Popups and Symantec "required reboot" every 5 minutes

Unread postby daray » October 29th, 2009, 7:45 am

Please help. I've picked up something and can't get rid of it. Typical symptoms: slow operation, popup windows and Symantec keeps trying to fix whatever it is by forcing me to reboot. It never helps, though.

Here is my Hijack This log. Thank you to whoever responds.

Hi daray,
Sorry for the delay. You have quite a set of issues here.
Not sure if it can be repaired without a reformat/re-install.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Disable Windows Defender
Go to Start > All Programs > Windows Defender.
Click on the Tools menu, click General Settings, Scroll down to Real-Time Protection Options section and Deactivate the Real-Time Protection system.

Then, in the toolbar across the top there is a little downpointing arrow next to the question mark icon.
Click on that, get a drop down list. One of the options is to exit Windows Defender.
Click on that, and there will be a pop up asking if you are sure you want to exit. Click Yes/OK.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Disable Ad-Aware Service
This will work for either version 2007 or 2008
Go to Start, Run OR Start, Programs, Accessories, Command Prompt and type services.msc and click OK.
Under the Extended Tab, find this service:
Lavasoft Ad-Aware Service
Click once on the service to highlight it.
Right-Click on the service. Click on Properties
Select the General tab.
Next to Service Status, click Stop.
Click the Arrow-down tab on the right-hand side of the Start-up Type box.
From the drop-down menu, click on Disabled
Click Apply , then OK
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove Registry items with HighjackThis. Start HijackThis.
Click Do System Scan Only. When the Scan is complete, Check the following entries:
(Some of these lines may be missing)

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [ridoyowiyi] Rundll32.exe "C:\ProgramData\jarugimo\jarugimo.dll",s

Make sure Every other window except HJT is closed (No other tabs showing in the bottom tray), and Click Fix Checked
Click the "X" in the upper right corner of the HiJackThis window to close it.
-----------------------------------------------------------
REBOOT Your Machine
-----------------------------------------------
Run exeHelper
Please download exeHelper and save to your desktop.
Double-click on exeHelper.com to run the program.
A black window should pop up. Wait for the fix sequence to be completed, then press any key to close the window.
Post the contents of log.txt (Will be created in the same place as exeHelper.com)
Note: If the window shows a message that says "Error deleting file", please re-run the program before posting a log - it will then have written two logs into the same file).

Please Note Our Policy on the Use of P2P (Person to Person / Peer to Peer) file sharing programs
It is posted here: http://malwareremoval.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=33112
As a condition of receiving our help, I have included the P2P program BitTorrent DNA in the removal instructions below, so we are not wasting our time.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove Programs Using Control Panel
From Start, Settings, Control Panel or Start, Control Panel, click Add/Remove Programs.
Highlight each Entry, as follows, one by one, if it exists, and choose Remove :

HiJackThis
<== yours is too old
Adobe Reader 8
DNA
BitTorrent DNA

Take extra care in answering questions posed by any Uninstaller.
-----------------------------------------------------------
REBOOT Your Machine
-----------------------------------------------
Download HJTInstall.exe and save to your Desktop.
  • Doubleclick HJTInstall.exe to install it.
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
  • Click on Install.
  • It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
  • Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and a text log file will open in notepad.
  • Make sure Notepad's Format Menu has Word Wrap Unchecked.
  • Copy/Paste the entire log to your next reply please.
  • No matter what it says in the QuickStart Guide or elsewhere, DON'T USE the "ANALYZE THIS" button.
Its Findings can be Dangerous for your machine.
  • Please Don't have Hijackthis fix anything yet.
Most of what it is in the log are legitimate entries, necessary for the operation of your computer.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Retrieve the List of Installed programs Using HJT
Open HijackThis if it's not already running, click Open The Misc Tools Section. Then scroll down the list if you need to, click Open Uninstall Manager and Save List...
The List of installed programs will automatically be saved as uninstall_list.txt in your HiJackThis folder.
In addition, the list opens in Notepad so you can also save as another name in another location if you wish.
Please paste the contents into your next reply.

Please post the contents of exehelper's log.txt from your desktop, the fresh HijackThis log, amd the Installed programs list from HiJackThis. Use separate posts for each if it's more convenient.

Thank you for the response. If I need to do a wipe and reinstall. Fine. I was thinking of upgrading to Windows 7 anyway and I have the resources to back up my files if needed.

I completed all steps and dere are the logs you requested.

Thanks for the help.

Make sure Every other window except HJT is closed (No other tabs showing in the bottom tray), and Click Fix Checked
Click the "X" in the upper right corner of the HiJackThis window to close it.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Run a File Search
Press Start->Run, copy/paste the following command into the box and press OK:
cmd /c dir C:\*.* /L /A /B /S|Find ""zelijudo.dll" >> "%userprofile%\desktop\look.txt"

A blank command window will open on your desktop, then close in a minute or two. This is normal.
A file called look.txt should appear on your Desktop. Please post the contents of this file.
-----------------------------------------------------------
File Deletion
In Windows Explorer (My Computer), navigate to the folder(s) shown below, select View, Details, highlight each listed file or folder, one at a time, and press Delete. Be careful not to delete any file without double-checking the exact spelling of the filename.
You may have to give extra permissions to view the files
C:\Windows\9129837.exe <-- this file
C:\ProgramData\jarugimo\ <-- this folder
If you have any problem deleting a file, right click the file and choose Properties to see if it's read-only. Uncheck the read-only box, click Apply and OK. Then retry Delete.
If a message pops up saying "File in use", or something like that, hit Ctrl-Alt-Delete and look under the Processes tab. If the exact filename is in there, highlight it and click End Process, then retry Delete.
Please Note the name and location of any item you cannot delete or find.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove Programs Using Control Panel(Vista)
From Start, Control Panel, click on Uninstall a program under the Programs heading.
Right click each Entry, as follows, one by one, if it exists, choose Uninstall/Change, and give permission to Continue:

--------------------------------------------------------
You should Download and Install the newest version of Adobe Reader for reading pdf files, due to the vulnerabilities in earlier versions of Reader and Acrobat.
All versions numbered lower than 9.2 are vulnerable.
  • Go HERE and click on AdbeRdr920_en_US.exe to download the latest version of Adobe Reader.
  • Save this file to your desktop and run it to install the latest version of Adobe Reader.

