Clean needed

Unread postby Biggles » July 4th, 2009, 4:01 pm

My PC needs a much prod with the hijackthis stick. It has been a few years since I have given it a check with hijackthis and now various problems are popping up.

I have run AVG and Spybot several times, emptied out the hard disk, cleaned out the temporary internet files and so on. I had problems when I tried to compress the old files using windows disk cleanup and when i tried to defrag the system. Specifically complete system crashes.

Even is there is nothing untoward I am sure there is at least a dozen various programs taking up precious memory and cpu time.

Any help would be much appreciated.

edit: hijackthis doesn't recognise xfire, it is a program which monitors all your games and game servers if you are not familiar with it. As far as I know it shouldn't be running at the moment, nor have I run it for over a year.

Hello & Welcome to Malware Removal

Please Subscribe to this Thread to get immediate notification of replies as soon as they are posted. To do this ensure Notify me when a reply is postedis ticked on the POST A REPLY page.

In the meantime please note the following:
  • Any recommendations made are for your computer problems only and should NOT be used on any other computer.
  • Please DO NOT run any scans/tools or other fixes unless I ask you to. This is very important for several reasons. Here are just two of them:
    1. The tools that we use are very powerful and can cause >>irreparable damage<< to your computer if not used correctly.
    2. Commercial scanners, for the most part can not completely remove some of the more "resistant" infections. This makes it much more difficult to get rid of completely.
  • If you get stuck or are unsure of something please ask for a further explanation, do not guess.
  • It will require more than one round to properly clean your system. Continue to respond to this thread until I give you the All Clean! even if symptoms seemingly abate.
Please note that the forum is very busy and if I don't hear from you within three days this thread will be closed.
If for any reason you cannot complete instructions within that time, that's fine, just put a post here so that I know you're still here. We get a lot of people who simply leave & if there is no contact for that amount of time I will have to assume you have abandoned your topic.

DDS
Download DDS.scr by sUBs from one of the following links & save it to your desktop.
Link 1
Link 2
  • Double-Click on dds.scr and a command window will appear. This is normal
  • Shortly after two logs will appear, DDS.txt & Attach.txt
  • A window will open instructing you save & post the logs
  • Save the logs to a convenient place such as your desktop
  • Copy the contents of both logs & post in your next reply
Gmer
Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here.
  • Double click the .exe file. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent
  • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan...click on NO

    Image
Click the image to enlarge it
  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following ...
    • Sections
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
    • Show All (don't miss this one)
  • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish
  • Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file which cannot be uploaded to your post
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and post it in reply
**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries

Note: Do not run any programs while Gmer is running.

Hi
Disable Spybot's TeaTimer 1.5 & 1.6
  • If you have version 1.5, right click the Spybot Icon in the system tray near the clock (looks like a blue/white calendar with a padlock symbol)
  • Click once on Resident Protection, then right click the Spybot icon again and make sure Resident Protection is now Unchecked. The Spybot icon in the System tray should now be now colorless
  • Go to Start > All Programs > Spybot - Search & Destroy > Spybot Search & Destroy
  • Click on Mode > Advanced Mode. When it prompts you, click Yes
  • On the left hand side, click on Tools
  • Check this box if it is not yet ticked: Resident
  • You will notice that Resident is now added under Tools. Click on Resident
  • Uncheck this box: Resident "TeaTimer" (Protection of over-all system settings) active
  • Exit Spybot Search & Destroy
  • Restart your computer for the changes to take effect
View Hidden Files & Folders Windows XP
To view Hidden Files & Folders do the following:
Click Start
Open My Computer
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options
Select the View Tab
Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option
Click Yes to confirm
Click OK

Upload Files for Scanning
Go to VirSCAN & upload the following File/s for scanning.
  • Copy & paste the following File & Path in the text box next to the Browse button.
    Code: Select all
    c:\windows\system32\dfalalno.jrc
  • Click Upload.
  • Wait for scans to finish then copy & paste the results into your next reply.
Following the instructions above do the same for:
c:\docume~1\ewanma~1\locals~1\temp\mdxgthkn.sys (you may need to expand this to the full file path ie, c:\documents and settings\ewanma???\localsettings\temp\mdxgthkn.sys

ComboFix
Download ComboFix from one of these locations (DO NOT download ComboFix from anywhere else but one of the provided links):
Link 1
Link 2

**IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop**

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
A guide to do this can be found here
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console
Image
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:
Image

  • Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the contents of C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply
A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may cause to your machine by running ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

Thanks for not closing the topic just yet, despite my absence this weekend.

I've done the spybot bit.

I am having trouble linking to the virSCAN website and I think it may be down. I will continue trying it. I thought I had better post to explain the delays in my reponse.

Thanks once again.

Hi
If your having trouble with VirSCAN (yes seems to be off line for the moment), try either of these sites. Just use one or the other, not both.

Upload Files for Scanning
Go to Virus Total or Jotti and upload the following File & Path for scanning.

For Virus Total
  1. Copy and paste the following File & Path in the text box next to the Browse button.
    Code: Select all
    c:\windows\system32\dfalalno.jrc

  2. Click Send File.
  3. Wait for scans to finish then copy & paste the results into your next reply.

For Jotti
  1. Copy and paste the following File & Path in the text box next to the Browse button.
    Code: Select all
    c:\windows\system32\dfalalno.jrc

  2. Click Submit.
  3. Wait for scans to finish then copy & paste the results into your next reply.

virSCAN seems to be up again now.

