Hi Poki

With reference to Malware Removal's P2P Programs Policy, The following program will have to be removed:

uTorrent

Move HijackThis
You currently are running HijackThis from here: C:\Downloads\Software\HiJackThis.exe
  • In "My Documents" , right click an empty space and choose New > Folder
  • Rename the folder HJT
  • Copy and paste HijackThis.exe into the HJT folder.
  • Delete the original Hijackthis.exe found in C:\Downloads\Software\HiJackThis.exe
This is because HijackThis creates back-ups of things you fix and needs to be in it's own folder for this reason.

Check a file
  • Go to VirusTotal or Jotti's
  • Copy/Paste the file in the quote box below into the white Upload a file box.
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\8A4593\CD5017.EXE
  • Click Send/Submit, and the file will upload to VirusTotal/Jotti, where it will be scanned by several anti-virus programmes.
  • After a while, a window will open, with details of what the scans found.
  • Copy and paste the results into your next reply.

    random's system information tool (RSIT)

    • Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from HERE and save it to your desktop.
    • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
    • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
    • Once it has finished, two logs will open:
      • log.txt (<<will be maximized)
      • info.txt (<<will be minimized)
    • Post both of these logs in your next reply (Sometimes you have to make several post to get the logs posted.)

    In your next reply:
    1. log.txt
    2. info.txt
    3. VirusTotal/jotti Results

As for the file you asked me to check using VirusTotal or Jotti, it doesn't exist.

--->Since I posted the original HJT log, I ran Piriform's CCleaner, both the cleaner and the registry tools, (because I was trying to free up some space on my drive) so maybe that file was deleted as a result of that process.

Also, I have a new problem: when I open 'My Documents', I get an error window: "Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." I ran into this while trying to make the folder for HJT.

Eventually, after a restart, I was able to make the new folder, and move the file, but it continues to happen. When I click for more information, it reads "Error signature - AppName: explorer.exe AppVer: 6.0.2900.2180 ModName: mpegsplitter.ax ModVer: 1.0.0.4 Offset: 0002456b"
(I find this strange because I don't have any media programs open at the time, so I don't know why any application dealing with mpeg's is involved at all.)

That's what I've got for now. Thanks.

Hi Poki

Your computer has multiple infections, including a backdoor. A backdoor gives intruders complete control of your computer, logs your keystrokes, steal personal information, etc.

Microsoft Win32/IRCBot

This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and Download and Execute files

I would advise you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the Trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of Trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?

When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

I can attempt to clean this machine but I can't guarantee that it will be at all secure afterwards.

Should you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

Please let us know what you have decided to do in your next post.

Hi melboy,

First of all, thanks for your help and advice. I do appreciate it.

I am considering a windows re-install, but I'm not sure: I bought the computer (a dell laptop) in 2006, and have since joined the Peace Corps, and I live in a developing country with slow internet access, and I no longer have the windows setup CD. I could get access to an (illegal) copy of a windows install CD, but I'm a little worried that when I connect to the internet, either the activation will fail and it will stop working, or some other similar problem. Do you know of any way that I could re-install with my legally purchased and licensed copy of Windows, without the CD and key code?

Another thought I had is that I have a copy of Ubuntu that I could install instead, but it's awfully annoying to not have MS Office programs, since that's what everyone else uses, and it's what I use on every other computer I use, so converting back and forth all the time would be a real hassle.

Another point is that I actually don't have any terribly important or sensitive information on the computer, so maybe the risk is relatively reasonable (I read the "When should I reformat?" that you linked to). Mostly I'd just like to have my computer functioning correctly the way it was before - I like to use Task Manager to 'manage' what's going on with my computer, and I like using the command prompt to go through and try to delete the viruses that pop up (like RECYCLER) when I use my USB flash drives.

Here's a question - if we remove all the malware, but there's still possibly a backdoor issue, would it be safe, for example, to access my bank account through their https server? I feel quite sure that there's no kind of targeted attack (keystroke loggers or anything like that) directed toward me.

