Browser Hijacker giving 404 errors, redirects, etc.

Unread postby rg6 » November 22nd, 2009, 7:15 pm

I apparently have a browser hijacker. I use Mozilla Firefox 3.5.3, but the problem also occurred when I tried IE7. I am regularly suffering from (1) 404 errors, (2) links being redirected to unknown pages (3) favicon changes on the bookmark toolbar (4) a Firefox warning that something out of the ordinary is happening asking if I want to "get out of here" (which I have not always heeded, but now do).

Generally, if I restart my computer the problem goes away for a while. This is not always true. The Hijackthis log file below was created just after things started to go bad this evening.

Your help is appreciated!

Please note that all instructions given are customised for this computer only, the tools used may cause damage if used on a computer with different infections.

If you think you have similar problems, please post a log in the HJT forum and wait for help.

Please take time to read the Malware Removal Forum Guidelines and Rules where the conditions for receiving help at this forum are explained.

Hi rg6. :)

I'm Dakeyras and I am going to try to assist you with your problem. Please take note of the below:

  • I will start working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine!.
  • The process is not instant. Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine is clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • Refrain from running self fixes as this will hinder the malware removal process.
  • It may prove beneficial if you print of the following instructions or save them to notepad as I post them.
  • Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.

Security Application Check:

Please download and save SecurityCheck.exe to your Desktop from one of the links below.

Link 1
Link 2

  • Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
  • A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt
  • Please post the contents of that document in your next reply.

Scan with RSIT:

  • Please download Random's System Information Tool by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
Make sure that RSIT.exe is on the your Desktop before running the application!
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open:
    • log.txt will be opened maximized.
    • info.txt will be opened minimized.
  • Please post the contents of both log.txt and info.txt.

Note: Both logs can also be located within this folder rsit at the root of your installed Hard-Drive. EG: C:\rsit

When completed the above, please post back the following in the order asked for:

  • How is you computer performing now, any further symptoms and or problems encountered?
  • SecurityCheck Log.
  • Both RSIT logs. <-- Post them individually please, IE: one Log per post/reply.

Hi. :)

Reset SP3 Firewall:

Click on Start >> Run... and cut/paste in the following and click on OK
Code: Select all
firewall.cpl
Click on the Advanced tab >> Restore Defaults >> At the prompt click on Yes >> OK

Now click on the General tab >> select Off(not recommended) >> OK.

Note: No need for it to be active after the reset becuse you have the ZoneAlarm Firewall active.

TFC(Temp File Cleaner):

  • Please download TFC to your desktop,
  • Save any unsaved work. TFC will close all open application windows.
  • Double-click TFC.exe to run the program.
  • Click the Start button in the bottom left of TFC
  • If prompted, click "Yes" to reboot.

Note: Save your work. TFC will automatically close any open programs, let it run uninterrupted. It should not take longer than a couple of minutes , and may only take a few seconds. Only if needed will you be prompted to reboot.

Reset Host File:

  • Open Notepad.
  • Copy and Paste everything from the Code Box below into Notepad: <-- Start >> Run... type in notepad and select OK
Code: Select all
@Echo off
pushd\windows\system32\drivers\etc
attrib -h -s -r hosts
echo 127.0.0.1 localhost>HOSTS
attrib +r +h +s hosts
popd
del %0
  • Go to File >> Save As
  • Save File name as "Dakeyras.bat" <-- Make sure to include the quotes.
  • Change Save as Type to All Files and save the file to your Desktop.
  • It should look like this: Image

Now double click on the desktop Dakeyras.bat to run the batch file. It will self-delete when completed

Next:

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and select then follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please post that log in your next reply.
The log can also be found here:
  1. Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  2. Click on the Logs radio tab.

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Next:

Please make sure that RSIT.exe is still on the Desktop.(if not inform myself straight away please)

Click on Start >> Run...(or the Windows key and R togethor) to bring up the Run box and and copy and paste in:
"%userprofile%\desktop\rsit.exe" /info
and click on OK

  • Click on Run and RSIT will start.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open:
    • log.txt will be opened maximized.
    • info.txt will be opened minimized.
  • Please post the contents of both log.txt and info.txt.

When completed the above, please post back the following in the order asked for:

  • How is you computer performing now, any other symptoms and or problems encountered?
  • Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Log.
  • A new set of RSIT logs. <-- Post them individually please, IE: one Log per post/reply.

Update

Unread postby rg6 » November 27th, 2009, 5:54 pm

Ran the procedure from the last post. Files follow in subsequent posts.

Will have to run the computer for a while to see if problems persist.

Already had MalwareBytes (MBAM) installed on the computer, and not on the desktop and just made sure it was updated and then ran the quick scan.

Two pop-up windows came up during the scan listing malware, but closed by themselves before I could decide what action to take. Log file shows no malware found?? See next message.

Thank you for your help.

Re: Browser Hijacker giving 404 errors, redirects, etc.

Unread postby Dakeyras » November 27th, 2009, 7:33 pm

Hi. :)

Will have to run the computer for a while to see if problems persist.
OK fair enough.

Already had MalwareBytes (MBAM) installed on the computer, and not on the desktop and just made sure it was updated and then ran the quick scan.
Actually there was a specific reason I wanted you to download and install a new application. No harm done and I was remiss for not explaining this. Please except my apology for not explaining in full.

