Unread postby andersonchr440 » January 10th, 2006, 10:21 pm

2 problems- 1) Internet security settings keep getting changed to Low for some reason. 2) Desktop hijack

Ran Sbybot; Ran Adaware; Ran Trojanhunter. They find the same DSO exploit every time, delete them, then they pop back up on reboot. Ran Hijackthis. Here is the log.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Hi andersonchr440, :)

Welcome to MRU.
:D
C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\Tmas\Tmas.exe
C:\Program Files\Symantec AntiVirus\Rtvscan.exe

You are running two antivirus programs at the same time, namely: Symantec and TrendMicdro. This is not a good practice as they would be conflicting with each other, leaving the computer vulnerable. Please decide on one of them and go to Start>Control Panel>Add/Remove programs to uninstall the other one.

==============================================

You are also using an old version of Java. Sun's Java is sometimes updated in order to eliminate the exploitation of perceived vulnerabilities in an existing version. For this reason, it's extremely important that you keep the program up to date, and also remove the older more vulnerable versions from your system. The most current version of Sun Java is: Java Runtime Environment Version 5.0 Update 6 . To check your version to see if it is the latest version, Please go to this link to verify your version to get the updates needed:
http://www.java.com/en/download/windows_automatic.jsp

You'll need to use IE and allow ActiveX for this update. Follow the instructions on that page to verify Your Java software

Or you can get the manual download here:
http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp

Once you have installed the latest update, please go to Add/Remove Programs and remove all older instances of Java listed there.
========================================
You have a security lowering trojan. This is the evidence:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [links] links.exe

Please set your system to show all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

Let's run some scans now.

===============================================

Clean temporary files:

1. Go > start > run and type cleanmgr and click OK
2. Scan your system for files to remove.
3. Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files and Recycle Bin are the only things checked.
4. Click OK to remove those files.
5. Click Yes to confirm deletion.

============================================
You may already have some of these but please make sure that they are updated and configured as below:

Please download the free Ad-Aware SE and install it. If you already have Ad-Aware SE, please configure it as indicated below. If you have a previous version of Ad-Aware, please uninstall your current version and install the newest version SE 1.06.

1) Run Ad-Aware, and click Check for updates now.

2) Select Configurations (click the Gear wheel at the top) as follows:

  • General Button > Safety & Settings: Check (Green) all three.
  • Tweak Button > Cleaning Engine > UNcheck "Always try to unload modules before deletion".

Click Proceed.

3) To start the scan, Click > "Scan Now" at left

  • Deselect "Search for negligible risk entries" as negligible risk entries (MRU's) are not considered to be a threat.
  • Select "Search for low-risk threats"
  • Select "Perform full system scan"
  • Click Next
4) When the scan has completed, select Next.

  • In the Scanning Results window, select the "Critical Objects" tab.
  • Right-click on the screen and choose "Select all objects"
  • Click Next to remove the infections found, and click OK to the prompt.
  • Restart the computer.

=========================================

Download, update and run Spybot

Spybot S & D

Remember to "immunize" after updating so that the latest definitions can be enabled.

a. In the Menu Bar at the top of the Spybot window you will see 'Mode'. Make certain that 'default mode' has a check mark beside it.
b. Close ALL windows except Spybot S&D
c. Click the button to 'Search for Updates' then download and install the Updates. Remember to "immunize"after every update.
d. Next click the button 'Check for Problems'
e. When Spybot is complete, it will be showing RED entries, BLACK entries and GREEN entries in the window.
f. Make sure that there is a check mark beside all of the RED entries ONLY.
g. Choose Fix Selected Problems and allow Spybot to fix the RED entries.

If it has trouble removing any spyware, you will get a message window, asking if it would be ok to run Spybot - S&D on the next reboot before any other applications start running. You should reply Yes to this. The next time you start Windows, Spybot will run automatically and fix any of the programs it could not fix previously.

At this point you will be presented with the list of found entries again, but now there will be large green checkmarks next to the items that Spybot - S&D was able to remove. The ones that are still checked but do not have the large green checkmark next to them will be fixed on the next reboot of windows.

h. REBOOT to complete the scan and clear memory.

===========================================

Download and install Ewido Anti-Malware

During the installation, uncheck the following under Additional Options:
Install background guard
Install scan via context menu

Check for updates but do not run it yet.