You can keep your full version Acrobat 7, but you should not open PDF files from the Internet with it, since it is vulnerable to malicious infections.
Use the newest version of Reader for that, and retain the Acrobat 7 in your Programs for creation and editing of PDFs offline.
------------------------------------------------------------
Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment here : http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp, and install it to your computer.
Scroll down - It is currently the 5th item on the page (the page changes often), called JRE 6 Update 16
Select Windows and multi-language, and check to agree to the license.
Choose Windows Offline installation version.
Download it, choose Save, and save it to your desktop.
Then doubleclick it, and it will install the newest version of Java for you to use.
You can then remove the Installer from your desktop.
-----------------------------------------------------------
REBOOT Your Machine
-----------------------------------------------------------
Post a New HiJackThis Log
Start HijackThis
Click Do System Scan and Save a Log File.
When the Scan is complete, select the whole log (Ctrl-A), copy and paste the log contents in a reply.

So I will be looking for a fresh HiJackThis log, the contents of "look.txt", and any comments on how it's running, and/or any difficulties encountered.

Re: Popups and Symantec "required reboot" every 5 minutes

Unread postby daray » November 1st, 2009, 4:55 pm

Thanks again for your help. A few problems this time around:

I tried to find zelijudo.dll as instructed but no "look.txt" file popped up. Not sure why. Tried before and after reboot. Command window flashes only briefly and then closes. I did do a standard search and find two instances:

C:\ProgramData\zelijudo\zelijudo.dll
C:\Users\All Users\zelijudo

Couldn't locate C:\Windows\9129837.exe

Only one instance of Ad-Aware in Uninstall programs.

In general, the machine is running better. No popups since completing the tasks in your first reply.

daray,
Good.
If you haven't already done so, I would delete these:
C:\ProgramData\zelijudo\zelijudo.dll
C:\Users\All Users\zelijudo
The second has no file extension, so it may be a folder.
I would also go into C:\Windows\, click View, details, and ignore all the yellow folders. Look for any file with a name 5-10 characters long that is ALL numerals and has a file extension of .exe
If you find any, right click and choose delete.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Download and Run MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware
Please go here to the Download Location, click on Download.
  • After clicking on the download and choosing Save, the "Save to location" dialog will come up.
  • Choose Desktop as the location to save the installer and click Save again.
  • You should now have a desktop icon named mbam-setup.exe. Double-click it.
  • Let it install the program where it wants to, with the default settings, and click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • If necessary, start Malwarebytes Anti-Malware again.
  • Once the program is running, select Perform Quick Scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • If it found any malware items. Check all items except items in the C:\System Volume Information folder... and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location, and post the contents in your reply.
  • The log can also be found using the "Logs" tab in the program. You can click any log listed to open its contents.
  • Recent logs are named by time/date stamp in this format : mbam-log-2009-mm-dd(hour-min-sec).txt
  • You can now delete the installer icon, named mbam-setup.exe from your desktop.

I found a few folders that were reminiscent of zelijudo in the Program Data folder and deleted them. Some of these were found as part of the MalwareBytes scan.

Here is the logfile you asked for:

daray,
Let's do one more check to be sure we got it all.
--------------------------------------------------
TEMPORARILY DISABLE NORTON ANTIVIRUS
Please navigate to the system tray on the bottom right hand corner and look for a Imagesign.
  • right-click it -> choose "Disable Auto-Protect."
  • select a duration of 5 hours (this assures no interference with the cleanup of your pc)
  • click "Ok."
  • a popup will warn that protection will now be disabled and the sign will now look like this:
Norton Antivirus Guard is now disabled.
--------------------------------------------------
Please do a scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner
Note: If you are using Windows Vista, open your browser by right-clicking on its icon and select 'Run as administrator' to perform this scan.
Click on the Accept button and install any components it needs.
* The program will install and then begin downloading the latest definition files.
* After the files have been downloaded on the left side of the page in the Scan section select My Computer
* This will start the program and scan your system.
* The scan will take a while, so be patient and let it run.
* Once the scan is complete, click on View scan report
* Now, click on the Save Report as button.
* Save the file to your desktop.
* Copy and paste that information in your next post.

Graphics tutorial available here if needed:
http://i275.photobucket.com/albums/jj285/Bleeping/KAS/KAS9.gif

Once you successfully finish the scan, you can re-enable Norton's Auto-Protect.

Looks good.

You should delete this folder:
C:\Users\David\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles\8ujnwqzo.default\

I would suggest using the paid version of Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. It's worth the small lifetime price.
I believe you are good to go.

Thanks but I'm not sure why you are suggesting that I delete the folder you mentioned. That is the data storage folder for my e-mail client, Thunderbird. I'm pretty sure that if I delete it, all of my e-mail will go away.

Sorry. My mistake. The folder looked like a fake folder name made up by malware. Have not seen a thunderbird name like that, but I haven't used it in a while. What you can do is run a full scan with your own Antivirus to cover everything in that folder and have it remove anything suspicious.
If you don't want the antivirus to make the judgment, you can type the full pathname of any suspicious file to Jotti here and get a report back from over 20 different Antivirus scanners: http://virusscan.jotti.org/