Two pop-up windows came up during the scan listing malware, but closed by themselves before I could decide what action to take. Log file shows no malware found?? See next message.
OK, can you recall exactly what generated this as in specific application and or merely a floating pop-up when using a browser?

Thank you for your help.
You're welcome!

Next:

I do have a fair few tasks for your good self to complete below, take your time and I have every confidence non will pose a problem.

Show Hidden Files:

  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View Tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
  • Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.

Upload a Suspicious File:

There are quite a few files I do not recognise, please carry out the following so one can be tested:-

Please go to my file submission channel here.

Next to the box:- Link to topic where this file was requested: Add in the below:-

Code: Select all
http://www.malwareremoval.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=47519&p=488242#p488242

Next to the box: Browse to the file you want to submit: click on the Browse... tab and navigate to the below:-

C:\WINDOWS\system32\LogTagIO19_816.dll

Then click on the Send File tab. I will be notified when the file has been uploaded and checked.

Next:

I advise you consider uninstalling Spyware Doctor. It is not a particularly effective application in my humble opinion and it is active in system memory. The choice however is yours to make and I deem this a optional removal and it will be highlighted in red below.

Also I highly suggest you uninstall Registry Mechanic. I don't personally recommend the use of ANY registry cleaners.

Here is an excerpt from a discussion on regcleaners:-
Most reg cleaners aren't "bad" as such, but they aren't perfect and even the best have been known to cause problems.
The point we are trying to make is that the risk of using one far outweighs any benefit.
If it does work perfectly you will not see any difference
If it doesn't work properly you may end up with an expensive doorstop.

http://forums.whatthetech.com/Regcleaner_t42862.html

Out of date Adobe and Java installations pose a security risk. They can be used by malware as a means to infect a computer and or re-infect. We will update both in due course.

Now please go to Start >> Control Panel >> Add/Remove Programs and remove the following (if present):

Adobe Reader 7.0
Java(TM) 6 Update 13
Java(TM) 6 Update 7
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_07

Registry Mechanic 6.0
Spyware Doctor 6.0

To do so, click once on each of the above in turn to highlight and then click on the Remove button.

Note: Take extra care in answering questions posed by any Uninstaller. Some questions may be worded to deceive you into keeping the program.

MSConfig Advice:

Personally I do not think it wise to use the System Configuration Utility unless you know exactly what your are doing as otherwise serious problems may arise.

I advise you consider this application to use instead, it will also provide a extra layer of system protection via its monitoring activities.

WinPatrol:

Download it from here

You can find information about how WinPatrol works here

Note: Do not download/install just yet as it may hinder the malware removal process but by all means do so when I give the all clear if you so wish.

Backup the Registry:

Modifying the Registry can create unforeseen problems, so it always wise to create a backup before doing so.

  • Please go here and download ERUNT.
  • ERUNT (Emergency Recovery Utility NT) is a free program that allows you to keep a complete backup of your registry and restore it when needed.
  • Double click on erunt-setup.exe to Install ERUNT by following the prompts.
  • Use the default install settings but say no to the portion that asks you to add ERUNT to the Start-Up folder. You can enable this option later if you wish.
  • Start ERUNT either by double clicking on the desktop icon or choosing to start the program at the end of the setup process.
  • Choose a location for the backup. Note: the default location is C:\WINDOWS\ERDNT which is acceptable.
  • Make sure that at least the first two check boxes are selected.
  • Click on OK
  • Then click on YES to create the folder.

Note: if it is necessary to restore the registry, open the backup folder and start ERDNT.exe

Next:

Please download OTM to your Desktop.

  • Double-click OTM to start the program.
  • Copy the lines from the codebox to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + B (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):
Code: Select all
:Processes

:Reg
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\startupreg\mmtask]

  • Then click the red MoveIt! button.
  • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar) to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of it and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy), and paste it into your next response.
  • If OTM asks to reboot your computer, allow it to do so. The report should appear in Notepad after the reboot.
  • Close OTM.

F-Secure Blacklight:

Please download Blacklight from here to your desktop.

or

Link to it from the ftp site: ftp://ftp.f-secure.com/anti-virus/tools/fsbl.exe
and save it to your desktop from there.

Go to Start-->Run, copy in the following text, and press Enter:
"%userprofile%\desktop\fsbl.exe" /expert
Accept the license agreement.
Click > scan, wait for it to finish, then click Close

There will be a log on your desktop with the name fsbl.xxxxxxx.log (the xxxxxxx stand for numbers).
Copy and paste the contents of this log into your next reply.

When completed the above, please post back the following:

  • How is you computer performing now? Any problems encountered and or any further symptoms?
  • OTM Log.
  • Blacklight Log
  • A new RSIT Log. <-- Only one will be created this time.

Update 27 Nov

Unread postby rg6 » November 27th, 2009, 9:34 pm

I made a mistake in my last post. The popup windows were from the Anitvir antivirus program. It happened again while working on the OTM portion of your instructions. The popup referenced Crypt.PEPM.Gen trojan, but I couldn't copy all of the information before the popup disappeared.

I'm considering your suggestions on Spyware Dr. and Registry Mechanic. I'm not doing anything yet just to keep from muddying the process (like you suggested with WinPatrol).

You offered advice on MSConfig. I don't use that, so I'm not sure what to make of your advice.

You mention a new RSIT log to post... where does that come from? I don't see one generated in the folder with the past runs or on the desktop.

OTM did require a reboot. The log is posted in the next post, followed by a post with the Blacklight report.

Thank you.
