Very, very slow computer (sometimes)

The computer from which I'm sending this, a Dell Inspiron 1200, was a gift to me from its former owner. His son, a teenager, was its principal user. I believe. The former owner disavowed any knowledge of the sites that the machine had visited, and suggested that I worry about viruses and malware. I've installed Spybot Search and Destroy, and Avira's free antivirus, and they report no problems. But on occasion -- unpredictably -- the machine is just amazingly slow.
