can't download flashplayer

My computer is dragging and I can't download the most recent version of flashplayer. Everytime I click install. my pop-up comes up and tells me that the system is trying to download an add on (DLM). I click and it freezes the internet and nothing happens. No download. nothing. I also have a lot of processes running is there anything i can do about that.

Hi, sorry about the wait, please follow these instructions....

Start HijackThis.
Click Open the Misc Tools section
Please click on the Open Uninstall Manager button. In the "Add/Remove Programs Manager" section please click on Save list.... Choose somewhere like your desktop to save the file to, call it "uninstall_list.txt" in the File name box, then click Save. Now go to your desktop and double-click the file you just saved to open it in Notepad, press Ctrl-A to Select All followed by Ctrl-C to Copy the entire contents of the file to the Clipboard. Next reply to this post and click Ctrl-V to Paste the contents of the file into your reply.

Also can you please advise if you have the Windows Firewall turned on as I didn't notice any other software firewall running?

• Please download F-Secure Blacklight (fsbl.exe) from here
• Save into C:\ with a name of fsbl.exe
• Go to Start > Run
• Copy and paste the contents of the below codebox into the run box

• Click OK
• This will launch BlackLight
• Select I accept the agreement
• Click Next
• Click Scan
• Wait for the scan to finish
• Click on Next>

• A logfile will have been created in the C:\ drive
• It will be named fsbl-xxxxxxxxxxxxxx.log where xxxxxxxxxxxxxx is the date and time of the scan
• Use notepad to open that log

Hi, thanks, that's great. Please follow these instructions carefully. Ask if not sure about anything.....

Firstly I notice you have Teatimer running (the real-time protection part of Spybot), which is good. We need to temporarily disable this though in case it prevents us from making the necessary changes with HijackThis. Right click the running icon of Spybot's TeaTimer, and choose exit. You will need to re-enable it after we are finished.

I notice you also have Microsoft Defender running, which is good. We need to temporarily disable this though in case it prevents us from making the necessary changes with HijackThis. To disable Defender Real Time Protection:

• Open Windows Defender
• Click Tools
• Click General Settings
• Scroll down to Real Time Protection Options
• Uncheck Turn on Real Time Protection (recommended)
• Close Windows Defender

Once your log is clean you can re-enable Windows Defender Real Time Protection and Teatimer.

Stop Bad Processes

We need to stop the following processes from running:

NielsenOnline.exe
NielsenOnline.exe


Press Ctrl+Alt+Del, click on Task Manager then click on the Processes tab.
Click on the Image Name column heading to sort alphabetically.
For each of the processes above locate and click to highlight the name then click End Process.
Once done, close the Task Manager using the "X" in the top-right corner.

Open up Hijackthis.
Click on Do a system scan only.
Place a checkmark next to these lines(if still present).

Folder Deletion
In Windows Explorer (My Computer), navigate to the folder shown below, highlight the folder shown in red, if found, and press Delete.

C:\Program Files\NetRatingsNetSight\ <== this folder only

You may have to first open the folder, choose View, Details, and delete all the underlying files and folders before an entire folder can be deleted.
If you need to delete underlying files in a folder and are unable to do so:
Right click the file set for deletion, and check Properties to see if it's read-only. Uncheck the read-only box, click Apply and OK. Then retry Delete.
If a message pops up saying "File in use", or something like that,, note the name of the file, hit Ctrl-Alt-Delete and look under the Processes tab. If the exact filename is in there, highlight it and click End Process, then retry Delete.
Please Note the name and location of any item you cannot delete, or any item not found.

Post a New HJT Log
Reboot your computer. Start HijackThis. Click Do System Scan and Save a Log File.
When the Scan is complete, select the whole log (Ctrl-A), copy and paste the log contents in a reply.

Online Virus Scan


Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

1. Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
2. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
3. It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions.
4. When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
5. Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
   Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
   Archives and Mail bases
   
6. Click on My Computer under Scan.
7. Go and make a cup of tea, it could be some time
8. Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
9. You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
10. Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
11. Please post this log in your next reply (copy/paste).

The internet is still booting slowly. I think its because of all the processes that are running in the background. I have 58 processes running and I don't know which ones to get rid of or how to get rid of some of them. I still cannot download adobe flashplayer. It still freezes after a pop-up says that I need to add the DLM and I click the prompt to download the add on down load manager (DLM).

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update to the latest version...

Updating Java:

• Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 16.
• Scroll down to where it says
  Java SE Runtime Environment - JRE 6 Update 16.
  
• Click the
  Download
  button to the right.
• Select Windows on platform combobox and check the box that says:
  I agree to the License Agreement. Click continue.
  
• The page will refresh.
• Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
• Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
• Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
• Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
• Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
• Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
• Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
• Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u16-windows-i586.exe to install the newest version.

We now need to reset your Restore Points which may also have been infected.

Note: This will remove all previous Restore Points

***Turn off System Restore:

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Restart your computer.

***Turn System Restore back on.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Remove the Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Click Start.... My Computer, select the Tools menu and then Folder Options, after the new window appears select the View tab
This time select the: Restore Defaults
Select: Apply, and click OK


I will now give you a bit of prevention advice to make sure the system stays clean....

The Windows Firewall is not good enough to protect you. Here is a FREE FIREWALL http://download.zonelabs.com/bin/free/information/zap/releaseHistory.html , alternative here http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/download_firewall.html, take your pick. If you choose the Comodo option, during the setup process you should choose to Install the Firewall as a standalone ...when given the options.


It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date at Windows Update and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on.

Update Non-Microsoft Programs
Microsoft isn't the only company whose products can contain security vulnerabilities. To check whether other programs running on your PC are in need of an update, you can use the >Secunia Software Inspector< - I suggest that you run it at least once a month.


Now as your issue does not appear to be malware-related I am not qualified to advise further. I suggest you visit http://www.whatthetech.com and open a ticket there. They will help but make sure you advise them you have already been certified clean at MRU.
