Hi,

We were setting H:\ drive up to run with the Wester Digital WD Anywhere Backup utility, but that program was too much of a memory hog for our old computer. We are now only storing copies of important files in there manually. There should still be a backup partition in there, but it is not being actively used. I backed up a large number of files manually before running the Combofix utility the first time.

I ran TFC successfully, and it restarted the computer to remove some additional files.

Kaspersky won't run, it says the Java is not installed. At the Java website it can detect the Java program, but it fails to run its test application. I tried all of their fixes and the reinstall, but it still won't work.

I am attaching the ComboFix-quarantined-files.txt and a new log for HijackThis

It appears that Java is working well in Opera. I am now attempting a run with Kaspersky. I'll post the log and another HijackThis log after it runs.

Hi,

No luck with Kaspersky Scanner. I got this error message in a new window before the scan could start:

<www.kaspersky.com>

Update has failed. Program has failed to start. Close the Kaspersky Online Scanner 7.0 window and open it again to install the program.

You must be online to update the Kaspersky Online Scanner 7 database. With the latest database updates, you can find new viruses and other threats. Please go online to use Kaspersky Online Scanner 7. [ERROR: Antivirus bases have been updated after key expiration]

Hi

Don't worry about the Kaspersky scan... we'll try another one shortly. But first we'll upload those files.

Please visit this site & follow the instructions for uploading the [4]-Submit_2009-08-22_03.34.49.zip file.
Copy/paste the contents of the Code Box below into the Link to topic where this file was requested: box:
Code: Select all

  • Place a checkmark next to these lines(if still present):
O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {CD67F990-D8E9-11d2-98FE-00C0F0318AFE} - (no file)

  • Close all windows except Hijackthis and click Fix Checked
  • Click Yes when prompted
  • Close HijackThis.
ESET Online Scanner
Go here to run an online scannner from ESET.
  • Note: You will need to use Internet explorer for this scan

Hi

Looks good. Those items Eset flagged are in old System restore points. We'll remove all old restore points as part of the clean up process.

But first I'd like you to run MBR.exe from your H Drive. So if still have it drag it to your H Drive. If you deleted it then download it again & save to your H Drive:
http://www2.gmer.net/mbr/mbr.exe
  • Double-click the file to run the scan (a window will open briefly, then close)
  • The scan will create a mbr.log at H:\mbr.log - copy/paste those contents in your next reply

Hello,

I'm glad that things are looking good. It's a long process, but I'm a stubborn person. I'd feel like I was letting the bad guys win if I ended up doing a fresh install. I do appreciate what you and all of the other volunteers here are doing.

This experience has given me an extra dose of paranoia. There are still three files I see in C:\Windows that look suspicious to me and are not being picked up by scans. Those are PEV.exe, 0535251103110107106.yux, and fdgg34353edfgdfdf. All three were created on 8/19 and 8/20. If I can find three suspicious files, there must be more buried in our system.

Hi

Pev.exe is fine, no to worry about that one.
Do you have the full paths for the other two?

  • Double click on OTM.exe to run it
  • Copy & paste the contents of the Code box below into Paste Instructions for Items to be Moved
Note: Do not type it out to minimize the risk of typo error
Code: Select all

c:\windows\0535251103110107106.yux
c:\windows\fdgg34353edfgdfdf
:Commands
[Purity]
[EmptyTemp]
[Reboot]

  • Click on MoveIt!
  • When done, click on Exit
Note: If a file or folder can't be moved immediately, you may be asked to restart your computer. Choose Yes.
A log will be produced at C:\_OTM\MovedFiles\date_time.log, where date_time are numbers. Post this log in your next reply.

Could you also run DDS again & post both logs.

Good work... Logs appear to be clean

Update Adobe Reader
Recently there have been vunerabilities detected in older versions of Adobe Reader. It is strongly suggested that you update to the current version: Adobe Reader 9.1
You can download it from http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
If you already have Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition installed or do not wish to have it installed Uncheck the box which says Also Download Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition.

Adobe 9 is a large program and if you prefer a smaller program you can get Foxit 3 instead from http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php
Note: Do not install anything dealing with AskBar... presented as an installation option.

