Hello MR's, I am newish to the computer, and not young, so I apologize in advance for the 'dumb' stuff I might say. I have picked up a bug that is causing a few minor changes - and decided to do system restore, but cannot access it at all - it says 'cannot restore' (I kept trying different dates). The only life in there was a little sign saying 'CinepPlayer 30 updated at 6 pm' - in the 'check this date' box. That was yesterday evening.

Here is my scan as per your guidelines:

Hello and welcome to Malware Removal Forums

IMPORTANT

Whatever repairs we make, are for fixing your computer problems only and by no means should be used on another computer.
To make cleaning this machine easier:-
  • Continue to respond to this thread until I give you the All Clean!
  • Please DO NOT uninstall/install any programs unless asked to. It is more difficult when files/programs appear or disappear from the logs.
  • Please do not run any scans other than those requested and do not post any logs/reports unless specifically requested to do so.
  • Please follow all instructions in the order posted.
  • If you have any questions or do not understand instructions, please ask before continuing.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

I have picked up a bug that is causing a few minor changes

Can you tell me what these changes are?

You have Zonealarm on your computer, can you tell me if this is only a Firewall or an Antivirus?

Make an uninstall list using HijackThis
To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:
  • Start HijackThis
  • Click on the Config button
  • Click on the Misc Tools button
  • Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
  • Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Save the file to your desktop.

Please post this log on your next reply.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and save to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to:

    Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform Full scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please copy and paste the log back into your next reply

    Note:
  • The log can also be found here:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt
  • Or via the Logs tab when Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware is started.

NEXT Download and Run: RSIT

  • Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized)

Please reply with:-
  • Uninstall list
  • MBAM log
  • RSIT logs ( info.txt and log.txt)

I don't know if I have bungled the RSIT scans, I could not find two files, unless both were in the one notepad? Sorry to be so inept.

CHANGES WERE:
I was writing an email, and it froze up, then when I tried to close it, it broke up into immovable chunks
I tried to close it down from the start menu but that did the same. I left it an hour or so and nothing changed.
I turned it off at the power point, back on, and restarted it, the order of the emails in sent items and ??? were disarranged, the next morning it disconnected four times in the first 20 minutes. It never does that.
I am on dial-up, I get 46 - 52 Kbps always, and if I unplug the phone before I connect, it never disconnects.
It was having trouble connecting to a website, timing out, and once there, doing the same changing from topic to topic.
The fan was working flat out hard non stop.
And the thing with system restore I mentioned initially. At first I just thought I had pressed a wrong button and scramble the email program up, so I decided to do system restore.
I did it about a month ago, but had not previous to that for 6 months. It was going through it's motions (backing up the system?) and then popping up a msg to say it could not do SR.
I chose some farther back dates, all same, and on the second day, the 'CinepPlayer 30 Updated last night at 6pm' sign appeared in the little 'click on this date to select your Sys.Restore date' box.
Then I wrote to MRU.

Zone Alarm is only a Firewall.

First and foremost is that you have NO Antivirus running on your machine, so we have to remedy that.

I see that you did have AVG it was probably too much of a resource hog for you as you are only running with 512mb of RAM. I will get you to run the AVG removal tool to get rid of the remnants of it.

Since you have none installed Please download a free anti-virus software from one these excellent vendors NOW:
1) Antivir PersonalEdition Classic- Free anti-virus software for Windows. Detects and removes more than 50,000 viruses. Free support.
Please note the following if you decide on Antivir Personal Edition
Avira AntiVir Personal - FREE Antivirus is only available for single computer use for home and non commercial use.

2) avast! 4.8 Home Edition - Anti-virus program for Windows. The home edition is freeware for noncommercial users.

Only one!

Next AVG Removal Tool

Download and save AVG Removal Tool to your desktop

Run it to remove AVG. After this, please restart your computer.

Next Open Hijack This and select Do a System Scan Only place a check next to the below lines if still present

    R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {EF99BD32-C1FB-11D2-892F-0090271D4F88} - (no file)
    O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {CD67F990-D8E9-11d2-98FE-00C0F0318AFE} - (no file)

Once selected close all windows except HJT an click on Fix Checked

Next Download and Run ATF Cleaner
Download ATF (Atribune Temp File) Cleaner© by Atribune to your desktop.

AVG has been on here and running well for about 2 1/12 years...I was away for a while recently and when I went to update AVG it said it would take over four hours, so I chose not. Then I switched from Telstra to Beagle, and they have a 'pay $2 pw extra and use our internet security'. So I just haven't used AVG since.
Speaking of Ram Hogs, Creative stuff was on here when I got it new from Dell. I only use it to watch 2 minute funny wmv vids
my daughter occasionally sends. It looks to me to take up a lot of space, and I have the disc, so was thinking I could delete it????
Care to Comment? Good Idea or not?

P2P program utorrent was in a free dvd with PCUser sept 08. It was first on the list on back, my daughter looked at it. It has never been used. So feel free.

The two files you mentioned were still there.

After doing the following, give me an update on any problems you are still having.

Then I switched from Telstra to Beagle, and they have a 'pay $2 pw extra and use our internet security'.

There is no antivirus installed or running? So what ‘internet security’ do you mean?

Speaking of Ram Hogs, Creative stuff was on here when I got it new from Dell. I only use it to watch 2 minute funny wmv vids
my daughter occasionally sends. It looks to me to take up a lot of space, and I have the disc, so was thinking I could delete it????
Care to Comment? Good Idea or not?

