SHUTDOWN PROBLEMS AND NORTON IDED ADWARE CANT REMOVE MANUALL

Unread postby mattman » January 10th, 2006, 11:56 pm

Have shutdown and hanging problems and hanging issues with outlook and adware(MXTarget and Betterinternet) that require manual removal. Other recommmended spyware removal tools have not worked, i.e SE Have tried to remove registry entries per Norton manual removal instructions but to no avail, and fear to attempt much else in regards to registry due to technical incompetence. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Hijack this log as follows. Thanks again in advance for any help

Hi mattman,

Welcome to the Malware Removal forums. I will be more than happy to help you work on your problems.
Please give me some time to review your log as this can be a lengthy process. As soon as a MR Staff Member reviews my fix, I will post it for you.
In the mean time, if any problems occur. Please let me know.
Please only use this topic to reply to. Do not start another thread.
The fixes we will use are specific to your problems and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
If you’re unsure of anything at all please stop and ask!

Hi mattman

I was unable to see references to MXTarget and Betterinternet in your log. You do have a couple others. I’ll have you run some scans to make sure nothing is hiding. We will clean what we can see.

Question. Did you intentionally install Spyware Cleaner? It is considered a "Spyware remover" of dubious repute – see SpywareWarrior for a list of Rogue/Suspect Anti-Spyware Products & Web Sites. Spyware Cleaner is about ¼ way down.
==========

Please print the instructions below or copy and paste to Notepad since you will not have internet access while in safe mode later in the fix.
==========

Download ewido Malware Remover from here

When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
When you run ewido for the first time, you may get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
From the main ewido screen, click on Update in the left menu, then click the Start update button.
After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
Do not run it yet.
==========

If you have not already installed Spybot S&D 1.4, Please download and install Spybot S&D,
Restart your computer now.
Make sure you update it, and then perform a full scan, make sure you delete every item found.
If you have already performed a full scan with these two programs, please tell me so.
==========

Download CWShredder
Save it to its own folder
Open CWShredder and click I AGREE
Click Check For Update
==========

Run an online virus scan called Kapersky from here.

1. Click on "Kapersky Online Scanner"
2. A new smaller window will pop up. Press on "Accept". After reading the contents.
3. Now Kapersky will update the anti-virus database. Let it run.
4. Click on "Next">"Scan Settings", and make sure the database is set to "extended". And check both the scan options. Then click OK.
5. Then click on "My Computer". And the scan will start.
6. Once finished, save a log as ".txt" to the desktop. And restart.
==========

Now, enable the Show Hidden Folders option, like this:
Click Start.
Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK.
==========

We need to disable your Microsoft AntiSpyware Real-time Protection and WinPatrol as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make.

Open Microsoft AntiSpyware.
Click on Tools, Settings.
In the left pane, click on Real-time Protection.
Under Startup Options uncheck Enable the Microsoft AntiSpyware Security Agents on startup (recommended).
Under Real-time spyware threat protection uncheck Enable real-time spyware threat protection (recommended).
After you uncheck these, click on the Save button and close Microsoft AntiSpyware.
Right click on the Microsoft AntiSpyware icon on the taskbar and select Shutdown Microsoft AntiSpyware.

After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.
==========

Disable WinPatrol
- Right Click the 'Scotty Dog ' icon in the system tray
- Click Always Run Winpatrol
- When WinPatrol dialog comes up asking about Startup change, click Yes
- Reboot your machine for the changes to take effect before running HJT.
==========

Please go to:
Start
Control panel
Add/Remove programs

Find and remove these programs (if they are present)

Spyware Cleaner <<<<Optional

(If some programs listed are not present, please do not panic)
=========

Now reboot your computer
As soon as it starts to boot, rapidly press the f8 key.
Select Safe Mode from the menu
If you are still unsure, see here
==========

Then run cwshredder that you downloaded earlier. Hit 'fix' as opposed to 'scan only'. Let it delete all it finds.
==========

Run HijackThis as you did to generate a log, but this time click on 'Do a system scan only'.
Place a checkmark in the boxes to the left of the following entries, by clicking on them:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FDD3B846-8D59-4ffb-8758-209B6AD74ACC} - (no file)

O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {2CDE1A7D-A478-4291-BF31-E1B4C16F92EB} - (no file)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AlcxMonitor] ALCXMNTR.EXE
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Spyware Cleaner] "C:\Program Files\Spyware Cleaner\SpywareCleaner.Exe" /boot

O15 - Trusted Zone: *.vladzone.com

CLOSE ALL OPEN WINDOWS AND BROWSERS - EXCEPT HJT and click on Fix checked
==========

Using Windows Explore by right-clicking the Start button and left clicking. Explore navigate to and find the following folders: if found, delete the following folders (some may not be present after previous steps):

C:\Program Files\Spyware Cleaner

Now we need to do a search. Start | Search | For Files and Folders.
Expand Search Options, check Advanced Options, check Search system folders, Search hidden files and folders, and Search Subfolders.
Paste this into the Search for files and folders named box:

ALCXMNTR.EXE

If any of these files are found please delete them.

