Hi, Welcome to the Malware Removal.
My name is Francis, and I'll be helping you with your malware problems.
HijackThis logs can take a while to research, so please be patient.

Before we begin...please note the following important guidelines.
  1. The instructions being given are for YOUR computer and system only!.
Using these instructions on a different computer can cause damage to that computer and possibly render it inoperable!
  2. Please, if you have questions about something...ASK, don't guess or assume.
  3. Please -only- post your problem at one help site. Applying fixes from multiple help sites can cause problems.
  4. Please -only- reply to this thread, do not start another!
  5. Please do not run any other fix/removal tools unless instructed to do so!
  6. Print each set of instructions...if possible...your Internet connection will not be available during some fix processes.
  7. Please, continue responding, until I give you the "All Clean"

No reply after 3 days in your thread will result in your topic being closed
Please notify me in advance if you are not able to reply me within 3 days

1 - RSIT
Please download RSIT by random/random and save it to your Desktop.

  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT
  • Before you click "Continue", make sure you change the List files/folders created or modified in the last 3 months
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt-> maximized and info.txt -> minimized in your next reply.

2 - GMER
Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here.
  • Double click the .exe file. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent
  • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan...click on NO

    Image
Click the image to enlarge it
  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following ...
    • Sections
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
    • Show All (don't miss this one)
  • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish
  • Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and post it in reply
**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries

Note: Do not run any programs while Gmer is running.

3 - Status Check
In your next reply, please post the following

  • Both RSIT log
  • GMER log

I am now unable to even get to www.malwareremoval.com to do the steps mentioned above. I can get to just about any other website and cannot even search for the RSIT download. I'm posting this reply from another computer. Any suggestions???

Hi,
Do you have a cd or pendrive?
Since you are not able to do anything with the infected pc, I would suggest you to download the tools needed from the pc that you currently use to reply to my request, save it to your pendrive or burn it to a cd and transfer/install the tools on the infected pc.

Please let me know if you are able to execute the above instructions.

Thank you.

Hi, thank you for the uninstall list.
Now please proceed with the following.

1 - Add/Remove Program
  • Click Start
  • Go to Control Panel
  • Go to Add/Remove Programs
  • Find and click Remove for the following (if present):

    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_05
    Java(TM) 6 Update 2
    Java(TM) 6 Update 7
    Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1

2 - Update Java
  • Go to Java Site
  • Click to Download Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 16
  • In Platform box choose Windows.
  • Check the box to Accept License Agreement and click Continue.
  • Click on Windows Offline Installation, click on the link under it which says "jre-6u16-windows-i586-p.exe" and save the downloaded file to your desktop.
  • Install the new version by running the newly-downloaded file with the java icon which will be at your desktop, and follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Reboot your computer

3 - Malwarebytes Anti Malware
I see from your log that you already have MBAM installed,
  • Run MBAM and update its definition file.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Full Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process.
If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Additional question.
Can you please let me know if you set the following in your host file?

-----------------EOF-----------------

I know nothing about the host files. When I intially ran HijackThis, the following message appeared :

For some reason your system denied write access to the Hosts file. If any hijacked domains are in this file, HijackThis may NOT be able to fix this.

If that happens, you need to edit the file yourself. To do this, click Start, Run and type:

notepad C:\WINDOWS\System32\drivers\etc\hosts

and press Enter. Find line(s) HijackThis reports and delete them. Save the file as 'hosts.' (with quotes), and reboot.

For Vista: simply, exit HijackThis, right click on the HijackThis icon, choose 'Run as administrator.'

I followed the directions. There were no lines with HijackThis listed so there was nothing to delete. I did notice that my hosts file that is located in the directory is an iCalendar File type. Not sure if that's normal or not.

As for an update on the system. I still cannot run TaskManager and obviously haven't tried to do a System Restore. A note I forgot to put originally is that my husband accidentally downloaded Windows Protection Suite
(this was around 8/17/09) and that's what started this whole thing. I went through and unistalled/deleted it and ran the MWB and had over 150 infected files and did the Removed Selected. I've also had problems since with Internet Explorer closing because it encounters a problem. Sorry I didn't mention this before.

