Hi,

I was able to run ERUNT with no issues, but when I tried to run OTM it seemed to execute some of the commands, but then went 'not responding' for 15-20 minutes. I was unable to copy anything in the window and had to reboot using ctrl/alt/delete.

Hi Stu,

I'm sorry you had problems with the OTM process. Let's see if there were any "results" cataloged, the OTM process should have created a log file.

Please do not run any "fix" programs and/or remove any files unless instructed to do so, by me. I need to see what's present in order to properly
diagnose the problem(s) and recommend corrective actions. Thanks.

Please read these instructions carefully before executing and then perform the steps, in the order given.
lf, you have any questions about or problems with, executing these instructions, <STOP> do not proceed, post back with the question or problem.

Please print these instructions... you will not have browser / Intrernet access, during some of these steps! .

Step 1.

  1. A log (text) file should have been created in "C:\_OTM\MovedFiles\mmddyyyy_hhmmss.log"
  2. Open the above log file in Notepad...

If OTM did not create a log file or you can not find it... please let me know and continue with the rest of the instructions.

No problems at all.

No log file was in the OTM folder, just a chain of folders.

Java update was no problem.

Unread postby Wingman » October 18th, 2009, 5:41 pm

Hi Stu,

I see that Viewpoint is installed. Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player are Viewpoint components which are installed as a side effect of installing other software, most notably AOL and AOL Instant Messenger (AIM). Viewpoint Manager is responsible for managing and updating Viewpoint Media Player’s components.
You can disable this using the Viewpoint Manager Control Panel found in the Windows Control Panel menu. By selecting Disable auto‑updating for the Viewpoint Manager ‑‑ the player will no longer attempt to check for updates. Anything that is installed without your consent is suspect. Read what Viewpoint says and make your own decision.
To provide a satisfying consumer experience and to operate effectively, the Viewpoint Media Player periodically sends information to servers at Viewpoint. Each installation of the Viewpoint Media Player is identifiable to Viewpoint via a Customer Unique Identifier (CUID), an alphanumeric identifier embedded in the Viewpoint Media Player. The Viewpoint Media Player randomly generates the CUID during installation and uses it to indicate a unique installation of the product. A CUID is never connected to a user's name, email address, or other personal contact information. CUIDs are used for the sole purpose of filtering redundant information. Each of these information exchanges occurs anonymously.

Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without user's approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This may change, read Viewpoint to Plunge Into Adware. I recommend that you remove the Viewpoint products; however, decide for yourself.
If you want to remove Viewpoint and the associated entries... please proceed with the steps below.
If you DO NOT want to remove these components STOP do not proceed, post back and let me know.

Please do not run any "fix" programs and/or remove any files unless instructed to do so, by me. I need to see what's present in order to properly
diagnose the problem(s) and recommend corrective actions. Thanks.

Hi,

When I tried to enter Task Manager using CTRL/ALT/DEL my computer slowed to a crawl, it was unusable. Also, instead of seeing the options you mentioned, all I got was the Task Manger icon in the Taskbar. I had to do a hard re-boot just to be able to type this message to you. I have not tried anything else pending your advice.

So, I got Task Manager to open (after 2 or 3 tries) and was able to stop the process, but when I tried to remove the first Viewpoint program it tells me I must log in as administrator even though I am the only user of this computer and I checked that I am listed as an administrator account.

Hi Stu,

Sorry you're having difficulties executing the instructions. Thanks for keeping me informed. :) Let's hold off on the previous instructions and see if we can find out why you have "administrator" issues.

Please do not run any "fix" programs and/or remove any files unless instructed to do so, by me. I need to see what's present in order to properly diagnose the problem(s) and recommend corrective actions. Thanks.

Please read these instructions carefully before executing and then perform the steps, in the order given.
lf, you have any questions about or problems with, executing these instructions, <STOP> do not proceed, post back with the question or problem.

Step 1.
Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
Please save any items you were working on... close any open programs. You may be asked to reboot your machine.
Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop. If needed...Tutorial w/screenshots
Alternate download sites available here or here.
  1. Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  2. Right-click on mbam-setup.exe... select "Run As Administrator" to install the application.
  3. When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  4. When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Then click Finish.
MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.
    • If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself.
    • Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
    • Problems downloading the updates? Manually download them from here and double-click on "mbam-rules.exe" to install.
On the Scanner tab:
  1. Make sure the "Perform Full Scan" option is selected.
  2. Then click on the Scan button.
  3. If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  4. The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  5. When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  6. Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
Back at the main Scanner screen:
  1. Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  2. Check all items except items in the C:\System Volume Information folder... then click on Remove Selected.
We will take care of the System Volume Information items later.
  3. When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below)
  4. The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
The log can also be found here:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Users\All Users\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs
  5. Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts.
Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process.
If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Step 2.
Please include in your next reply:
  1. Any problem executing the instructions?
  2. MBAM scan results.
  3. How is the computer behaving?
Thanks,
Wingman

  2. Unzip the program and all of the contents of ViewpointKiller.zip to a location such as your desktop.
  3. Double click the ViewpointKiller icon to run ViewpointKiller.exe.
VISTA users, you will need to right-click on ViewpointKiller.exe, selecting "Run As Administrator", to execute.
  4. Select the File menu, and select Viewpoint Installed? to see if you have Viewpoint installed.
  5. If ViewpointKiller indicates that any of the Viewpoint variants are installed, select the proper Kill option in the File menu.
  6. Follow the prompts and instructions very carefully, answering Yes or No depending on which option you are most comfortable with.
  7. When ViewpointKiller is finished, Notepad will open with a file called "ViewpointKiller.log"
  8. Note: When done with ViewpointKiller, right click and delete all files that were unzipped.
  9. Please copy and paste the contents of ViewpointKiller.log in your next reply.

