I should also say that i ran kaspersky online scanner earlier and it came up with a long list of trojan files. i deleted some of them at source. I hope that wasnt the wrong thing to do.

Hi thefuse,

Sorry that your log has been overlooked

IMPORTANT - Firstly make a new folder in your C:\ folder and name is HJT or something similar. Cut and Paste the HijackThis.exe that is in program files into the new folder.

I have a few questions regarding this. Since you last came to us. What security applications did you install if any? And how often have you used your computer since. And lastly, what symptons are you experiencing?

If by any chance you saved the log from the KAV scan that would be great. You could post that to me.

I will be reviewing your log now and I will make sure your fix, if anything is needed, will be here as soon as possible. Please understand all my responses to you gets checked by an expert here so that you get the best advice. Please reply to this thread only. Any questions, please ask!

Hi thefuse,

That's fine if you cannot post 'till the 17th or after. Just post a revised HJT log in this thread only and we will go from there.

Hi thefuse,

Thanks for the log. You say that things have gone from bad to worse. And you think your computer was not cleaned properly the last time you was here.

What are the problems? What symptoms are you having? Apart from a few entries we can fix in HijackThis. Your log looks clean. So is Supanet giving you a problem?

Ok. While there is nothing wrong with the HijackThis log. And the computer seems to be running slow. Let us try to clean a few things and run a few scans.

Before we do. What are the spec's of the machine. How much RAM have you got? And what size processor? To find this out right click on My Computer. Then make sure you are on General. Under Computer are the spec's. Please let me know.

----------

You are using an old version of Java. Sun's Java is sometimes updated in order to eliminate the exploitation of perceived vulnerabilities in an existing version. For this reason, it's extremely important that you keep the program up to date, and also remove the older more vulnerable versions from your system. The most current version of Sun Java is: Java Runtime Environment Version 5.0 Update 6 .

To check your version to see if it is the latest version, Please go to this link to verify your version to get the updates needed:

You'll need to use IE and allow ActiveX for this update. Follow the instructions on that page to verify Your Java software.

Or you can get the manual download here:

Once you have installed the latest update, please go to Add/Remove Programs and remove all older instances of Java listed there.

----------

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune©

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

If you use Firefox browser

Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

----------

2) Select Configurations (click the Gear wheel at the top) as follows:

Click Proceed.
3) To start the scan, Click > "Scan Now" at left

  • Deselect "Search for negligible risk entries" as negligible risk entries (MRU's) are not considered to be a threat.
  • Select "Search for low-risk threats"
  • Select "Perform full system scan"
  • Click Next
4) When the scan has completed, select Next.

  • In the Scanning Results window, select the "Critical Objects" tab.
  • Right-click on the screen and choose "Select all objects"
  • Click Next to remove the infections found, and click OK to the prompt.
  • Restart the computer.

----------

http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

Please read Ewido Setup Instructions
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

(Note: As this is a trial version, after the 14 day trial period has expired Ewido will lose some functionality with it. Ewido will then will work as an On-Demand program, make sure to check for updates regularly).

With no other windows open. Please Run Ewido

1. Click on scanner.
2. Click on Complete System Scan, the scan will now begin.

- Once you are on the Panda site click the "Scan your PC" button
- A new window will open...click the big "Check Now" button
- Enter your Country
- Enter your State/Province
- Enter your e-mail address and click send
- Select either Home User or Company
- Click the big Scan Now button
- If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
- It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It will take a couple minutes)
- Click on "Local Disks" to start the scan
- Post Panda scan results in your next reply

----------

In your next reply I would like:

A log from Ewido.
A fresh HJT log.
The uninstall_list log fromthe desktop
And the results from Panda.

Note - If the logs are too long. Post each log seperatly. Because some info may get cut off otherwise.

Ok here goes. I did everything ok until it got to panda scan. i tried three times to run that but it kept crashing and one time, avast interupted it and said 'there is a virus in C\WINDOWS\system32\Active scan\set39.tmp'
so i ran housecall instead and it came up clean.

Hi thefuse,

Everything was fine. I just need an uninstall list from HijackThis

Open up HijackThis and click on Open Misc Tools Section. Then click on Open Uninstall Manager. From there click on Save List to the right. And save it to the desktop.

Copy the contents of the uninstall_list log to me.

Andy :)

Hi thefuse,

Thanks for the last log. Firstly you have SoulSeek Client 156c installed. Please read my adsvice about any file sharing applications. This is optional. But we still need to give this out.

