Security Tool Virus/Problem

Unread postby shethomas928 » November 1st, 2009, 12:20 am

Hi,

The other day I turned on my computer and one of the programs that showed up was a Security Tool program that I hadn't downloaded or installed on my computer. I didn't touch anything it was asking me to do (saying my computer was infected and if I wanted to get rid of them click this button). Other things I noticed: I have no desktop background (use to be a picture, not its a blue screen), until today I had no icons on my desktop either, they were all gone; my computer would also restart itself automatically after about 10 minutes. Just to be clear I do have icons on my desktop today, the security tool scan didn't come this time, but its still showing up as an icon on my desktop. My security system is avast. Any help you can give me I would really appreciate as I do use my desktop for a work at home job. Thanks!

Here is my Hijackthis Log:

Hi shethomas928,

Download/run Rkill:

Please download Rkill from one of the following links and save to your Desktop:

One, Two,Three or Four

  • Double click on Rkill.
  • A command window will open then disappear upon completion, this is normal.
  • Please leave Rkill on the Desktop until otherwise advised.

Note: If your security software warns about Rkill, please ignore and allow the download to continue.

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
Please save any items you were working on... close any open programs. You may be asked to reboot your machine.
Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop. If needed...Tutorial w/screenshots
Alternate download sites available here or here.
  1. Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  2. Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  3. When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  4. When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Then click Finish.
MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.
    • If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself.
    • Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
    • Problems downloading the updates? Manually download them from here and double-click on "mbam-rules.exe" to install.
On the Scanner tab:
  1. Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
  2. Then click on the Scan button.
  3. If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  4. The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  5. When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  6. Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
Back at the main Scanner screen:
  1. Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  2. Check all items except items in the C:\System Volume Information folder... then click on Remove Selected.
We will take care of the System Volume Information items later.
  3. When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below)
  4. The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
The log can also be found here:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt
  5. Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts.
Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process.
If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Now if Malwarebytes did not ask you to reboot please reboot now.

RSIT (Random's System Information Tool)
Please download RSIT by random/random... save it to your desktop.
  1. Double click on RSIT.exe to run it... read the disclaimer... click on Continue.
  2. RSIT will start running. When done... 2 logs files...will be produced.
The first one, "log.txt", <<will be maximized... the second one, "info.txt", <<will be minimized.
  3. Please post both... "log.txt" and "info.txt", file contents in your next reply.
(These logs can be lengthy, so post 1 log per reply please.)

Also please post the log from the Malwarebytes scan.

On the rkill scan a command window comes up, stays up for about 30 seconds, then everything on desktop disappears, then comes back up , and I get a logon.exe message that states: Another program is currently using this file.

Re: Security Tool Virus/Problem

Unread postby deltalima » November 8th, 2009, 4:37 pm

Hi shethomas928,

Please go to Kaspersky Online Virus Scanner © Kaspersky Lab to perform an online antivirus scan.

  1. Click on the Image ...button.
  2. The program will launch and fill in the Information section ... on the left.
  3. Read the "Requirements and Limitations" then press... the Image ...button.
  4. The program will begin downloading the latest program and definition files.
It takes a while... please be patient and let it finish.
  5. Once the files have been downloaded, click on the Image ...button.
In the scan settings make sure the following are selected:
    • Detect malicious programs of the following categories:
      Viruses, Worms, Trojan Horses, Rootkits
Spyware, Adware, Dialers and other potentially dangerous programs
    • Scan compound files (doesn't apply to the File scan area):
      Archives
      Mail databases
By default the above items should already be checked.
    • Click the Image ...button, if you made any changes.
  6. Now under the Scan section on the left:
      Select My Computer
  7. The program will start and scan your system. This will run for a while, be patient... let it run.
Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
  8. Save the scan results as a Text file ... save it to your desktop.
  9. Copy and paste the saved scan results file in your next reply.

Also please post an update on how the computer is running now.

Unread postby shethomas928 » November 10th, 2009, 7:54 am

My computer is running much better. Occasionally on my other two users I still get a Logmein.exe message that says someone is currently using this program. And the only other thing that happens is my webpages get redirected if I do an on lline search and clink on links (something other then what I want will come up). The computer is running back to normal.

Thanks for your help in this.

Hi shethomas928,

We still have some more work to do to ensure that the computer is clean.

There is an infected file autorun.exe on drive G:, if this is an external USB drive then please delete the file from that drive and then run a full online Kaspersky scan (as before) and post the log back here. Please repeat this process by attaching each USB device you have in turn and running a scan.

Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here.
  • Double click the .exe file. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent
  • If it gives you a warning at program start about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run a scan...click NO.
  • Run Gmer again and click on the Rootkit tab.
  • Look at the right hand side (under Files) and uncheck all drives with the exception of your C drive.
  • Make sure all other boxes on the right of the screen are checked, EXCEPT for "Show All".
  • Click on the "Scan" and wait for the scan to finish.
Note: Before scanning, make sure all other running programs are closed and no other actions like a scheduled antivirus scan will occur while this scan completes. Also do not use your computer during the scan.
  • When completed, click on the Copy button and right-click on your Desktop, choose "New" > Text document. Once the file is created, open it and right-click again and choose Paste or Ctrl+V. Save the file as gmer.txt and copy the information in your next reply.
  • Note: If you have any problems, try running GMER in SAFE MODE"
Important! Please do not select the "Show all" checkbox during the scan..

Please post the GMER log in your next reply.

Re: Security Tool Virus/Problem

Unread postby deltalima » November 12th, 2009, 7:07 am

Hi shethomas928,

How to use combofix:

Temporarily disable any antispyware, antivirus and or antimalware real-time protection as they may interfere with running of ComboFix.

Download ComboFix from here to your Desktop.

Close all programs.

Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.

If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it’s malware removal procedures, if not, then follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console. Once installed, you should see the following message:

The recovery console was successfuly installed.
Click ‘YES’ to continue scanning for malware
Click ‘NO’ for exit

Click the YES button.

The scan will temporarily disable your desktop, and if interrupted may leave your desktop disabled. If this occurs, please reboot to restore the desktop. Even when ComboFix appears to be doing nothing, look at your “drive access” light. If it is flashing, Combofix is still at work.

When finished ComboFix will produce a log file.

Earlier you posted
Occasionally on my other two users I still get a Logmein.exe message

Please generate separate HijackThis logs when logged into each account you have on your computer and post those logs here along with the log from Combofix.
