I seem to have picked up some kind of spyware / virus...

Unread postby darrrius » August 22nd, 2009, 4:35 pm

Hi There - I'm new to this forum but have been told this is the place to come for help!

I seem to have picked up a virus / spyware. I keep getting fake virus messages and have a new program install itself called "AV Care"

What do I need to do to get rid of this?

This virus seems to play random web radio...what sounds like pirate radio stations. This is happening while connected to the internet. I am still being redirected to dodgy websites and the computer as a whole is not working correctly... doesnt boot up every time and freezes sometimes.

I'd be most grateful if someone could help me with these problems..

I have installed Hijack This and here is the logfile:

Hello and welcome to Malware Removal Forums

IMPORTANT

Whatever repairs we make, are for fixing your computer problems only and by no means should be used on another computer.
To make cleaning this machine easier:-
  • Continue to respond to this thread until I give you the All Clean!
  • Please DO NOT uninstall/install any programs unless asked to. It is more difficult when files/programs appear or disappear from the logs.
  • Please do not run any scans other than those requested and do not post any logs/reports unless specifically requested to do so.
  • Please follow all instructions in the order posted.
  • If you have any questions or do not understand instructions, please ask before continuing.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

Make an uninstall list using HijackThis
To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:
  • Start HijackThis
  • Click on the Config button
  • Click on the Misc Tools button
  • Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
  • Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Save the file to your desktop.

Please post this log on your next reply.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and save to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to:

    Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform Full scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please copy and paste the log back into your next reply

    Note:
  • The log can also be found here:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt
  • Or via the Logs tab when Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware is started.

NEXT If MBAM will not run please rename it as explained below

1. Right click Start - Click Explore
2. Navigate to: c:\program files\malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Right click on mbam.exe - click Rename
3. Type into the name box: muppy.exe

NEXT Download and Run: RSIT

  • Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized)

Please reply with:-
  • Uninstall list
  • MBAM log
  • RSIT logs ( info.txt and log.txt)

Unread postby darrrius » August 25th, 2009, 5:29 pm

Hello - thanks for taking the time to help me with this!

I've had a few problems with Malware Bytes... I simply cannot get this program to install properly and run. Firstly, the program does not finish installing and instead hangs toward the end of the installation... when I end this installation manually, I desktop icon has been created for the program, and the files exist in c:\program files\malwarebytes' Anti-Malware. However I cannot get the program to run, even after renaming it as suggested.

Also, RSIT only produces 1 log, not two as it was supposed to, which I have posted below:

Re: I seem to have picked up some kind of spyware / virus...

Please read what is below carefully, then let me know what you decide to do.

IMPORTANT
One or more of the identified infections that you have is a backdoor trojan.

This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and Download and Execute files

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the Trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of its backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of Trojan, the best course of action would be to reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?

When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

We can attempt to clean this machine but I can't guarantee that it will be secure afterwards. The system will be extremely unlikely to be returned to its pre-infection state.

Should you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

Hi Muppy

Thanks... Its a shame to have to do a complete re-format and re-install, but if that is what you would reccommend then that is what I will do.

Since the machine became infected I did not use it at all for internet banking or accessing any personal data, although it was used for these purposes prior to the infection. Would these hackers still be able to access my personal info even though I did not use it for internet banking after the infection?

Kind regards

Even with a re-format it is essential to change all passwords from a known clean computer, there is no point in taking chances. Your accounts may not have been compromised, and may never be but if information was retrieved from it there is always a chance that someone is at this moment selling your details.

Although you say it was not used after the infection, how can you be sure. There is more than one infection on your machine!

I hope this helps.

OK I see what you are saying - thanks, I'll take the appropriate steps and then get on with the reformatting and re-install

I'm guttted that this has happened as I thought my machine was protected... I paid money for McAfee which I thought would protect me against this type of thing.

Unfortunately there is no one product that will protect you from all that is out there. It requires a balance of protection and safe surfing habits. Sadly there is big money to made in Malware, Spyware and the creation of new and improved virus’s

Here are some free programs I recommend that could help you improve your computer's security.

Update your Antivirus programs and other security products regularly to avoid new threats that could infect your system. If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. If you use the Windows Firewall you might think that's sufficient but it only controls one way of the traffic (inbound). Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

You can use one of these sites to check if any updates are needed for your pc.
Secunia Software Inspector
F-secure Health Check

Install WinPatrol
Download it from here
Here you can find information about how WinPatrol works here

Install MVPS Hosts File from here
The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer.
Find Tutorial here : http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm

Read some information here how to prevent Malware.

Continuing as per request!

Download and run Combofix
This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools.
  • If you need help to disable your protection programs see here.
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it will produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

If you need help, see this link:

Please reply with:-
  • Combofix log
  • New HJT log
