As for anything else, it seem that the computer runs at an acceptable speed one day, (still not fast, but not super slow), and the next time I use it it is very slow, getting hung up at every new application that gets opened up. I don't understand it. The computer is starting to get old, what else could be causing this change in speeds?

Hello sparkyaber :),

The computer's memory (RAM) is quite low. You should consider upgrading the memory. How old is you computer and what specific programs are you using when it hang? Have you tried this?

Please post back a new HijackThis log.

The computer is about 4 and a half years old. As for the link you provided, I had tried all of them previously except for the removal of the past restore points. I did this and the computer ran extremely slow while it was compiling information for the disk clean up. Even right before as I clicked start-all programs-accessories- etc, it was running very slow. The computer was never this slow in the past. It seems to be getting progressively slower all the time.

Thanks

perfect example: When I pushed submit on the last post, it took 3-4 minutes to load to the page. I had the Task manager open, and CPU usage was up to about 50%, then down to 3 percent. back and forth, I thought that was normal, but maybe not?

Hello sparkyaber :),

The computer is about 4 and a half years old. As for the link you provided, I had tried all of them previously except for the removal of the past restore points. I did this and the computer ran extremely slow while it was compiling information for the disk clean up. Even right before as I clicked start-all programs-accessories- etc, it was running very slow. The computer was never this slow in the past. It seems to be getting progressively slower all the time.
It is time to consider of changing to a new computer because the useful life of a computer is about 3 to 5 years. RAM is low and it is a very possible cause. Then, there is also the possibilities of the cluttering of the system after using the computer such a long time or other errors.

perfect example: When I pushed submit on the last post, it took 3-4 minutes to load to the page. I had the Task manager open, and CPU usage was up to about 50%, then down to 3 percent. back and forth, I thought that was normal, but maybe not?
The latest Firefox 3.5.3 is faster that the 3.0 version that you are having now. Give it a try, but you need to uninstall the older version first.

Check your hard disk for error
  • Go to Start > Run.... Copy and paste the following text into the white box:
    Code: Select all
    cmd /c chkdsk c: |find /v "percent" >> "%userprofile%\desktop\checkhd.txt"
  • Click OK. A command prompt window will appear for a while. Please wait until it closes.
  • Post the contents of checkhd.txt. It is found on your desktop.

I had a hunch that the computer was getting slow because of its age, but I had an issue with malware a few months ago, and this site cleaned the computer out and it was extremely fast for awhile. I was not sure if I had malware issues, but it was worth a shot.

Here is the doc., you reqested:

The type of the file system is NTFS.

WARNING! F parameter not specified.
Running CHKDSK in read-only mode.

CHKDSK is verifying files (stage 1 of 3)...
CHKDSK is verifying indexes (stage 2 of 3)...

Errors found. CHKDSK cannot continue in read-only mode.

Thank you.

Hello sparkyaber :),

I am glad to tell that your problem is not malware related, so you are All Clear to go. The bad news is, the Chkdsk result return some errors, so you will need to perform the full Chkdsk scan and repair.

Repair your hard disk with Chkdsk
  • Go to Start > Run.... Copy and paste the following text into the white box:
    Code: Select all
    cmd /c chkdsk c: /r
  • Click OK. You will be prompted to schedule the scan on the next reboot, type Y and press Enter.
  • Type exit and then press Enter again to close the command prompt window.
  • Reboot your computer and Chkdsk will perform the repair tasks accordingly. Just let it complete.
  • If you need help, please take a look at this Chkdsk tutorial.

Now we need to clear out the programs we have been using to clean up your computer. They are not suitable for general malware removal and could cause damage if used inappropriately.
  • Run OTL by double clicking on OTL.exe. Click on CleanUp at the upper right corner, proceed to reboot if prompted.
  • Delete the GMER file on your desktop (d55k9lqp.exe).
  • Delete any logs on the desktop.
  • Uninstall HijackThis
    • Open HijackThis.
    • Go to Open the Misc Tools section by clicking on the box.
    • Scroll down until the bottom and under the Uninstall HijackThis section, click on Uninstall HijackThis & exit button.
    • Click Yes if prompted.

When you are done with the above, here are some tips to help you stay clean and safe:

1. Keep your Windows up to date. Enable Automatic Updates to always update the latest security patches from Microsoft, or you can download from the Microsoft website. Otherwise, your computer will be vulnerable to new exploits or malwares.

2. Purge System Restore. A recovery feature will only be useful if it is clean from malwares. See Windows XP System Restore Guide for some detail explanations.

3. Keep your Norton Antivirus updated regularly, it is a must for protection against viruses.

4. Keep Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, update and use it occasionally. It is a new and powerful anti-malware tool, totally free but for real-time protection you will have to pay a small one-time fee.

5. Install WinPatrol, a great protection program that helps you monitor for unwanted files or applications.

6. Install Web of Trust (WOT). WOT keeps you from dangerous websites with warnings and blockings.

7. Keep all your softwares updated. Visit Secunia Software Inspector to find out if any updates required.

9. Stand Up and Be Counted ---> Malware Complaints <--- where you can make difference!

10. Also look up So how did I get infected in the first place? By Tony Klein.

If you have any more problems, please let me know. Safe surfing.
