Good evening Wingman - Proceeding well. - Here is the follow-up:

1. no particular problems evidenced ( I believe that I am still having problems with my cursor jumping, but this is a bit quasi- long-standing intermittent. I t would be a great area to solve, as it causes a tremendous amount of frustration which is solved with simple cut and paste, but aggravating nonetheless .)

2. Removals were successful. The Israel Radio bar offered options of auto, custom or repair, so I selected simply auto. ... I also opted to try to get SmartDraw off the list since that is old. It was not located and may have been uninstalled earlier. There are a few traces here and there, probably from work stored. ... I thought I might inquire regarding the function of HP Customer Participation: this is something that I do not recognize. .....By and large, I do not use a lot of the programs, but these appeared to possibly be chunkier ones. I am not using an HP Printer since a staple landed inside, so this can also be removed - unless you have a trick for getting staples out!

5. The computer is behaving what one might call 'normally'. The system has not really been put through any hoops etc. - not too much in the way of challenges, rather light use. The data entry matter, the jumping cursor, is present to a moderate degree. More evaluation / time should be taken to assess the degree of this problem at the moment. Is it reduced? One hopes so.

Looking forward to our next communication.

I hope that I did this more or less correctly.

Please accept my vote of continuing thanks and thrill at being able to investigate this with your help, Wingman.

Hello wazowazo,
You've done really well so far... thanks for hanging there. :D

Let's continue...
Please read the instructions carefully, before executing and perform the following steps in the order given.
lf you have any questions about or problems, executing these instructions, <STOP> do not proceed, post back with the question or problem.

Step 1.
ATF Cleaner
Please download ATF Cleaner ... by Atribune. Alternate download site: here.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only!. It does not require any installation and uses minimal system resources.
It is set up to clean IE, FireFox and Opera, detecting the browsers you have and grays out the other(s).
  1. Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  2. Under Main choose: Select All
Recommend UNCHECKING COOKIES if you rely on system remembered passwords.
  3. Click the Empty Selected button.
      If you use Firefox browser
    • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All EXCEPT FIREFOX SAVED PASSWORDS
    • Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
      If you use Opera browser
    • Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All EXCEPT COOKIES AND SAVED PASSWORDS
    • Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your cookies and saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
  4. Reply OK to the total bytes removed...box, then click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Step 2.
Kaspersky Online Scanner.
Please go to Kaspersky Online Virus Scanner © Kaspersky Lab to perform an online antivirus scan.
  1. Click on the Image ...button.
  2. The program will launch and fill in the Information section ... on the left.
  3. Read the "Requirements and Limitations" then press... the Image ...button.
  4. The program will begin downloading the latest program and definition files.
It takes a while... please be patient and let it finish.
  5. Once the files have been downloaded, click on the Image ...button.
In the scan settings make sure the following are selected:
    • Detect malicious programs of the following categories:
      Viruses, Worms, Trojan Horses, Rootkits
Spyware, Adware, Dialers and other potentially dangerous programs
    • Scan compound files (doesn't apply to the File scan area):
      Archives
      Mail databases
By default the above items should already be checked.
    • Click the Image ...button, if you made any changes.
  6. Now under the Scan section on the left:
      Select My Computer
  7. The program will start and scan your system. This will run for a while, be patient... let it run.
Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
  8. Open Notepad... copy and paste the results into the open Notepad window.
  9. Save the Notepad file as "Kas.txt" ... save it to your desktop.
  10. Copy and paste the Kas.txt file in your next reply.

Step 4.
Please include in your next reply:
  1. Any problem executing the instructions?
  2. ATF Cleaner run, no problems?
  3. Kas.txt file contents
  4. Except for the jumping mouse... how is the computer behaving?
Thanks,
Wingman

Hello Wingman,

Well, I have proceeded with the instructions and am pleased to have little to report (excepting the jumping cursor (no comment)).

1. Problems - not really. Only that I ran the Kaspersky doubly, once with Norton in the background and on-line, and once with the Norton A-V disabled and off-line (to be more protected meanwhile). There was not an inclusion in the instructions received from you as to how to proceed when I saw the recommendation to turn off all anti-viral programs, so therefore I operated it this way. ... Also, since the Viruses, worms etc box on this program was appearing clouded out, I thought that that box was not checked. That is another reason the it was rerun. In the meantime, I verified and, from the program notes, it appears that these are indeed included in the checking, always. And cannot be turned off. Which is why the option box appeared clouded out. [each run was around a couple of hours].