Also, I wonder if you can help me understand why my anti-virus software didn't prevent these problems? I'm using AVG free, and it updates and scans daily automatically. Is there a different AV program that I could get for free that's better, OR, which one do you recommend that I pay for?

Thanks again for all your help. As a result of this experience, I am considering applying to MWR University - maybe after I get back to the States after Peace Corps... if I feel like I have the proper amount of time to dedicate to it. It would be good to have a better understanding of all of these issues, and be able to give back to the internet community by providing the service, too. anyway - sorry for rambling.

Peace,
-Poki

Hi Poki.

Are you in Tonga?

Do you know of any way that I could re-install with my legally purchased and licensed copy of Windows, without the CD and key code?
Dell provide ways to do this either through contacting technical support for replacement disks or restoring the laptop to it's original factory settings, details of which can be found here. Should your COA sticker not be present on your laptop, there are programs to retrieve your license key such as this.

No, as I said I can attempt to clean this machine but I can't guarantee that it will be at all secure afterwards. If the machine is used for Internet banking I would strongly advise a format and re-install of the OS or restore to factory settings.

Also, I wonder if you can help me understand why my anti-virus software didn't prevent these problems?
I can give you advice on how to further secure your PC once you have made a firm decision on whether or not to re-format. Again, I would stress if the machine is used for Internet banking I would strongly advise a format and re-install of the OS or restore to factory settings.

Hi melboy,

Sorry for my lack of communication... I've been struggling with making the decision about what to do, and I was away for a day, and other things...

Anyway, I have decided that the ideal resolution for me would be to use the Dell Restore function. That way, I would still have the legal version of windows, as well as MS Office that came installed on the laptop when I purchased it, isn't that correct?

I would greatly appreciate your continued support and advice for this.

Right now, the laptop is not connected to the internet - I am using a different computer. My plan is to copy all the files that I want to save to an external hard drive, and then I'll be ready to proceed.

Please let me know if you have any advice or requirements of me at this time, and I'll get back to you soon, when I am ready.

Thanks very much,

-Poki

p.s. Yes, I am stationed in Tonga, in the South Pacific. :)

Hi Poki

As this is a site dedicated to malware removal I can suggest ways to secure your PC but any other questions you have regarding restoring your dell laptop would be better posed to their Technical support or asked at their support forums.
http://en.community.dell.com/forums/3524.aspx

Upon restoring your PC to factory settings I would install an Anti-Virus (AV), removing any trial versions that came pre-installed if you do not intend to use that particular one. It might be an idea to copy the installer file for a replacement AV to external storage media (CD/USB memory stick) using a clean PC, to install before connecting to the internet. Upon connecting to the internet, update the AV and go straight to windows updates and install all necessary updates.

As you are infected with a worm that spreads via removable drives it would be recommended to re-format them also.

General Security and Computer Health
Below are some steps to follow in order to dramatically lower the chances of reinfection.

  • Make sure that you keep your antivirus updated
New viruses come out every minute, so it is essential that you have the latest signatures for your antivirus program to provide you with the best possible protection from malicious software.
    Suggestions:
    1) Antivir PersonalEdition Classic - Free anti-virus software for Windows. Detects and removes more than 50,000 viruses. Free support.
    2) avast! 4 Home Edition - Anti-virus program for Windows. The home edition is freeware for non-commercial users.
    3) AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition - Free edition of the AVG anti-virus program for Windows.
Note:It is strongly recommended that you run only one antivirus program at a time. Having more than one antivirus program active in memory uses additional resources and can result in program conflicts, system instability and false virus alerts.
Uninstall Tools for Major Antivirus Products
  • Security Updates for Windows, Internet Explorer & Microsoft Office
Whenever a security problem in its software is found, Microsoft will usually create a patch so that after the patch is installed, attackers can't use the vulnerability to install malicious software on your PC. Keeping up with these patches will help to prevent malicious software being installed on your PC. Ensure you are registered for Windows updates via Start > right-click on My Computer > Properties > Automatic Updates tab or visit the Microsoft Update site on a regular basis.
Note: The update process uses ActiveX, so you will need to use internet explorer for it and allow the ActiveX control to install.
  • Update Non-Microsoft Programs
Microsoft isn't the only company whose products can contain security vulnerabilities. To check whether other programs running on your PC are in need of an update, you can use the Secunia Software Inspector - I suggest that you run it at least once a month.
  • Make Internet Explorer More Secure
Internet Explorer 8 <<< Recommended Version
For older versions please read and follow the recommendations at this site
    Internet Explorer7
    Internet Explorer6

Recommended Programs

I would recommend the download and installation of some or all of the following programs (if not already present), and the updating of them on a regular basis.

