csrss.exe has taken over my computer (2nd post)

Unread postby wkdickinson » July 18th, 2009, 11:47 pm

First let me say that I am sorry I did not read the rules before I post my first post and attached a file to it :( - dumb me!

Anyway, I am going try again to do as instructed. Mr computer has been taken over by csrss.exe, which uses 90 to 1005 of the CPU time. when this happens you can reboot ane the performance will be acceptable for awhile but before long csrss.exe is back and hiving it's way with the CPU. Following is the HijackThis log - any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Unread postby askey127 » July 22nd, 2009, 5:52 am

wkdickinson,
I am giving you quite a lot to do here, but you can handle it. Just one step at a time.
If any questions, feel free to post them.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Disable Ad-Aware Service
This will work for either version 2007 or 2008
Go to Start, Run OR Start, Programs, Accessories, Command Prompt and type services.msc and click OK.
Under the Extended Tab, find one of these services, depending on which version you have:
Ad-Aware 2007 Service or Lavasoft Ad-Aware Service
Click once on the service to highlight it.
Right-Click on the service. Click on Properties
Select the General tab.
Next to Service Status, click Stop.
Click the Arrow-down tab on the right-hand side of the Start-up Type box.
From the drop-down menu, click on Disabled
Click Apply , then OK
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove Registry items with HighjackThis. Start HijackThis.
Click Do System Scan Only. When the Scan is complete, Check the following entries:
(Some of these lines may be missing)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Adobe Reader Speed Launcher] "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 8.0\Reader\Reader_sl.exe"
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Ad-Watch] "C:\Program Files\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware\AAWTray.exe"

Make sure Every other window except HJT is closed (No other tabs showing in the bottom tray), and Click Fix Checked
Click the "X" in the upper right corner of the HiJackThis window to close it.
----------------------------------------------------------
Remove Program(s) with CCleaner
Open CCleaner. In the Left Pane, click Tools. Verify that Uninstall is highlighted in color, or click on it.
Click and Highlight the Following Programs, one at a time, and click the Run Uninstaller button for each one.
Wait for completion of each one before highlighting and Uninstalling the next.

Uniblue RegistryBooster 2009
Uniblue RegistryBooster 2009
RegCure 1.6.0.0
Logitech Desktop Messenger
Java(TM) 6 Update 3
Java(TM) 6 Update 7
BroadJump Client Foundation
Ask.com Toolbar
Adobe Reader 8.1.4

Take extra care in answering questions posed by any Uninstaller. Some questions may be worded to deceive you into Keeping the program.
----------------------------------------------------------
Update your Acrobat/Reader Setup
The older versions of Adobe Acrobat may have a "broken" updater that never stops trying to update. It can seriously slow down or hang a PC.
Older versions of Acrobat and Reader are also vulnerable to various pdf exploits.
You can keep your older, full version of Adobe Acrobat 6, but you should use it for editing and creation of pdf's only, NOT for opening pdf's on the net.
You can still call Adobe Acrobat 6 from Start, All Programs
--------------------------------------------------------
You should download and install the newest version of the free Adobe Reader for reading pdf files, due to the vulnerabilities in earlier versions.
All versions numbered lower than 9.1 are vulnerable.
  • Go here and click on AdbeRdr910_en_US.exe to download the latest version of Adobe Acrobat Reader.
  • Save this file to your desktop and run it to install the latest version of Adobe Reader.

-----------------------------------------------------------
REBOOT Your Machine
-----------------------------------------------
Run the RSIT Scanner
Please download the Scanner and save it to your desktop. The icon will be named RSIT.exe
Doubleclick the RSIT icon.
When the scan is complete, two text files will open
log.txt <- this one will be maximized
info.txt <- this one will be minimized
( Default location for both files is C:\rsit\ )
Copy/Paste the contents of both log.txt and info.txt into your next post please. Use two posts if you prefer.

askey127,

I performed all of the tasks you insturcted me to except for one. I could not uninstall the Ask.com Toolbar. Each time I tried it would get maybe 80% and then I would get the following "error warning" - "Error 1720. There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A script required for this install to complete could not be run. Contact your support personnel or package vendor. custom action vb_IS_FF_OPEN_UNINSTALL script error: File not found Line 87, Column 2,

Unread postby askey127 » July 22nd, 2009, 3:45 pm

wkdickinson,
Good so far.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Folder Deletion
In Windows Explorer (My Computer), navigate to each folder shown below, highlight each folder in turn shown in red, if found, and press Delete.