Rather than delete it, try changing the service from starting automatically. To manual start up. That way it will be there when you need it but not running all the time.

To do this:-
Click start then run then type in the run box services.msc then click ok.

Scroll down and find Creative Labs Licensing Service. Double click on it, In startup type select manual in the drop down box. Do the same for Creative Service for CDROM Access. You can change it back anytime.

This next step is your choice. The below items I am getting you to fix with HJT are for programs that do not need to start up when you turn your computer on. Doing the below step WILL NOT UNINSTALL these programs ONLY stop them from running at startup. All will be available when you need them. The bonus is it will make your startup time a bit shorter

Open Hijack This and select Do a System Scan Only place a check next to the below lines if still present

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [igfxtray] C:\WINDOWS\system32\igfxtray.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [igfxpers] C:\WINDOWS\system32\igfxpers.exe

On how it is running: all seems very good, not disconnecting or anything, BUT yesterday evening I tried to send an email with a couple of pics in, and it said Dr. Watson PostMortem etc had encountered probs and had to close, then the screen locked up, I tried to close outlook express, and the email, but a few chunks disappeared, and I left it, it sat for about 20 mins without the secreen changing at all, so I pressed Turn off computer on the start menu, and it did.
This morning the email was saved in outbox.
I have been sending and receiving (only a few small ones) emails o'k apart from that. Nothing else was running while I was in Outlook.
It has always closed like this sometimes when I'm try to send pics, (popping up the doctor, saving in outbox, then closing), but not the jamming and breaking up.
When I first go into Outlook Express after connecting to the internet, Zone Alarm always pops up an orange box and tells me it blocked traffic from 172.16.0.7 [TCP Port 1051] to 113.212.168.50 (POP3) [TCP Flags: S]. I have no idea if this is good/bad or indiffernet.

Thanks again, Jenni.

You say small emails work fine, in small you mean text etc? How big are the ‘pics’ you are trying to send. The problem may be that you need to reduce them first. You might need to contact Beagle and make sure OE is set up correctly. Did you have this problem when with Telstra? Either way at this stage it might not be malware causing this particular issue.

I would like you to run one more scan for me. It could take a while but well worth it.

ESET Online Scanner

Note: You can use either Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox for this scan. You will however need to disable your current installed Anti-Virus, how to do so can be read here.

Vista users: You will need to to right-click on the either the IE or FF icon in the Start Menu or Quick Launch Bar on the Taskbar and select Run as Administrator from the context menu.

  • Please go here then click on: Image
Note: If using Mozilla Firefox you will need to download esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe when prompted then double click on it to install.
All of the below instructions are compatible with either Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox.
  • Select the option YES, I accept the Terms of Use then click on: Image
  • When prompted allow the Add-On/Active X to install.
  • Make sure that the option Remove found threats is NOT checked, and the option Scan archives is checked.
  • Now click on Advanced Settings and select the following:
    • Scan for potentially unwanted applications
    • Scan for potentially unsafe applications
    • Enable Anti-Stealth Technology
  • Now click on: Image
  • The virus signature database... will begin to download. Be patient this make take some time depending on the speed of your Internet Connection.
  • When completed the Online Scan will begin automatically.
  • Do not touch either the Mouse or keyboard during the scan otherwise it may stall.
  • When completed select Uninstall application on close if you so wish, make sure you copy the logfile first!
  • Now click on: Image
  • Use notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\ESET\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt.
  • Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic.
Note: Do not forget to re-enable your Anti-Virus application after running the above scan!

Please reply with:-
  • ESET log
  • New HJT log

The pics in the emails are tichy-small ~ the one I mentioned had four pics: 82, 18, 49, and 89 KB. And one line of text.
The computer is now doing some things faster, as you said it might....scorching along!
Thanks so muchX.
OH, and the Active X option I was meant to 'yes' to, did not appear.

Malware wise, things look good! As I said you might have to inquire on some tech help site to help with the email problem or contact Beagle and get them to make sure it is all configured correctly.

A couple of small jobs still to do.

You should Download and Install the newest version of Adobe Reader for reading pdf files, due to the vulnerabilities in earlier versions.
All versions numbered lower than 9.2 are vulnerable.
  • Go HERE and click on AdbeRdr920_en_US.exe to download the latest version of Adobe Acrobat Reader.
  • Save this file to your desktop and run it to install the latest version of Adobe Reader.

Update Java Runtime

You are using an old version of Java. Sun's Java is sometimes updated in order to eliminate the exploitation of vulnerabilities in an existing version. For this reason, it's extremely important that you keep the program up to date, and also remove the older more vulnerable versions from your system. The most current version of Sun Java is: Java Runtime Environment Version 6 Update 17.
  • Go to Java Site
  • Click to Download Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 17
  • In Platform box choose Windows.
  • Check the box to Accept License Agreement and click Continue.
  • Click on Windows Offline Installation, click on the link under it which says "jre-6u17-windows-i586.exe" and save the downloaded file to your desktop.
  • Go to Start => Control Panel => Add or Remove Programs
  • Uninstall all old versions of Java (Java 3 Runtime Environment, JRE or JSE) listed below in the code box.
    Code: Select all
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03

  • Install the new version by running the newly-downloaded file with the java icon which will be at your desktop, and follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Reboot your computer

Let me know when the above is done and we will clean our tools up. :)

Due to lack of activity this topic is now closed.

If you still require help, please open a new thread in the Infected? Virus, malware, adware, ransomware, oh my! forum, include a fresh FRST log, and wait for a new helper.