Now empty your Recycle Bin
==========

Clean out your Temp files as follows:
Open Internet Explorer. You'll get a 404 page not found, but that is normal in safe mode.
At the top, click Tools>Internet Options> and then, in the center click Delete Cookies
Click Delete Files and then in the new applet check the box for all offline content
Click OK
Close that applet and open the C>Windows>Temp folder, and delete all files in there too, and all files in sub-folders of Temp.
Empty the C:\Windows\Prefetch Folder about once a month. More if you use the internet a lot.
Empty ALL C:\Documents and Settings\user name here[b]\LocalSettings\Temp Folders
==========

Run ewido Malware Remover

Click on the [b]Scanner
button in the left menu, then click on Settings , and under "What to scan ?", select "Every file " then click ok .
Then click on Complete System Scan . This scan can take quite a while to run.

If during your scan Ewido "crashes" or "hangs", please try scanning again. Before running the scan, click on 'Scanner' (the 3rd bar from the top on the left) and Choose 'Settings'. Uncheck 'Scan in NTFS Alternate Data Streams' as this can cause problems in overly infected systems. Click 'OK' and then follow the instructions

If ewido finds anything, it will pop up a notification. We have been finding some cases of false positives with the new version of Ewido, so we need to step through the fixes one-by-one. If Ewido finds something that you KNOW is legitimate (for example, parts of AVG Antivirus, pcAnywhere and the game "Risk" have been flagged), select "none" as the action. DO NOT check "Perform action with all infections ". If you are unsure of an entry, select "none" for the time being. I'll see that in the log you will post later and let you know if ewido needs to be run again.

When the scan finishes, click on "Save Report ". This will create a text file. Make sure you know where to find this file again.
==========

Reboot your PC in Normal Mode
Post a new HJT log
Post ewido Report
Post kapersky log
Let me know how things are running
===========

Thanks,

Rogue

Still continue with the fix as outlined even if it's not in add/remove programs.

Thanks mattman. I'll look into the error message.
Question. While doing the fix were you able to disable Winpatrol and MS Anti Spyware?
Were you able to locate and delete C:\Program Files\Spyware Cleaner ? It is still showing in your log.

Please show me an uninstall of programs.
This is how you do that:
• Open HiJackThis
• Click on the tab "Open the Misc Tools Session"
• Click on the Box that says "Uninstall Manager"
• Click on the button "Save list"
• Copy and past the List from notepad into another post

Thanks,

Rogue

Hi mattman,

We still have a couple entries we need to remove.
In a previous post I asked if you were able to delete the folder
C:\Program Files\Spyware Cleaner
I did not hear a yes or no.
I will include these steps again below.

==========

Disable MS AntiSpyware as it may interfere with our fix.

==========

Then run cwshredder that you downloaded earlier. Hit 'fix' as opposed to 'scan only'. Let it delete all it finds.
==========

Click OK.
==========

Run HijackThis as you did to generate a log, but this time click on 'Do a system scan only'.
Place a checkmark in the boxes to the left of the following entries, by clicking on them:

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Spyware Cleaner] "C:\Program Files\Spyware Cleaner\SpywareCleaner.Exe" /boot

O15 - Trusted Zone: *.vladzone.com

CLOSE ALL OPEN WINDOWS AND BROWSERS - EXCEPT HJT and click on Fix checked
==========

Using Windows Explore by right-clicking the Start button and left clicking. Explore navigate to and find the following folders: if found, delete the following files (some may not be present after previous steps):

C:\Program Files\Spyware Cleaner
==========

There are still a lot of files in Norton still in quarantine. You can remove those. If your not sure how you can go here
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/na ... 1213443506
==========

Empty your Recycle Bin

==========

Reboot your computer

==========
I want to see the trusted zone gone ;)

Post a new HJT log

==========

Regarding your ccApp message

Direct from Symantec:

Message: "ccApp.exe is not responding" during computer restart or shutdown

Situation:

When you restart or shut down your computer, you see the message "ccApp.exe is not responding . . ."

Sometimes, Windows closes the program, and you can restart or shut down the computer. At other times, you must click End Now in order to close ccApp.exe.

Solution:
Where you begin depends upon which version of Norton program you use.

Find your situation and follow the instructions:

Your computer uses a 2005 Norton program: Run LiveUpdate. Download all updates, including any Common Client updates and the Norton AntiSpam program update, if it is listed, Restart the computer when you are asked to do so. For details about how to run LiveUpdate, read How to run LiveUpdate.
If you no longer see this error message, you are done with this document.
If you still see this message, go to "Delete the Windows temporary files."
Your computer uses a 2006 Norton program: Begin with "Delete the Windows temporary files."

Hi mattman,

This is my post for when you are all clean - which you seem to be. Please advise on any problems you may still have. :-

If you haven’t already enable Microsoft AntiSpyware Real-time Protection again

Still hanging on shutdown, but clearly this must be some other problem that I need to resolve. I suspect I have some program that will not shut down. Otherwise, thanks again for all your help, and I intend on making a donation to the site for the same.

Hi mattman,

Is it still giving you the "ccApp.exe is not responding" message or any other message? FYI Norton takes a large amount of resources. You may have to be patient as those have to close. Let me know what messages you recieve.
