If you still need help do the following:

_____________________________________________
  • Download Random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of log.txt

This log will also produce a Hijackthis log so NO reason to post one of those.

Answer these questions.

I'm pretty sure that file you uploaded to Jottis is part of a keylogger.
Did you install one ?

Just a word of caution or FYI if you prefer.
The next time you play around with key-loggers it would be important to write down all the info that comes with them. They don't uninstall that easy and some require codes to uninstall. Part of their protection.

I imagine you don't need this key-logger any longer seeings you can't remember if you uninstalled it or not.
So we will attempt get rid of it manually if we can't figure out which one it is.

The easy way
Can you remember the name of the Key logger you installed ? If so we can uninstall it the easy way.

RUN HJT

HJT
Run hijackthis and choose scan only and place a check by the following lines if present.
Close all other windows and browsers except HJT before clicking on Fix Checked

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [potpa] C:\Program Files\KL\dqnrrrgmya.exe dq

Close that.

Reconfigure Windows XP to show hidden files::

Click Start. My Computer.
Select the Tools menu Folder Options. Select the View Tab.
Under the Hidden files and folders heading select "Show hidden files and folders".
Uncheck the "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" option.
Uncheck the "Hide file extensions for known file types" option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.

____________________________
The other way .
Navigate to this folder. c:/Progam files/KL
Write down the names of the files you see in there for me.
Post those back. That may help me determine what key-logger you have
and how to best remove it. If it is in fact part of a key-logger you installed.
Do not double click any to try and open them.

OK.. If you want to get rid of this do the following.

___________________________________
You may want to print these out or save them as a text document on your desktop as we will be going into safe mode and this page (internet ) will not be available.

________________________
Safe mode:
Please reboot to safe mode:
After the very first black screen start tapping the
F8 key until prompted with a list.... choose safe
mode.

______________________________
RUN HJT

HJT
Run hijackthis and choose scan only and place a check by the following lines if present.
Close all other windows and browsers except HJT before clicking on Fix Checked

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [potpa] C:\Program Files\KL\dqnrrrgmya.exe dq

Close that.

Search for and remove
Now I want you to search for and delete the following and folder and all it's contents . If you need help finding them.
Click start /search/ all files and folders/ look for More advanced options. once in there select the first 3 boxes.
Please just remove the files/folders I listed in BOLD

C:\Program Files\KL

__________________________________
Reboot to normal mode.

You may see an error or 2 because we have partially removed this program. Write down any errors you see exactly so we can take care of those.

______________________________
Make a new folder on your desktop. Call it reg Scan

Download Reg Scan
Extract the files to that folder on the desktop you just created..
Go into that folder and double click RegScan.vbs.
If any of your software gives you a warning about running this just allow it. It's safe.
Type in dqnrrrgmya.exe into the text field that appears and hit enter.
Again... Some protection software may probably flag the script...
just let it run.
It will let you know when its done and a log should pop up ..If it doesn't there will be a file in the folder called results.txt

Post that for me.

_________________________
In your next reply I would like to see:
  • A new HJT log
  • The report from reg scan
  • Let me know how you made out with deleting that folder.

Had no problems deleting that folder, seemed fine! I no longer get a trojan virus alert popping up on startup/at all now.

I'm going on vacation/holiday tomorrow for 10 days and will not have this laptop with me or probably much internet access. Is it possible to keep this thread open past the 3 day limit? I may not even have time to check your reply before I leave as it is late at night now and my flight is early in the morning. hopefully we can work something out!

thanks so far for your help!

Things seem to be a little slow still, the virtual memory gets clogged up fairly easily.

Also just got a new AVG THREAT DETECTED pop up...

File name: c:\system volume information\_restore{9DAE3A8F-692A-4866-BA5B-85B9EC93A40F}\RP189\A0088512.dll

Name: Trojan Horse PSW.Generic6.AZKA
Detected on Open.

I just connected my external HD to use... could there be something dodgy on the HD? I use the HD purely for backing up audio/video etc.

A sure sign of cracked software. What did you expect while downloading stuff like this? Your sure to get infections each and every time.
Here is our view and policy on cracked software.
I suggest you read that and remove it all from the machine. If it shows up in another scan I will have to have this topic closed.