  • WinPatrol
As a robust security monitor, WinPatrol will alert you to hijackings, malware attacks and critical changes made to your computer without your permission. WinPatrol takes snapshot of your critical system resources and alerts you to any changes that may occur without your knowledge. For more information, please visit HERE.
  • SpywareBlaster
SpywareBlaster sets killbits in the registry to prevent known malicious ActiveX controls from installing on your computer. If you don't know what ActiveX controls are, see HERE. You can download SpywareBlaster from HERE.
  • Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware is an anti-malware application that can thoroughly remove even the most advanced malware. It includes a number of features, including a built in protection monitor that blocks malicious processes before they even start. You can download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from HERE. You can find a tutorial HERE.
  • Hosts File
For added protection you may also like to add a host file. A simple explanation of what a Hosts file does is HERE and for more information regarding host files read HERE.
  • Use an alternative Internet Browser
Many of the exploits are directed to users of Internet Explorer. Try using a different browser instead:
    Firefox
    Opera
  • Install and use a firewall with outbound protection
The Windows firewall only monitors incoming traffic, NOT outgoing. Using a software firewall in its default configuration to replace the Windows firewall greatly reduces the risk of your computer being hacked. Make sure your firewall is always enabled while your computer is connected to the internet.
Note: You should only have one firewall installed at a time. Having more than one firewall installed at once is likely to cause conflicts and may well decrease your overall protection as well as seriously impairing the performance of your PC.
    Suggestions:

[Please note that trial pay is not needed to get any product for free.]

Finally I am trying to make one point very clear. It is absolutely essential to keep all of your security programs up to date.

Also please read this great article by Tony Klein So How Did I Get Infected In First Place

I'd be grateful if you could reply to this post so that I know you have read it and, if you've no other questions, the thread can be closed.

Happy surfing and stay clean!

addressing the problem of USB memory stick worms...

Unread postby Poki » September 20th, 2009, 12:33 am

My computer was compromised by the presence of a worm that probably came from my USB flash drive, which I use all the time, in other peoples' computers, etc. These kind of problems seem to be common where I live (on an island in the South Pacific). The most common symptoms are folders being hidden, and .exe files with the folders' names being created (I guess to trick you into clicking it, and spreading the virus).

anyway, I came across Nick Brown's idea (http://nick.brown.free.fr/blog/2007/10/memory-stick-worms) to stop autorun from automatically spreading the virus. I'd like to get YOUR point of view on if you think this should work. And what other methods can I use to eliminate these viruses, or just stop from getting/spreading them.

thanks very much.

Hi Poki :)

I've asked Admin for this to be merged with your current topic, as I said "if you've no other questions, the thread can be closed"

Once you've Restored your PC to factory settings and formatted your removable drives, you can follow the instructions below to help safeguard against such infections. It would then be prudent to update your AV and use it's scan from the context menu (right-click the chosen drive), to scan the drive for malware when plugging it in to your PC.

Flash_Disinfector by sUBs
Please download Flash_Disinfector and save it to your desktop.

  • Double click to run it.
  • You will be prompted to plug in your flash drive. Plug it in.
  • Flash_Disinfector will start disinfecting your flash and hard drives. This takes a few seconds. Your desktop will disappear in the meantime.
  • When done, a message box will appear. Click OK. Your desktop should now appear. If it doesn't, press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
  • Click on File > New Task (Run...). Type in explorer.exe and press Enter. Your desktop should now appear.

You can run Flash Disinfector with other flash drives and/or other removable drives. This may include your Mobile phone, Digital camera etc...
Please do so and allow the utility to clean up those drives as well.
