Trouble--PC Antispyware 2010 and w32/cutwail.a!rootkit virus

Unread postby frusterated » August 7th, 2009, 5:24 pm

Hi,
Yesterday I got the PC antispyware 2010 virus on my computer along with the cutwail virus. I have scanned my computer multiple times with McAffee, Malwarebytes and Superantispyware. It seems that each time I reboot to complete each removal of bad items, they come back. I don't think that the PC 2010 one came back, but I the cutwail virus is there everytime. I was also getting the stop error screen that said it was dumping my physical memory. Furthermore, the first time after a reboot, IE takes 20 minutes to load up and sometimes McAffee is disabled and not working.

I am asking for some help please.

Thank you,
Frusterated

I have provided my HJT log.

Hi,

We meet again but unfortuantely I have bad news I'm afraid :(

One or more of the identified infections is a severe Polymorphic File Infector

This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and Download and Execute files.

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Unfortunately no attempt could be made to clean this machine, it could never be considered to be truly clean, secure, or trustworthy. We could not say definitively that unknown and unseen malware will have been removed, nor will your system be restored to its pre-infection state. We cannot remedy unknown changes the malware may likely have made in order to allow itself access, nor can we repair the damage it may possibly have caused to vital system files. Additionally, it is quite possible that changes made to the system by the malware may impact negatively on your computer during the removal process. In short, your system may never regain its former stability or its full functionality without a reformat. Therefore, your best and only course of action is a reformat and reinstallation of the Windows operating system, and that is the course we strongly recommend.

Please read these for more information:

Virut and other Other File Infectors

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?

When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

Next:

I suggest you to start backup all of your valuable data/documents/pictures/movies/songs/etc..
Do NOT backup any applications/installers and Do NOT backup any .exe/.scr/.htm/.html/.xml/.zip/.rar files...
This is because these files may be infected as well. If you back them up and replace them afterwards, it will infect your computer again.

Should you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

Next:

The below is entirely optional on your behalf, which I would like for your good self to carry out before the format. I will not be offended if you decline OK.

We would be grateful if you could assist us in our research into this infection by providing us with some samples and information from your machine. This will only take a minute or two to complete, and is very simple. If you wish to help us, please do the following:

  • Download VAPrep.bat and save it to your Desktop.
  • Double-click VAPrep.bat to run it. It will only take a moment to complete.
  • When done, please right-click the VAPrep folder which should now be on your Desktop. Select Send To >> Compressed (zipped) Folder.
  • Next, please go to this webpage.
  • Browse to the VAPrep.zip zipped folder you just created.
  • Click Send File.

Once done, you can delete the VAPrep folder and .zip file from you Desktop. Thanks for helping us out.

Hello again so soon,

Thank you for responding to my need again. Good thing I have a laptop to help me out here.

I do have a few questions for you. Forgive me please if I ask silly questions, I do not know a whole lot about this stuff. Can a system restore point still bring my system back to what it was? And if we have not typed in sensitive information since the virus came, is that information also at risk?

I will probably have more questions during the whole process as I have never done this before.

Sincerely,

Hi :)

The Developer of VAPrep informed myself you uploaded a file and it is appreciated, however you uploaded the actual application itself (the batch file).

Could you run it again please and upload the VAPrep folder after you have converted it to a zip file, thank you.

You're welcome! I actually recorgnised your user name so had a look and was dismayed to discover such a dire malware infection.

I do have a few questions for you. Forgive me please if I ask silly questions, I do not know a whole lot about this stuff.
Not a problem in the least I assure you.

Can a system restore point still bring my system back to what it was?
No this is not a option most unfortunately and all that will most likely occur is your machine will remain both compromised and infected.

And if we have not typed in sensitive information since the virus came, is that information also at risk?
If you have done any banking or other financial transactions recently it would be prudent via a known clean computer to change all passwords where applicable.

It would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

I will probably have more questions during the whole process as I have never done this before.

Not a problem, remember anything you need to know just ask OK

This is a very good guide that explains how to carry out a a reformat and reinstallation of the Windows operating system.

How to Reformat and Reinstall your Operating System

When completed, let myself know via your Laptop and I will post advise about what software to download/install on the computer you have formatted etc.

