New "Virus Protection" program with pop ups on computer...
The program si Personal Antivirus. It will not uninstall. My daughter was on MySpace yesterday looking at friends' pictures when the computer began acting badly. The internet windows closed, etc. This PERSONAL ANTIVIRUS program continues to run and pop up information about trojans, worms, etc. in the bottom right corner of screen. It has identified FormSpy at 81.95.109.11; W32.SillyFDC.BAZ worm; and W32.Ackantta.B@mm mass mailing worm. I don't know what is going on. I ran windows defender last night, but did not see any results. It was still running when I went to bed...

Thanks in advance for your time and help!!!!!

Hi sharon.anglin,

Thanks for the uninstall log. We need some more information now.

RSIT
  • Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open, log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized)
  • Copy & paste the contents of both logs in your next reply

Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here.
  • Double click the .exe file. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent
  • If it gives you a warning at program start about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run a scan...click NO.
  • Run Gmer again and click on the Rootkit tab.
  • Look at the right hand side (under Files) and uncheck all drives with the exception of your C drive.
  • Make sure all other boxes on the right of the screen are checked, EXCEPT for "Show All".
  • Click on the "Scan" and wait for the scan to finish.
Note: Before scanning, make sure all other running programs are closed and no other actions like a scheduled antivirus scan will occur while this scan completes. Also do not use your computer during the scan.
  • When completed, click on the Copy button and right-click on your Desktop, choose "New" > Text document. Once the file is created, open it and right-click again and choose Paste or Ctrl+V. Save the file as gmer.txt and copy the information in your next reply.
  • Note: If you have any problems, try running GMER in SAFE MODE"
Important! Please do not select the "Show all" checkbox during the scan..

Please post the GMER log along with log.txt and info.txt from the RSIT scan into your next reply.

Hi again,

the REIT runs then stops as it appears to be finishing and shows an error message stating:

C:\rsit\log.txt
Access denied.
OK

I tried three times with the same results.
Then I tried GMER. It did not complete the first way. So, I
ran the rootkit scan. It started and then the machine shut down
to a dos style warning page and restarted. However, the restarted is freezing with
a black screen and only the cursor arrow. The arrow moves but nothing else works.
Task manager does nothing. I unplugged power to reboot and the same
result happened.

So I have no other logs for you at this time. I will continue to try to run the gmer scan.

Eager for your reply.
Thanks,
Sharon

Hi again,

I was able to tun GMER in Safe mode. However, It Warned me:
"WARNING!!!"
"GMER has found system modifications caused by ROOTKIT activity."
"OK"

I followed your steps for copying and saving to a text document. However, the new text would not allow me access. I was unable to copy the log to a text document. So, I pasted it here below. I was never able to run RSIT.EXE

Thanks,
Sharon

Hi sharon.anglin,

For future posts please do not add attachments, copy and paste the logs into the reply (see here for an explanation.)

Thanks for the GMER log, it has identified the problem.

ComboFix
Download ComboFix from one of these locations (DO NOT download ComboFix from anywhere else but one of the provided links):
Link 1
Link 2

**IMPORTANT !!! Rename ComboFix.exe to commy.exe BEFORE you save it to your Desktop**

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
A guide to do this can be found here
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console
Image
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:
Image

  • Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the contents of C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply
A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may cause to your machine by running ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

Now please run a new GMER scan using the instructions previously posted and then a new HijackThis scan.

To post in next reply:
ComboFix log
gmer.txt from GMER
HijackThis log
Update on how the computer is running

Hi,

I downloaded and ran the commy.exe file. I did not see any of the windows shown in the previous post. The Commy.exe file ran and rebooted the computer...but...it says "Preparing Log Report. Do not run any programs untill ComboFix has finished" It does nothing. Additionally, during the restart, the computer restarts virus protection programs, etc. and update boxes pop up. Please advise.

Thanks,
Sharon

p.s. sorry for the previous attachment.

The Commy.exe program never finished. I exited out after a few hours. I reran it. Same results. Exited out and ran GMER and HijackThis. See Results below.

I am about to restart and will give behavior report soon.

Thanks,
Sharon

Re: New "Virus Protection" program with pop ups on computer...

Unread postby deltalima » September 5th, 2009, 4:10 am

Hi sharon.anglin,

Please use Windows Explorer to navigate to the C: drive and look for the file C:\ComboFix.txt. If the file is there please open in with Notepad and post the contents here. If the file is not there then please delete commy.exe from the desktop and download and run it again using the previously posted instructions.

When the scan has completed please post the contents of C:\ComboFix.txt back into this thread.

Hi sharon.anglin,

Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript.txt into Commy.exe
When finished, it shall produce a log for you at "C:\ComboFix.txt"

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
  • MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
  • On the Scanner tab:
    • Make sure the "Perform Full Scan" option is selected.
    • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
  • Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below)
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Now please post the log from Malwarebytes Anti-Malware along with the log from a new commy.exe scan.

I ran the full scan and found 7 infections. The log could not automatically open. The computer did restart, but I am still unable to open the log. The following is the error message I received after the removal and after the restart when trying to access the log file:

C:\Documents and Settings\HP_Administrator\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-2009-09-09 (17-52-28).txt
Access is denied.
OK

Thanks,
Sharon