I tried the two files you pin-pointed with "Virus Total" and "Jotti". It couldn't find either file, so didn't scan them. Likewise when virSCAN came back online I tried both and it came back with an ERROR saying the files couldn't be found. Not sure about the first one, but I had empted my temporary internet files since the last logs.

As for how the system is running. It is pretty slow on log in and after a certain period of time new internet explorer windows won't open. Neither is a huge problem though. Mostly I use firefox.

Hi
FixService.bat
  • Open Notepad by clicking Start>Run, type in Notepad then click OK
  • Copy the contents of the Code Box below to Notepad
  • Name the file as FixServices.bat
  • Change the Save as Type to All Files
  • Save the file to your Desktop
Code: Select all
@echo off
sc stop DFALALNO
sc stop mdxgthkn
sc delete DFALALNO
sc delete mdxgthkn
del fixservices.bat
exit

Double click on the FixServices.bat. A window will open and close. This is normal.

Update Java Runtime
You are using an old version of Java. Sun's Java is sometimes updated in order to eliminate the exploitation of vulnerabilities in an existing version. For this reason, it's extremely important that you keep the program up to date, & also remove the older more vulnerable versions from your system. The most current version of Sun Java is: Java Runtime Environment Version 6 Update 14.
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Here
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 14. The Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications."
  • Click the Download button to the right
  • Select the Windows platform from the dropdown menu
  • Read the License Agreement and then check the box that says: "I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 with JavaFX License Agreement". Click on Continue. The page will refresh
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation & save the file to your desktop
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser
  • Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs & remove all older versions of Java
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE or Java(TM) 6) in the name
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u14-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version
  • After the install is complete, go into the Control Panel (using Classic View) and double-click the Java Icon. (looks like a coffee cup)
    • On the General tab, under Temporary Internet Files, click the Settings button
    • Next, click on the Delete Files button
    • There are two options in the window to clear the cache - Leave BOTH Checked
        Applications and Applets
        Trace and Log Files
    • Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE
    • Click OK to leave the Temporary Files Window
    • Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel
Kaspersky Online Scan
Do an online scan with >Kaspersky Online Scanner<
  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
      Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As...
  • Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button
  • Please post this log in your next reply

Hello Biggles
Last two logs are clean. What problems - if any - are you experiencing?

Remove Programs
Click Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs
Remove these programs by clicking Remove

Spybot - Search & Destroy 1.3

If some programs listed are not present, please do not panic

Update Adobe Reader
Recently there have been vunerabilities detected in older versions of Adobe Reader. It is strongly suggested that you update to the current version: Adobe Reader 9.1
You can download it from http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
If you already have Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition installed or do not wish to have it installed Uncheck the box which says Also Download Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition.

Adobe 9 is a large program and if you prefer a smaller program you can get Foxit 3 instead from http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php

Ok I have done those two things.

There aren't any huge problems left. It is still very slow on log in, I think there are excessive amounts of programs starting up at the beginnning. I have cleared some of the unnecessary ones out. If there any way to prevent some of the others starting when the computer does. Most of them are very rarely used, especially the photo viewers (LUMIX Simple Viewer, and Adobe Photo Downloader).

Thanks for all your help.

Hello Biggles
OK... first up have a look here: What to do if your Computer's running slowly. Follow the guide & see if this makes a difference. Once that's done post a fresh HijackThis log & we'll see what we can stop from running at start up.

Hi jmw,

I have done most of the things suggested. I did not want to change the host files (if it affects my computer) or the system restore points.
The defrag was a little difficult, it crashed twice while doing it. But did it without any problems the 3rd time.

StartupLite has helped a bit. I also deleted the BBC iplayer and 4 on demand, which I rarely used. They used to load at start up. It is quite a lot better. LUMIX simple viewer and Adobe Photo Downloader are still loading at the start though.

Hi
My apologies. I should have mentioned to untick the option to install the Foxit Toolbar if you installed Foxit. It is actually the Askbar run by Ask.com. You don't want that crapware on your system.

Remove Programs
Click Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs
Remove these programs by clicking Remove

Foxit Toolbar
Coupon Printer

If some programs listed are not present, please do not panic

The following can be fixed with HijackThis. All this will do is stop them from running at start up. It will not delete any files etc. Notes on some of the entries below so that you can decide for yourself whether you want them to run at start up or not.
Fix HiJackThis Entries
  • Open HiJackThis
  • Click on Do a system scan only
  • Place a checkmark next to these lines(if still present):

Re: Clean needed

It is certainly running a lot faster.

I think the symantec was a trial version of Norton Anti-Virus that came with the PC years ago when I got it. It was deleted pretty early. I used the link to remove any last treaces of it, and nothing shows up when I run a search for it, but oddly enough the entry for the LiveUpdate is still there:

O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-18\..\Run: [ALUAlert] C:\Program Files\Symantec\LiveUpdate\ALUNotify.exe (User 'SYSTEM')

I didn't want to delete it till I can get your opinion on why it would still be left?

Other than that thanks very mcuh for all your help.