Hey,

Another question: If I backup all of our email files will that transfer the virus over onto my USB stick?
I was going to use Outlook Express Quick Backup.

The Developer of VAPrep informed myself you uploaded a file and it is appreciated, however you uploaded the actual application itself (the batch file).

Could you run it again please and upload the VAPrep folder after you have converted it to a zip file, thank you.

Will do.

Another question: I went to that website your referred me too on help reinstalling and stuff.
If your system is listed below there is a restore to factory settings function. The links are clickable

DELL

LENOVO (IBM)

ACER This will download the E-Recovery Zip file. Unzip, then run.

So you are going to reformat and re-install Windows ?

Note added by WTT

Note: If you intend to use the following tutorial as a guide when re-formating your drive and re-installing your Operating System, we strongly suggest you print out the tutorial and keep it handy throughout the entire procedure. To access a "printer-friendly" version of this material, please click on the "Options" button which is located on the far right of your screen and choose "Print this topic" from the drop down menu. Then print out this version using the print function available through your browser.

Preparation is the secret to success so we shall start there :

PREPARATION

1. Ensure you have the following discs
A. Operating System disc or Manufacturers recovery disc.
B. Windows KEY found either in the disc holder for the Windows CD or in a sticker on the side of your system
C. Motherboard drivers disc.
D ISP disc with Modem/DSL drivers and setup.
E. Programme installation discs (i.e. Word, Photo editing etc.) If you have no discs but downloaded them from the Internet then see below.

I just want to check. I have to restore to the factory settings under the dell link, right? I have a paper from dell that says I don't need an operating system cd or drivers cd. Therefore I do not have A or C cd's. Is this then correct that I do the factory restore?

Thank you again,

Hi :)

Thank you for rerunning VAPrep.

If I backup all of our email files will that transfer the virus over onto my USB stick?
I was going to use Outlook Express Quick Backup.
Unfortunately this is not advised or safe option I'm afraid as one of the files created with this software as part of the backup folder is a executable by the name of oeqb.exe. So this backup will reinfect you newly formatted computer.

I have a paper from dell that says I don't need an operating system cd or drivers cd. Therefore I do not have A or C cd's. Is this then correct that I do the factory restore?
Correct, your computer then has something known as a Dell System Restore (DSR) feature.

This is basically a format and will put back your system to the condition it was when purchased operating system wise etc.

You are very welcome!

Hi,

The computer is back in its orginal state. It was pretty easy to do. I am sure glad I didn't have to do what I thought was going to be necessary.

You mentioned previously about recommendations to programs I should download. Also, I am ready to give McAfee the boot. Which program do you recommend in replacement?

Hi :)

The below is some of my recommendations on what to do/install afterwards.

Reformat and Reinstallation Advice:

  • Use an Anti Virus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.
Here are some free Anti Virus programs which I recommend to use:
    • Antivir PersonalEditionClassic
      • Free anti-virus software for Windows.
      • Detects and removes more than 50,000 viruses. Free support.
    • avast! 4 Home Edition
        • Anti-virus program for Windows.
        • The home edition is freeware for noncommercial users.
    • Update your Anti Virus Software - It is imperative that you update your Anti virus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
    • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.
Here are some free Firewalls which I recommend to use:
(Use only one, and disable your Windows Firewall)
Note: Only ever have installed/use one Anti-Virus application and Software Firewall. Otherwise a system conflict will occur and this also lessens overall online protection!
  • Keep your system updated- Microsoft releases patches for Windows and other products regularly:
  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    • Click once on the Security tab
    • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware - Download it from here
The tutorial on how to use MBAM is located here
  • Install WinPatrol - Download it from here
You can find information about how WinPatrol works here
  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.
    Download it from here
The tutorial on how to use Spyware Blaster is located here
  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Follow this list and the potential for your computer becoming infected again will reduce dramatically. Any questions feel free to ask OK!

Hello,

I just wanted to thank you for you expertise and willingness to help me figure out my computer problems. I have followed all of your advice and put all those programs on both computers. So hopefully you won't hear from me again.

Keep up the good work,