Hi,
Thanks for the reply. Please note the following
I did notice that my hosts file that is located in the directory is an iCalendar File type. Not sure if that's normal or not.

Please provide me the exact location of the file, e.g C:\Windows\........

I went through and unistalled/deleted it and ran the MWB and had over 150 infected files and did the Removed Selected. I've also had problems since with Internet Explorer closing because it encounters a problem. Sorry I didn't mention this before.

Possible for you to locate and post back the log here?

That file is located in: C:\WINDOWS\System32\Drivers\etc

I'm attaching the previous MWB file from 8/20/09. It was too bing to cut and paste.

Re: Not sure what's wrong...cannot run taskmgr or system resotre

Unread postby francis327 » September 6th, 2009, 4:52 am

Hi,
How is your system is behaving now?
Is it possible for you to run task manager now?

O15 - Trusted Zone: *.taxsoftware.com

Do you know anything about the above entry? Have you ever set the above address as a trusted site in your IE?
Please let me know in your next reply.
Please proceed with the following

1 - Replace Hosts File
Please download the MVPS Hosts File fron HERE

Note: This download includes a simple batch file (mvps.bat) that will rename the existing HOSTS file to HOSTS.MVP then copy the included updated HOSTS file to the proper location. For more information please see the readme.txt included in the download.

  • To use: double-click on mvps.bat
  • Important: Windows Vista requires special instructions:
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hostsvista.htm

Note: if prompted by one of your Security programs about this file, allow it to run. Also if
you are prompted by a Security program about changes to the HOSTS file = allow them.

For more information, please visit HERE

2 - Using Window Explorer to Navigate Files and Folders
Navigating and Deleting a Folder
  • Using Windows Explorer (to get there right-click your Start button and go to "Explore"), please delete this folders (if present):

    c:\program files\LimeWire

3 - Status Check
In your next reply, please post the following
  • New HijackThis log
  • Answer to my 2 questions

Computer seems to be running okay. I can now open task manager. I don't know anything about taxsoftware.com. I've never been to it and I don't usually add trusted sites.

Hi,
Glad to hear that you are doing fine with your system.
Just a question, did you replace your host file? The bad hosts entries are still listed in your HJT.

Let's fix something over.

1 - HijackThis Fix Check
Please run HijackThis and click "Do a system scan only". Place a check (tick) next to the following entries (if present):

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customi ... ch/ie.html
O1 - Hosts: 69.249.196.166 idenupdate.motorola.com
O1 - Hosts: 74.125.45.100 4-open-davinci.com
O1 - Hosts: 74.125.45.100 securitysoftwarepayments.com
O1 - Hosts: 74.125.45.100 privatesecuredpayments.com
O1 - Hosts: 74.125.45.100 secure.privatesecuredpayments.com
O1 - Hosts: 74.125.45.100 getantivirusplusnow.com
O1 - Hosts: 74.125.45.100 secure-plus-payments.com
O1 - Hosts: 74.125.45.100 http://www.getantivirusplusnow.com
O1 - Hosts: 74.125.45.100 http://www.secure-plus-payments.com
O1 - Hosts: 74.125.45.100 http://www.getavplusnow.com
O1 - Hosts: 74.125.45.100 http://www.securesoftwarebill.com
O1 - Hosts: 74.125.45.100 secure.paysecuresystem.com
O15 - Trusted Zone: *.taxsoftware.com

Now please close ALL open windows except HijackThis and press "Fix checked".
Then please exit HijackThis.

NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords
please click No at the prompt.

  • Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

3 - Kaspersky Online Scan
Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

  1. Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  2. It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  3. When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  4. Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:

    2. Archives
    3. Mail Databases
  5. Click on My Computer under Scan.
  6. Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  7. You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  8. Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