Please note that as long as you're using any form of peer-to-peer networking and downloading files from non-documented sources, the cleanliness of which has not been verified, you can expect infestations of malware to occur. This has not always been the case, and once upon a time was fairly safe. This can no longer be said for peer-to-peer filesharing. You may continue to do so at your own risk but cannot rely upon someone always being able to clean up your system and bail you out of trouble. This practice is in all probability the source of your current malware infestation. For comprehensive information and comparisons of P2P programs, you may want to read this linked information:

http://www.benedelman.org/spyware/p2p/

----------

Looking at the uninstal list. And for a computer with 512 RAM on it, is not a bad thing. But there is alot you have installed. Therefore your computer will run slower than normal. It is not malware related. To get over this you could either install more memory. Or uninstall some applications on there. But if you ran several applications at one time that will slow a computer down. Especially when they are big programs.

You could also make sure some programs don't run at start up. By clicking on Start>Run>Type in msconfig>click OK. Go to Startup. And from there you can uncheck the ones not required to run at startup. Click Apply then OK. It will ask you to reboot. Once back up in Normal Mode you will get a window up. Check mark where it says, if I remember right, See this evertime you reboot. You won't go wrong. There is only one check box available.

If you don't require to run an online scan again you can uninstall these:

Kaspersky On-line Scanner
Panda ActiveScan

Other than that your log looks clean.

----------

This is my post for when you are all clean - which you seem to be. Please adivise on any problems you may still have.:-

Hide System Files
1. Click Start.
2. Open My Computer.
3. SelectTools menu
4. Click Folder Options.
5. Select the View Tab.
6. Uncheck Show hidden files and foldersin the Hidden files and folders section.
7. Select Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
8. Check the Hide file extensions for known file types option.
9. Click Yes.
10. Click OK.

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
  1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
    Click Properties.
    Click the System Restore tab.
    Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

    Restart your computer

    Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
    Click Properties.
    Click the System Restore tab.
    Un-Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
  2. Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    1. From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    2. Click once on the Security tab
    3. Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    4. Click once on the Custom Level button.
      1. Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      2. Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      3. Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      4. Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      5. Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      6. Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      7. When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      8. If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    5. Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  3. Use an Anti Virus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future. See this link for a listing of some on line & their stand-alone anti virus programs:
Click here for more information on -> Computer Safety On line - Anti-Virus

I would recommend Grisofts© AVG or AVAST©. As these are the more secure and better ones.
  4. Update your Anti Virus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Anti virus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
  5. Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. For an article on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:
Click here for more information on -> Computer Safety On line - Software Firewalls

I would recommend ZoneAlarm© as a firewall as it's easy to use. But for a more secure firewall, Sunbelts Kerio© is the one.
  6. Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Set up system to ensure a regular update of the Operating System.

    Automatically:
    1. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
    2. Click Properties.
    3. Click on Automatic Updates
    4. Check the option of choice (I use Automatic (Recommended)). If you use dial-up I would recommend using the
Notify Me option so that you can download when you can afford the time and bandwidth overheads.
    5. Select the Day/Time of choice
    6. Click Apply
    7. Click OK

Next, if they're not already present, I would recommend the download and installation of some or all of the following programs (all free), and the updating of them regularly
  7. Install Spybot© - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option.
This will provide real-time spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here: Click here for more info -->Instructions for - Spybot S & D and Ad-aware
  8. Install Lavasofts© Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. You should also scan your computer with the program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software in conjunction with Spybot. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here: Click here for more info -->Instructions for - Spybot S & D and Ad-aware
  9. Install Javacools© SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer and Firefox settings and that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs. A article on anti-malware products with links for this program and others can be found here: Click here for more info -->Computer Safety on line - Anti-Malware
  10. Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically. Remember, A clean computer is a happy Computer :D

thanks for your help.
im just wondering one more thing.
i read somewhere that you shouldnt have more than one anti spyware programme running because they will conflict but i seem to have a lot more than one.
i thought i had uninstalled some of them but when you prompted me to download certain things i realised they were still there. i know youve answered this question mostly above but how do i completely uninstall them and which ones should i get reid of?

Hi thefuse,

You are correct. Like Spybot it has teatimer. Ewido has real-time protection too.(during the trial, after the trial it does not). The only real-time protection you need enabled is one antivirus. And your firewall. And SpywareBlaster(if installed). And one anti-malware application.

Most anti-spyware programs can have their protection they offer disabled and they run with no problems at all. So for example you can have Microsofts Anti-Spyware protection enabled. And Spybot S&D's teatimer disabled. And no problems will occur. Now if they had their protection both enabled. It would likely start to have problems.

When you come to anti-virus applications. We always recomend two options. To have the user decide which one to uninstall or to disable one of the real-time protection. So they won't conflict and cause a system to crash.

From your last log. All I can see that is running is Avast and your Firewall. So I hope this helped.

Andy :)
