Hi ccinmfd,
First, if the bootup pops an F1 to continue, it usually means that some hardware checked in the POST sequence didn't check correctly.
This could be keyboard, mouse, RAM chips, drives. It is primarily a hardware check.
Read carefully any words about the error when the F1 request pops up.

From Start, Settings, Control Panel or Start, Control Panel, click Add/Remove Programs.
Highlight each Entry, as follows, one by one, if it exists, and choose Remove :

Adobe Reader 7
Any programs with Java, J2SE, or JRE in the name

Take extra care in answering questions posed by any Uninstaller. Some questions may be worded to deceive you into Keeping the program.
--------------------------------------------------------
You should Download and Install the newest version of Adobe Reader for reading pdf files, due to the vulnerabilities in earlier versions.
All versions numbered lower than 9.1 are vulnerable.
  • Go HERE and click on AdbeRdr910_en_US.exe to download the latest version of Adobe Acrobat Reader.
  • Save this file to your desktop and run it to install the latest version of Adobe Reader.

(You need to do this even if you have an earlier version of the full Acrobat).

If you would prefer a much simpler and smaller PDF reader (1.5Mb vs. 27Mb), that will run from a flash drive,
you could try Sumatra here: http://blog.kowalczyk.info/software/sumatrapdf/download.html
It also does not have the vulnerabilities that have shown up in many versions of Adobe Reader.
-----------------------------------------------------------
REBOOT Your Machine
-----------------------------------------------------------
Post a New HiJackThis Log
Start HijackThis
Click Do System Scan and Save a Log File.
When the Scan is complete, select the whole log (Ctrl-A), copy and paste the log contents in a reply.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Retrieve the List of Installed programs Using HJT
Open HijackThis, click Open The Misc Tools Section. Then scroll down the list if you need to, click Open Uninstall Manager and Save List...
The List of installed programs will automatically be saved as uninstall_list.txt in your HiJackThis folder.
In addition, the list opens in Notepad so you can also save as another name in another location if you wish.
Please paste the contents into your next reply.

ccinmfd,
-----------------------------------------------
Please Note Our Policy on the Use of P2P (Person to Person / Peer to Peer) file sharing programs
It is posted here: http://malwareremoval.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=33112
As a condition of receiving our help, I have included the P2P program Limewire in the removal instructions below, so we are not wasting our time. If you use these programs you will have a repeatedly infected computer.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove Programs Using Control Panel
From Start, Settings, Control Panel or Start, Control Panel, click Add/Remove Programs.
Highlight this Entry, if it exists, and choose Remove :

LimeWire 4.16.6

Take extra care in answering questions posed by any Uninstaller.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Disable Ad-Aware Service
This will work for either version 2007 or 2008
Go to Start, Run OR Start, Programs, Accessories, Command Prompt and type services.msc and click OK.
Under the Extended Tab, find one of these services, depending on which version you have:
Ad-Aware 2007 Service or Lavasoft Ad-Aware Service
Click once on the service to highlight it.
Right-Click on the service. Click on Properties
Select the General tab.
Next to Service Status, click Stop.
Click the Arrow-down tab on the right-hand side of the Start-up Type box.
From the drop-down menu, click on Disabled
Click Apply , then OK
-----------------------------------------------------------
File Deletion
In Windows Explorer (My Computer), navigate to the folder shown below, select View, Details, highlight the listed file only, and press Delete. Be careful not to delete any file without double-checking the exact spelling of the filename.

C:\Windows\System32\ckimzeb.dll

In case a file is shown without the location, use Find (F3) or Start, Search, enter the filename, and Delete the file, if present.
If you have any problem deleting the file, right click the file and choose Properties to see if it's read-only. Uncheck the read-only box, click Apply and OK. Then retry Delete.
If a message pops up saying "File in use", or something like that, hit Ctrl-Alt-Delete and look under the Processes tab.
If the exact filename is in there, highlight it and click End Process, then retry Delete.
Please let me know if you cannot delete or find.
------------------------------------------
UNINSTALL Flash Player
Use the download here. Don't try to uninstall it any other way.
http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/141/tn_14157.html
-------------------
REBOOT
-------------------
Get the Newest Version Flash Player
http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/ (Be sure to UNCHECK the Toolbar)
------------------------------------------------------------
Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment here : http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp, and install it to your computer.
Scroll down - It is currently the 5th item on the page (the page changes often), called JRE 6 Update 16
Select Windows and multi-language, and check to agree to the license.
Choose Windows Offline installation version.
Download it, choose Save, and save it to your desktop.
Then doubleclick it, and it will install the newest version of Java for you to use.
You can then remove the Installer from your desktop.
-----------------------------------------
Check Security Info
Download the zip file from here: http://images.malwareremoval.com/Noviciate/Sec-Info2.zip
Please unzip it to a convenient location and double click Sec-Info2.vbs
It will immediately place a file named Sec-Info.txt in the same location you used to unzip the original file.
Please post the contents of Sec-Info.txt

Let me know how it goes. We still have a few more things to do.

