click "Search". Right click the file and select delete.
Repete the process for wserv32.exe

10. Reboot in "Normal Mode".

11. * Close ALL windows except "HijackThis"
* SCAN with "HijackThis"
* POST the new log in this thread using "Add Reply"

Back again...
Followed the instructions but was unable to disable Quick launch System Tray Icon. It would not give me the option under "Q-time preferences"

Results are posted below. The system seems a little quicker, but cannot
tell for sure yet.

Hi again Rotorhead.

It is of no major importance that you could not switch of "Quicktime System Tray Icon". It is only a very minor matter and was only added because we anyhow had to do other fixes.
However, I do not knoew if you missed one line when you did the fixes in the last post or if the line is stubborn. We will see.

Close all open windows except HijackThis and then click the "Fix checked" button.

* Close ALL windows except "HijackThis"
* SCAN with "HijackThis"
* POST the new log in this thread using "Add Reply"