===========================================
Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
Look in here for more information.

===========================================
Now, run HijackThis. Close all windows and browsers except HijackThis.
Go to Config > Misc tools
Click on Delete a File On Reboot
Click once on the file below to select it:
C:\WINDOWS\links.exe
Click on the Back button to exit Process Manager

Now, back at the main screen of HijackThis, click on Scan and put a check in front of the following

O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {BA52B914-B692-46c4-B683-905236F6F655} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [links] links.exe

Click on "Fix checked". Exit HijackThis but stay in Safe Mode.

==========================================

Run Ewido.
Click on Scanner
Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean files, click OK
When it asks if you want to clean the first file, put a checkmark in the lower left corner of the box that says 'Perform action with all infections' then choose clean and click OK.
Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report - click it.
Save the report.txt file to your desktop.

Now close ewido security suite.

Warning: While the scan is in progress, DO NOT open any folders or the Windows Control Panel !!

===========================================

Restart your computer in Normal Mode

===========================================

Run Panda's ActiveScan from here and perform a full system scan.
- Once you are on the Panda site click the "Scan your PC" button
- A new window will open...click the big "Check Now" button
- Enter your Country
- Enter your State/Province
- Enter your e-mail address and click send
- Select either Home User or Company
- Click the big Scan Now button
- If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
- It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It will take a couple minutes)
- Click on "Local Disks" to start the scan
- When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.
===========================================

Post a new HijackThis log, Ewido log and the result of the Panda onlin scan please.

Hi Andersonchr449,

Please do this:

Run HJT and click on Open the Misc Tools section.
In the next window, click on Open Uninstall Manager…
In the final window, click on Save list... and save it to your Desktop.
Copy and paste this file: uninstall_list.txt into your next reply.

Hi andersonchr44, :)

There is still some evidence of Smitfraud in the logs. :( We'll need to run the updated fix.

Please read carefully and then print these instructions so that you'll have access to them later when you are in Safe Mode.

Download SmitRem.exe. Once the computer is free of the infection, you can delete the folder and empty the recycle bin.

Double click on the file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop. Do not run it yet.. If you already have it, please delete that because it's probably an older version. It has recently been updated.

=================================================
Uninstall the unwanted programs

Please read this about Viewpoint and Viewpoint Manager.
I suggest you remove the program now. Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs if present.
Viewpoint
Viewpoint Manager
Viewpoint Media Player

=================================================
Set windows to [url=http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2002092715262339?Open&src=ent&docid=2002092514302348&nsf=ent-security.nsf&view=docid&dtype=corp&prod=Symantec%20AntiVirus%20Corporate%20Edition&ver=8.x&osv=&osv_lvl=]Show Hidden Files
[/url]
=================================================

Disable any realtime scanners like TrojoanHunter Guard, MS Antispyware Beta, Ewido Guard, Spybot Teatimer, etc. so that they will not interfere with the fix. If you need help, please click here . It's important that you re-enable them later.

=================================================
Please restart you computer in Safe Mode. You already know how to do that.
=================================================

Now, run HijackThis. Close all windows and browsers except HijackThis.
Go to Config > Misc tools
Click on Delete a File On Reboot
Click once on the file below to select it:
C:\WINDOWS\warnhp.html
Click on the Back button to exit Process Manager

Now, back at the main screen of HijackThis, click on Scan and put a check in front of the following:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ViewMgr] C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr.exe

Click on "Fix checked". Exit HJT but stay in Safe Mode.

==================================================
Using Windows Explorer, navigate and delete the following folders in bold, if found:

C:\Program Files\Viewpoint
C:\Program Files\Viewpoint Manager
C:\Program Files\Viewpoint Media Player

==================================================
Still in Safe Mode, run SmitRem RunThis.bat.

Open the smitRem Folder, then double-click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen. Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.
The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply. Stay on Safe Mode.

==============================================
In Safe Mode

Navigate to C:\Windows\Prefetch
Click Edit, click Select All, press the DELETE key, and then click Yes to confirm that you want to send all the items to the Recycle Bin.

Navigate to C:\Windows\Temp
Click Edit, click Select All, press the DELETE key, and then click Yes to confirm that you want to send all the items to the Recycle Bin.

Navigate to C:\Documents and Settings\(EVERY LISTED USER)\Local Settings\Temp
Click Edit, click Select All, press the DELETE key, and then click Yes to confirm that you want to send all the items to the Recycle Bin.