Step 2.
RSIT (Random's System Information Tool)
You should still have this program on your desktop. If so, just ignore the download instructions.
Please download RSIT by random/random... save it to your desktop.

In order for both info and log files to be produced again, I need you to delete the existing RSIT folder:
  1. C:\RSIT <-- delete this entire folder , then...
  2. Right click on RSIT.exe and select "Run As Administrator" to run it. If Windows UAC prompts you, please allow it.
  3. Please read the disclaimer... click on Continue.
RSIT will start running. When done... 2 (Notepad) text files...will be produced.
The first one, "log.txt", <<will be maximized... the second one, "info.txt", <<will be minimized.
  4. Please post both... "log.txt" and "info.txt", file contents in your next reply.
(These logs can be lengthy, so post 1 log per reply please.)

Step 3.
Please include in your next reply:
  1. Any problem executing the instructions?
  2. ViewpointKiller log file contents.
  3. RSIT log.txt and info.txt file contents.
  4. How is the computer behaving?
Thanks,

Re: Help Please

Unread postby Wingman » October 23rd, 2009, 2:34 pm

Hello Stu,
Thanks for the quick response. :)

Step 1.
ERUNT - Emergency Recovery Utility NT
Modifying the Registry can create unforeseen problems, so it's always wise to create a backup before doing so.
Run:
  1. Please navigate to Start >> All Programs >> ERUNT.
  2. Click on OK within the pop-up menu.
  3. In the next menu under C:\WINDOWS\ERDNT\DD-MM-YYYY under Backup options make sure both the following are selected:
    • System registry.
    • Current user registry.
  4. Next click on "OK"... at the prompt... reply "Yes".
After a short duration the Registry backup is complete! pop-up message will appear.
  5. Now click on "OK". A registry backup has now been created.
< STOP > If you did not successfully complete this step. < STOP > Do not continue with any other steps, post back and let me know!

Step 2.
Create a Registry 'merge' file
  1. Open Notepad
  2. Copy/Paste the 'entire' contents... in the code box below...to Notepad.
    Code: Select all
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\{A7327C09-B521-4EDB-8509-7D2660C9EC98}]

    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\startupreg\SunJavaUpdateSched]

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\URLSearchHooks]
    "*{CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497}"=-

    [-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\*{CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497}]

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\URLSearchHooks]
    "{CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497}"=""

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497}]
    @="Microsoft Url Search Hook"

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497}\InProcServer32]
    @="C:\\WINDOWS\\system32\\ieframe.dll"
    "ThreadingModel"="Apartment"

  3. Save the file ...Name:"fix.reg"...File Type as: "All files" (*.*) ...to you desktop
    Image
fix.reg <<------------- you should see this on your desktop.
  4. Go to Desktop, right click fix.reg icon, select "Run As Administrator". If Vista UAC prompts... Please allow it.
  5. Reply Yes...to the merge prompt... to enter this data with your registry.

Step 3.
Delete Multiple Folders
We need to delete some folders.
It will be easier and less error prone, if we create a batch file to do this... please follow these steps:
  1. Copy all text in the quote box (below)...to Notepad.
    @echo off
REM: Remove Directory and all sub-directories and files
    rd /s /q "C:\Program Files\Viewpoint"
    rd /s /q "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Viewpoint"
    rd /s /q "C:\Program Files\DAEMON Tools Toolbar"
    rd /s /q "C:\ProgramData\Application Data\Viewpoint"
    rd /s /q "C:\ProgramData\WINDOWS\Application Data\Viewpoint."
    rd /s /q "C:\Users\Island Park Esso\Local Settings\Application Data\Viewpoint"
    del %0
  2. Save the Notepad file on your desktop...as delfile.bat... save type as "All Files"
    Image
delfile.bat <<------------- you should see this on your desktop.
  3. Right-click on delfile.bat, select "Run As Administrator" to execute it.
A black CMD window will flash, then disappear...this is normal.
  4. The folders, if found...will have been deleted and the "delfile.bat" file will also be deleted.

Step 4.

Step 5.
Please include in your next reply:
  1. Any problem executing the instructions?
  2. Folder deletions...any problems?
  3. New RSIT log.txt and info.txt file contents.
  4. How is the computer behaving?
Thanks,

Hello Stu,
I apologize for the delay getting back to you.

I have altered the Registry "merge" file step instructions, hopefully this will be more successful getting the registry file data into your registry.
If you still encounter problems, stop and post back, as you have done in the past.

Step 1.
ERUNT - Emergency Recovery Utility NT
Please run this again, as changes may have occurred between the last run and now. Better safe than sorry.

You must be using an account with Administrator privileges, to perform this step!
  1. Open Notepad
  2. Copy/Paste the 'entire' contents... in the code box below...to Notepad.

    [-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\startupreg\SunJavaUpdateSched]

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\URLSearchHooks]
    "*{CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497}"=-

    [-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\*{CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497}]

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\URLSearchHooks]
    "{CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497}"=""

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497}]
    @="Microsoft Url Search Hook"

You should see regedit.exe in the list.
  5. Right-click on the "regedit.exe" file, and choose to "Run As Administrator". If prompted by UAC, please allow.
  6. Once in Regedit, select File from the Command line and choose Import .