Clean Up
Now we need to clear out the programs we've been using to clean up your computer, they are not suitable for general malware removal and could cause damage if used inappropriately.
Remove ComboFix
The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset System Restore points:
Click Start > Run then copy/paste the following bolded text into the Run box and click OK:
ComboFix /u
  • Double-click OTM
  • Click the CleanUp! button
  • Select Yes when the Begin cleanup Process? prompt appears
  • If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes
  • The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it yourself
You can delete the following from your desktop:
DDS.scr
The Gmer.exe file (it will be randomly named .exe file)
RootRepeal.exe & the RootRepeal zip file
MBR.exe
TFC.exe
Any logs that may have been saved to your desktop

You can also uninstall both the Kaspersky Online Scanner & Eset Online Scanner. Both can be uninstalled via Add or Remove Programs
You should also remove HijackThis. You can do this by going to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis
  • Double click HijackThis.exe
  • From the Main menu click Open the Misc Tools section
  • Using the scroll bar, scroll down to Uninstall HijackThis
  • Click Uninstall HijackThis & exit then click Yes at the prompt
Any problems?

Thank you so much for all of the help. You've been great. I'll be giving this site a donation, and I'll definitely let anyone else that is having similar trouble know about this site.

No problems cleaning up the software, except Kaspersky was not on the add/remove list.

Keep up the great work!

Thank you so much for all of the help.
No problem at all... Glad I could help :)

All Clean
Congratulations, good work, your system is now clean. Now that your system is safe we would like you to keep it that way.
Take the time to follow these recommendations & it will greatly reduce the risk of further infections and greatly diminish the chances of you having to visit here again.

Create a Clean System Restore Point
Create a new, clean System Restore point which you can use in case of future system problems:
Press Start->All Programs->Accessories->System Tools->System Restore
Select Create a restore point, then Next, type a name like All Clean then press the Create button and once it's done press Close
Now remove old, infected System Restore points:
Next click Start->Run and type cleanmgr in the box and click OK
Ensure the boxes for Temporary Files & Temporary Internet Files are checked. You can choose to check other boxes if you wish but they are not required.
Select the More Options tab, under System Restore click Clean up... and click Yes to the prompt
Click OK and Yes to confirm.

Microsoft Windows Update
Microsoft releases patches for Windows and Office products regularly to patch up Windows and Office products loopholes and fix any bugs found. Install the updates immediately if they are found.
To update Windows
Go to Start > All Programs > Windows Update
To update Office
Open up any Office program.
Go to Help > Check for Updates

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware is a new and powerful anti-malware tool. It is totally free but for real-time protection you will have to pay a small one-time fee.
You can find a tutorial here. I would recommend keeping this updated & running it regularly.

SpywareBlaster
Download and install Javacools SpywareBlaster from here
SpywareBlaster adds a list of ActiveX controls, tracking cookies and sites which will be blocked in either Internet Explorer or Firefox browsers. You need to manually check for updates regularly.

Download and Install a HOSTS File
A HOSTS file is a big list of bad web sites. The list has a specific format, a specific name, (name is just HOSTS with no file extension), and a specific location. Your machine always looks at that file in that location before connecting to a web site to verify the address. So the HOSTS listing can be used to "short circuit" a request to a bad website by giving it the address of your own machine.

Download BlueTack's HOSTS Manager here, using Internet Explorer (Firefox won't work):
  • A short distance down the page in the centre, click on the Download button
  • Agree to the license
  • On the next page, to the right side of where it says Download Estimates, right click on the underlined word Hosts Manager choose Save Target As and download the installer Hosts20setup.exe to your desktop
  • Double click the Installer on your desktop and let it Install the Hosts Manager
  • After the installation is complete, click on the Hosts Manager icon on your desktop. (You can delete the other Hosts Switch icon from your desktop)
  • When the Hosts Manager comes up, click the small down arrows on the right side of the bar labeled Options and Tools,
  • Click Disable DNS Service. This is important
  • In the Left Pane, click Download
  • It will load 80,000 lines or more. When it finishes, also in the left pane, click Replace, and then click Save
You can use this manager to handle your HOSTS file download, edits, and most any other HOSTS issue.
If you have a separate party firewall or Winpatrol, you may have to give permissions at various times to Unlock the present default HOSTS file and install the new one.

Web of Trust
WOT, Web of Trust, warns you about risky websites that try to scam visitors, deliver malware or send spam. Protect your computer against online threats by using WOT as your front-line layer of protection when browsing or searching in unfamiliar territory. WOT's color-coded icons show you ratings for 21 million websites, helping you avoid the dangerous sites:
  • Green to go
  • Yellow for caution
  • Red to stop
WOT has an addon available for both Firefox and Internet Explorer.

Install WinPatrol
Download it here
You can find information about how WinPatrol works here

Read some information here on how to prevent Malware.

Hopefully these steps will help keep your computer clean.

Stand Up and Be Counted ---> Malware Complaints <--- where you can make difference!
The site offers people who have been (or are) victims of malware the opportunity to document their story and, in that way, launch a complaint against the malware and the makers of the malware.

If there are any other questions then feel free to ask or in future do not hesitate to contact us here at The Malware Removal Forums