2. ATF Cleaner - removed 15.4 MB from the Main, and 800,000 KB from the FIrefox - run was okay. (Hope my passwords are still there, as per instructions!)

3. Kas.txt file contents : completely blank ..... :

Run 1 online w/ Norton-
No Malware has been detected
Run 2 offline w/o Norton-
No Malware has been detected

4. The behaviour of the computer is a - O K.
Thank you, Wingman.

What's our next move?

I am certainly glad to see that we have not turned up anything.
BTW, do you have any clue about the jumping cursor? What could be the source of this problem?

Excuse me for bothering you with my problems.
I eagerly await your response.

An extra special thanks to you.

Hello wazowazo,
Good job! :D

There are a few things you could look at for the "jumping cursor" issue. First, I must let you know:
Because Malware Removal forum deals with removing malware. You should try a PC troubleshooting forum. Links for some are provided below.
These sites have a variety of experts, that are better equipped to investigate and resolve these kinds of issues.
Registration is free, it only takes a few minutes. :)
The Elder Geek on Windows
BleepingComputer.com
WhattheTech...formerly TomCoyote

Things you could look into:
Based on some programs you have installed, it appears you are using a Toshiba laptop. Are you using an "external" mouse or
are you using the Touchpad?

If you ARE USING an EXTERNAL MOUSE...
Try disabling the Touchpad... go to Control Panel >Mouse > see if there are any "options" to disable the Touchpad.
I also noticed you have a program installed called "TouchPad On/Off Utility"...
Sounds like this could be used to turn off the Touchpad... which you might be "activating" by your palm, thumbs or even close proximity, while typing.

If you are NOT USING an EXTERNAL MOUSE, then...
Go to Control Panel > Mouse and see if the following options are being used. Change 1 option at a time and see if there is any difference.
(These options may or may not be present, depending on your Touchpad driver)
Snap To - uncheck it...
Hide pointer while typing - uncheck it...
Disable Tapping while Typing - check it...
Palm check sensitivity - lower it...
Touchpad sensitivity - lower it...

If your laptop has a "Trackstick"... the small "button" on the keyboard, used to move the mouse cursor... see if there is an option for disabling it... you may be
inadvertently touching it when you type.

If none of these "options" resolve your problem... you may have to check for the latest drivers for the Touchpad... specific to your machine. The sites/links provided above can
instruct you on obtaining these driver updates.

Please let me know what happened with any of these suggestions. Either way... there are still some items we need to address... so please stay with me. :)

Thanks,
Wingman

3 Day Bump
Hello... wazowazo,
It has been 3 or more days since my last post to you.
  • Do you still need help with this problem?
  • Do you need more time?
  • Are you having problems understanding or following my instructions?
Just let me know what's going on otherwise...

I had the chance to look into these ideas on apreliminary basis only.

I will be pursuing them more within the next few days.

Is there a way to not get bumped if I am held up and do not get back as quickly as one wishes, say, in four days rather than three?

In continuing appreciation of your inputs,

Further details later today, I hope ...

Hi wazowazo,
If you know that you are going to be delayed a while and will not be able to respond, within 3 days or more... just let me know.
Normal policy is, if there has been no response in 5 days, the topic will be closed.
If we are made aware there will be a delay... we understand and will monitor the topic.

Another note on the jumping cursor issue. If this is occurring when online...
There are compatibility issues with this site (and others) and IE8, and those issues result in the jumping cursor problem.

This problem can be resolved by:
Starting IE8
Clicking on Tools
Selecting "Compatibility View Settings."
Then it is only necessary to click on the "Add" button and this site will be listed in IE8 as a site that needs to be viewed with IE7 settings rather than utilizing the additional features in IE8.
This can be done with any web site where you experience the "jumping cursor" syndrome.

I'll stay with you... :)

Hi wazowazo,
It's been a while since you last posted. I understand you, said you may be delayed in responding but I need to know what's going on.
Have you tried any of the recommendations presented?
How is the computer running?
There are still some items we need to "take care of" before we are finished.

Changes in MRU Policy...
3 Day - No Response
It has been 2 days since my last post to you.
  • Do you still need help with this problem?
  • Do you need more time?
  • Are you having problems understanding or following my instructions?
Just let me know what's going on otherwise...
After 24 hrs., if you have not replied to this thread... it will be closed!
Thanks,
Wingman

Due to a lack of response, this topic is now closed.

If you still require help, please open a new thread in the Infected? Virus, malware, adware, ransomware, oh my! forum, include a fresh FRST log, and wait for a new helper.