OK ... in order:

1. Policy noted on use of P2P file sharing programs ... never used Limewire -- maybe my son did ...

2. Removed Limewire 4.16.6

3. Disabled Ad-Aware service

4. Tried to find: C:\Windows\System32\ckimzeb.dll ... using both methods including "search" ... could not find it ... so did not delete it ...

5. Downloaded uninstall flash player via download as instructed ...

6. Rebooted

7. Got the newest version of Flash Player ... but did not see any place to "Uncheck the toolbar"

8. Downloaded the latest version of Java Runtime Environment per instructions ...

9. Checked security info per downloaded zip file ... Contents of Sec-Info.txt file as follows:

Script run: 9/8/2009 9:36:02 PM

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Company Name: PC Tools
AV Name: ThreatFire
ccinmfd,
--------------------------------------------------------
Check Disk for Space
Go to My Computer, right click the C: drive and choose Properties.
Please record what it reports for Used space and Free space on the drive and report that back in your next post.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Check Hard Disk For Errors
Press Start->Run, then type or copy/paste the following command into the box and press OK:
Code: Select all
cmd  /c  chkdsk  c:  |find  /v  "percent"  >> "%userprofile%\desktop\checkhd.txt"
A blank command window will open on your desktop, then close in a few minutes. This is normal.
A file and icon named checkhd.txt should appear on your Desktop. Please post the contents of this file.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Download and Run MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware
Please go here to the Download Location, click on Download.
  • After clicking on the download and choosing Save, the "Save to location" dialog will come up.
  • Choose Desktop as the location to save the installer and click Save again.
  • You should now have a desktop icon named mbam-setup.exe. Double-click it.
  • Let it install the program where it wants to, with the default settings, and click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • If necessary, start Malwarebytes Anti-Malware again.
  • Once the program is running, select Perform Quick Scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • If it found any malware items. Be sure that every item is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location, and post the contents in your reply.
  • The log can also be found using the "Logs" tab in the program. You can click any log listed to open its contents.
  • Recent logs are named by time/date stamp in this format : mbam-log-2009-mm-dd(hour-min-sec).txt
  • You can now delete the installer icon, named mbam-setup.exe from your desktop.
ccinmfd,
-----------------------------------------------------------
Hard Disk Repair
IF Chkdsk has found any errors having to do with bad sectors in your file system, or if it reports that it cannot continue in Read-Only Mode, it needs to run a different sequence on reboot to do repairs. It can't repair the file system while Windows is running.
DO NOT START THIS SEQUENCE UNLESS YOU CAN DO WITHOUT THE MACHINE FOR AN HOUR OR TWO. It may not take very long , but could, depending on the number of files and folders.
It will not relinquish control until it is done. You cannot stop it, and it would be a BIG mistake to pull the plug.
NOTE: If it's present on your Desktop, please delete your original file Checkhd.txt
Go To Start, Run and type cmd
hit <Enter>
Type this black text into the command window at the prompt:
chkdsk c: /F <==notice the /F, with one space between c: and /F
hit <Enter>
You will get a message that the volume is locked, with a request to do the repair on Reboot.
Answer Y
Then type exit to close the Command window.
Go to Start, Turn Off Computer and choose Reboot
It will scan again when it boots up and make the repairs as the first part of the reboot process.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Check Hard Disk For Errors
Press Start->Run, then type or copy/paste the following command into the box and press OK:
Code: Select all
cmd  /c  chkdsk  c:  |find  /v  "percent"  >> "%userprofile%\desktop\checkhd.txt"
A blank command window will open on your desktop, then close in a few minutes. This is normal.
A file and icon named checkhd.txt should appear on your Desktop. Please post the contents of this file.
The reboot did not take much longer than normal ... in fact, hardly at all ... maybe I did it wrong ...
Here is the contents of the checkhd file:
The type of the file system is NTFS.
WARNING! F parameter not specified.
Running CHKDSK in read-only mode.
CHKDSK is verifying files (stage 1 of 3)...
CHKDSK is verifying indexes (stage 2 of 3)...
.. just to double-check, I followed all the directions again and came up with the same result:
The type of the file system is NTFS.
WARNING! F parameter not specified.
Running CHKDSK in read-only mode.
CHKDSK is verifying files (stage 1 of 3)...
CHKDSK is verifying indexes (stage 2 of 3)...
ccinmfd,
Unfortunately, what that means, if you cannot run chkdsk successfully after attempted repair, is that the Hard Drive has physical defects that will continue to give you trouble. I would try to offload as many of your critical files as possible onto another medium like USB drives, etc.
I would also suggest you plan to replace the hard drive as soon as possible, before it fails completely.
There are forums who specialize in that kind of problem and can help you do that.