C:\Program Files\Ask.com\ <== this folder only
C:\Program Files\Logitech\Desktop Messenger\ <== this folder only

You may have to first open the folder, choose View, Details, and delete all the underlying files and folders before an entire folder can be deleted.
If you need to delete underlying files in a folder and are unable to do so:
Right click the file set for deletion, and check Properties to see if it's read-only. Uncheck the read-only box, click Apply and OK. Then retry Delete.
If a message pops up saying "File in use", or something like that,, note the name of the file, hit Ctrl-Alt-Delete and look under the Processes tab. If the exact filename is in there, highlight it and click End Process, then retry Delete.
Please Note the name and location of any item you cannot delete, or any file not found.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Set Options in CCleaner and run Cleaning Scan.
Open CCleaner.
Do not use the Registry block to clean anything with this program. It is for experts only and it is risky.
(As a general rule, don't ever use a registry cleaner or "registry optimizer" of any kind on your machine).
  • Select Cleaner Settings.
  • Check All the items in Internet Explorer and Windows Explorer.
  • In the System Section, check Empty Recycle Bin, Temporary Files, Clipboard, Memory Dumps, and ChkDsk File fragments.
  • In the Advanced section, don't have anything checked.
  • Click on the Options block on the left. Select Advanced.
Uncheck Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours.
  • Set Cookie Retention.
Click on the Options block on the left, then choose Cookies.
Under the Cookies to delete pane, highlight any cookies you would like to retain permanently (those companies or sites with which you regularly visit or do business), and click the right arrow > to move them to the Cookies to keep pane.
  • Run Cleaning Scan. Click on the Cleaner block on the left. Choose the Windows tab.
Click the Run Cleaner button. This process could take a while. When CCleaner shows how much has been removed, cleaning is finished.
Exit CCleaner by clicking on the X button in the upper right of the CCleaner window.
-----------------------------------------------------
Run an Online Kaspersky WebScan
  • Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.
  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
      Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  • Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Please post this log in your next reply.

wkdickinson,
You should studiously avoid any kind of Registry Cleaners in the future, and also avoid using the Registry button when you run CCleaner.

Make sure if you ever download another application, that you DO NOT EVER accept a checkbox for the ASK toolbar. Lots of programs offer it to get the income. Any program that forces you to accept it should be avoided.
CCleaner includes an ASK bar optional "checkbox" in its standard update.
The best way to download CCleaner and completely avoid the ASK bar is like this:
----------------------------------------------------------
Download and Install CCleaner
  • Download the CCleaner Installer from here . Choose the Slim version. You can save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on ccsetupXXX_slim.exe to start the installation of CCleaner. (XXX is the version number)
  • Click OK
  • Click Next
  • Click I agree
  • Click Next
  • Click Install
  • Once the installation has finished, click Finish
You can now delete the installer ccsetupxxx_slim.exe from your desktop.
-----------------------------------------------------------
We should reset your System Restore so that none of the older entries on your machine will return by accident.
Reset System Restore Points
  • Click Start > Help and Support
  • Click on ->Undo changes to your computer with System Restore.
  • Click Create A Restore Point then click Next. Give it a name it and then click Create, then Close.
  • Close Help and Support Center.
  • Click Start | Run and type Cleanmgr
  • Select (C: ) then click OK.
  • Click the More Options tab.
  • Click Clean Up in the System Restore Section.
This will remove all previous restore points except the newly created one.
This System Restore sequence is not to be done regularly, but only as a Special Case after the removal of malware.

I think you are good to go.

askey127,

I can't thank you enough, I sure was not looking forward to rebuilding my machine! Other than the tips you gave me are there other things I can do to keep from getting infected with malware? Is there software that actually works, like anti-virus and anti-spywear?

