Deluge of "anti-spyware"

Unread postby Sunflash » August 20th, 2009, 8:26 pm

I've been using Google Chrome web browser for some time now, and my computer hasn't had a lot of trouble with internet viruses. In fact, my computer was connected to the internet all summer with no ill effects.

I recently visited the "student organizations" website of my university, Murray State University in Kentucky, and Chrome warned me that the site might be harmful for my computer. I went ahead anyway, thinking that surely MSU's own website would be secure from that sort of thing. Well, the page took a little longer than usual to load, and Chrome asked if I wanted to kill the pages or wait. I decided to wait and left the room. When I came back, I had a new icon in my lower right hand corner: a red circle with a white "x." A balloon popped up with a "message" about spyware. I still have it on my screen, so here is what it says verbatim:
---
(In bold) Your computer is infected!

(Regular style) Windows has detected spyware infection!

It is recommended to use special antispyware tools to pervent data loss.Windows will now download and install the most up-to-date antispyware for you.

Click here to protect your computer from spyware!
---
Naturally, the spelling/grammar errors gave it away. I ran Trend Micro to try and get rid of it, but it couldn't detect it. After consulting with my dad (who said this virus was called the "Advanced Virus Protection Virus" or some such thing), I installed AVG Anti-Virus Free and tried again. AVG cleared out that virus. The next day, I had serious issues opening applications, folders and even the task manager. I had to force the computer to power down several times by holding in the power button. I picked up a new virus called "Total Security Version 4.52", which is constantly popping up windows and "scanning" and asking me to register or remove threats to my system. I tried to run AVG again, but kept getting application errors that forced the program to quit.

Consulting with my dad again, I rebooted Windows in safe mode and ran AVG. When the scan was over, I rebooted normally, and found that not only had AVG failed to remove Total Security, but the original Advanced Virus Protection Virus had returned. In fact, there were TWO icons for it!

There's also something completely new that I've never seen before called "PC Antispyware 2010", which is also popping up windows.

By now I recognize the names of the processes in my task manager for these programs:

12277184.exe (Total Security)
braviax.exe (Advanced Virus Protection Virus)
PC_Antispyware.exe (PC Antispyware 2010)

I can "turn these off" from the task manager, but they reappear when I reboot and so far I haven't been able to remove them from my computer. I installed HijackThis; I had to change the application name ("killer.exe") and move it from its program folder to get it to open (trick the spyware).

Here is my HijackThis report:
---

In the time it took for you to reply, my friends and I managed to eliminate the trojan virus (Rootkit-Pakes.M) and restore my system to a working state. It's still a little quirky, and we are planning on reformatting it later. At this point, I think the worst is over.