Clean out your Temporary Internet files. Proceed like this:

" Quit Internet Explorer and quit any instances of Windows Explorer.
" Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Internet Options.
" On the General tab, click Delete Files under Temporary Internet Files.
" In the Delete Files dialog box, click to select the Delete all offline content check box , and then click OK.
" On the General tab, click Delete Cookies under Temporary Internet Files, and then click OK.
" Click on the Programs tab then click the Reset Web Settings button. Click Apply then OK.
" Click OK.

Clear the Java cache...

Control Panel > Java -or- Java Plugin > General tab > Temporary Internet Files > Delete Files:
Checkmark all 3 options
Click "OK"

If those settings are different, the "Clear Cache" option might be under the "Cache" tab instead.

EMPTY YOUR RECYCLE BIN. Stay in Safe Mode

==============================================

Run Ewido in Safe Mode. Save the report.

==============================================

Restart your computer in Normal Mode

=============================================

Run Adaware. Reboot to clear the memory.

=============================================

Go to Start>Control Panel > Internet Options. Click on the Programs tab then
click the "Reset Web Settings" button. Click Apply then OK.

While still in Control panel, next go to Display. Click on the "Desktop" tab then click
the "Customize Desktop" button. Click on the "Web" tab. Under "Web Pages" you
should see an entry checked called something like "Security info" or similar.
If it is there, select that entry and click the "Delete" button. Click OK
then Apply and OK.

=============================================

Run Panda online scan again.

=============================================

Please post the following and let me know how the computer is running.
Smitfiles.txt

HijackThis Log

If we aren't there yet we are awfully close. Browser has full functionality. No visible issues whatsoever. Here are the logs:

Hi Andersonchr44, :)

We are almost there. :) You are free of the SmitFraud. There are a couple of items that I am not too happy about in the Panda scan results, but I think we'll be able to clean them too.

Using Windows Explorer, navigate and delete the folder in bold:
C:\Documents and Settings\Amy Anderson\Start Menu\SideStep.lnk

Please run Notepad and paste the following text inside the Code box into a new file: It's important that you use notepad, not wordpad.

Code: Select all
attrib -r -h -s C:\WINDOWS\games.exe
del C:\WINDOWS\games.exe
attrib -r -h -s C:\WINDOWS\180ax.log
del C:\WINDOWS\180ax.log

Save the file to the desktop as remove.bat and make sure the "Save as Type" field says "All Files". Then please go to the desktop and double-click on remove.bat.

Restart your computer.

Run Panda again.

Post a fresh HijackThis log and the Panda scan results.

Here are the logs: pandascan still has something on it. C:\WINDOWS\180axau.dat is still hanging around and I cut and pasted that thing exactly as it was on the screen into the "remove file." Also, C:\Documents and Settings\Amy Anderson\Start Menu\SideStep.lnk has been deleted from the C: drive, but it still appears here. Sidestep is a travel search engine that we use for airline fares...so I recognize it...but that doesn't mean anything. Tell me if I still need to do more.

cma.

Hi Andersonchr440 :)

Thank you for the logs. :) I'll go through them and let you know probably tomorrow. Indeed, SideStep is an Internet Explorer toolbar that provides travel price comparison service. The program sends the url you are browsing, and the words you were searching for to its controlling server and generates popup ads when it detects you using another site's travel features.

I cannot see it in your HijackThis log. Perhaps you can do this for me:

Open HijackThis and go into the Config option when you start HijackThis, and then click on the Misc Tools button . You will then click on the button labeled "Generate StartupList Log". Once you click that button, the program will automatically open up a notepad filled with the Startup items from your computer. Copy and paste the list here please.

Please download, update and run the following programs:

Spybot S & D

Remember to "immunize" after updating so that the latest definitions can be enabled.

a. In the Menu Bar at the top of the Spybot window you will see 'Mode'. Make certain that 'default mode' has a check mark beside it.
b. Close ALL windows except Spybot S&D
c. Click the button to 'Search for Updates' then download and install the Updates.
Next click the button 'Check for Problems'
When Spybot is complete, it will be showing RED entries, BLACK entries and GREEN entries in the window.
Make sure that there is a check mark beside all of the RED entries ONLY.

Please post your Panda result and the HijackThis log to make sure.
