Google redirection and slow computer/ intenet

Unread postby Syre » July 29th, 2009, 9:56 pm

First, thanks for having this site available. I am running Windows XP on the machine with the issue. My issue started simply with Google being redirected every time I clicked a link. After that, I realized that my computer was running slower. I did some research and found that the most likely cause was malware. So I tried to download MalwareBytes, only, the site wouldn't open. So I downloaded the installer to another computer and sent it to this one. The program will not open. More research. I installed SDFix and ran that according to the directions, then tried to run MalwareBytes again. Still nothing. More research later, I find out about HijackThis and this forum and here I be. Here is my HJT Log:

Hi Syre

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
alternate download link 1
alternate download link 2
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
  • MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
  • On the Scanner tab:
    • Make sure the "Perform Full Scan" option is selected.
    • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
  • Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below)
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

  • Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<< will be maximized) and info.txt (<< will be minimized)

Post:

- mbam log
- rsit logs (taken after mbam run)

NOTE: If you can't run mbam, rename its executable and it should run.

Sorry, the only thing I left out in my message above was that I renamed the executable for mbam and it still didn't run. So basically you just told me to do the same thing I already did with no results. If you had read my issue, instead of copy-and-pasting a standard fix and customizing it by adding my name at the top, you'd know that you weren't helping me.

In the mean time, while I was waiting for a reply- there is something to be said for impatience here- I figured out what the problem was and had to run a bootable anti-virus scanner which I got from http://www.freedrweb.com/livecd/. After running the program, malwarebytes is now working and my computer is all better.

So thanks for wasting my time.

First of all, I do know what I am doing.

Secondly, this forum is run by volunteers so you can't expect anything like instant reply.

Those instructions work for most with same infection that you have/had. If they didn't work for you, you could have told me that instead of trying something on your own when I would have given you some other instructions.

So blaming a volunteer just because of you didn't want to keep your helper informed doesn't really help anyone.

Like I said, if you had rad my original post, you would have been aware that I had tried unsuccessfully to use malwarebytes. Also, there was no blame involved. I am well aware that the problems I have with my computer have absolutely nothing to do with anyone else. Further more, not once did I accuse anyone of ignorance, what I accused was of not reading the post and replying with a standard fix that anyone with any level of computer savvy would have done first, instinctively.

I didn't reply with standard post because I told you to rename mbam executable.

So it was tailored for your situation and no way a standard post as it is the thing which should be done next if mbam doesn't run by default.

Anyway as problem seems to be resolved, this thread is closed.