Thanks again!

wkdickinson,
I can recommend the following, but these are not necessarily the only "good" ones. This is a personal opinion only.
Run only ONE antvirus and ONE anti-spyware. Remove the rest.
Realize that there are HUNDREDS of fake anti-spyware programs out there. Many are posers from purveyors of PC infections.

Anti-Spyware:
-----------------
Malwarebytes AntiMalware , free and paid versions
http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam-download.php

AntiVirus:
-----------------
Avira Antivir, both free and paid versions
paid version - http://www.avira.com/en/solutions/home_home_office.html
all products, including free version - http://www.avira.com/en/download/index.html

ESET NOD32 , paid version only
http://www.eset.com/

Kaspersky, paid version only
http://www.kaspersky.com/

Other products useful for Security purposes that can be used in addition to the above
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Winpatrol : http://www.winpatrol.com/download.html

mvps HOSTS file - Read about it here: http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm

Askey127,

I hate to report this, but I t have the same problem I started with - csrss.exe is taking 99% of my CPU capacity. I am sitting here watching the "Processes" tab of Task Manager and it is popping back and forth between 60%, 70%, 79% and 99%. It shows the users name as "SYSTEM" and it will not allow me to stop the process.

I hope you can continue to help. I fear I see a hard drive rebuild in the near future.

Thanks!

wkdickinson,
Sorry it's not behaving properly. Let's see if we can find what's causing the problem.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Check Hard Disk For Errors
Press Start->Run, then type or copy/paste the following command into the box and press OK:
Code: Select all
cmd /c chkdsk c: |find /v "percent" >> "%userprofile%\desktop\checkhd.txt"
A blank command window will open on your desktop, then close in a few minutes. This is normal.
A file and icon named checkhd.txt should appear on your Desktop. Please post the contents of this file.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Download Blacklight from here:
http://www.f-secure.com/en_EMEA/security/security-lab/tools-and-services/blacklight/index.html
or
Link to it from the ftp site: ftp://ftp.f-secure.com/anti-virus/tools/fsbl.exe

Please save it to your desktop.

Go to Start-->Run, copy in the following text, and press Enter:
"%userprofile%\desktop\fsbl.exe" /expert

Accept the license agreement.
Click > scan, wait for it to finish, then click Close

There will be a log on your desktop with the name fsbl.xxxxxxx.log (the xxxxxxx stand for numbers).
Copy and paste the contents of this log into your next reply.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Post a New HiJackThis Log
Start HijackThis
Click Do System Scan and Save a Log File.
When the Scan is complete, select the whole log (Ctrl-A), copy and paste the log contents in a reply.

So we would like to see the contents of checkhd.txt, The Blacklight log, and a new HiJackThis log.

wkdickinson,
First, please highlight and delete the file checkhd.txt on your desktop.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Hard Disk Repair
IF Chkdsk has found any errors having to do with bad sectors in your file system, or if it reports that it cannot continue in Read-Only Mode, it needs to run a different sequence on reboot to do repairs. It can't repair the file system while Windows is running.
DO NOT START THIS SEQUENCE UNLESS YOU CAN DO WITHOUT THE MACHINE FOR AN HOUR OR TWO. It may not take very long , but it could, depending on the number of files and folders.
It will not relinquish control until it is done. You cannot stop it, and it would be a BIG mistake to pull the plug.

Go To Start, Run and type cmd
hit <Enter>
Type this black text into the command window at the prompt:
chkdsk c: /F <==notice the /F, with one space between c: and /F
hit <Enter>
You will get a message that the volume is locked, with a request to do the repair on Reboot.
Answer Y
Then type exit to close the Command window.
Go to Start, Turn Off Computer and choose Reboot
It will scan again when it boots up and make the repairs as the first part of the reboot process.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Now Check Hard Disk For Errors Again
Press Start->Run, then type or copy/paste the following command into the box and press OK:
Code: Select all
cmd /c chkdsk c: |find /v "percent" >> "%userprofile%\desktop\checkhd.txt"
A blank command window will open on your desktop, then close in a few minutes. This is normal.
A new file and icon named checkhd.txt should appear on your Desktop. Please post the contents of this file.
