Zedo - popups but finding nothing thru scans...

Unread postby aug_aug » July 7th, 2009, 8:37 pm

Hello - I am seeing Zedo/casalmedia popups making their way through my firefox/ie8 popup blockers occasionally.

I have ran Microsoft Safe scan live one care, Kaspersky, Panda, AVG, and Malwarebytes, but nothing comes up at all.

Nothing is really happening per se, I would like to know if this is just a new version of popup, or if maybe here's something going on that has yet to be included in the anti-virus/malware databases. I would say in the last month I've had the popups happen from only a handful of sites.

Thanks in advance for your help, my HJT log is below:

Welcome to Malware Removal!
My name is Bjorn, known as Bv202 on this forum and I'll be happy to assist you with all your malware problems you have on your computer.

Before we start fixing your computer, there are a few points you need to know:
  • Please don't start a new topic, but reply on this one.
  • If you don't understand something, please ask!
  • If you find any new problems and/or details, please post them!
  • Please always try to reply within 3 days. If you know you won't be able to reply for any reason, please tell me so we don't close your thread.
  • As I'm still in training here at Malware Removal, all my posts needs to be checked by an expert first.

I see you're using Windows Vista as your Operating System. For all tools we use, please run them by right mouse clicking on the file and selecting Run as Administrator!

Remember: absence of symptoms does not mean your computer is clean!!
Please reply to this topic until I say your computer is clean.

I'm now researching your log. Once it's done, I'll be back to you.

In the meantime, please do this:
  • Open HijackThis.
  • Look under Misc tools.
  • Click on the Open Uninstall Manager... button.
  • Click on the Save list... button.
  • It will prompt you to save. Save this log in a convenient location. By default it's named uninstall_list.txt.
  • Notepad will open. Please copy and paste the contents of this log in your next reply.

Hey aug_aug

RSIT
  • Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<< will be maximized) and info.txt (<< will be minimized)

Question: Do you get these pop-ups at certain sites or do they pop-up randomly?

Hey aug_aug

You seem the have the business version of Windows Vista installed:
Microsoft® Windows Vista™ Business Service Pack 2

Unfortunately, we cannot help remove malware from any business related computer. Such systems may have specific modifications made which might hinder our tools, or worse, be removed by them. Also, if the computer is infected, there's a chance other computers it has been networked with (as is the case in many businesses) have been infected as well.

An extract taken from our rules:
In General, we do not help in cleaning business or corporate computers. There may be restrictions and modifications installed on such machines that could be damaged or altered by the actions we take to remove Malware. There may also be legal issues regarding any loss of business data that we do not wish to deal with.
If you ask for help and, unknown to us, it involves a business computer, you need to understand that any damages resulting from our advice are YOUR RESPONSIBILITY.

Because of the above reasons, it is suggested that you take this issue to your IT department instead.

If this is not a business computer, please tell me why you have the Business version of Vista installed. In that case, we can continue cleaning :)

This is not a business computer, and it's not on a network. I bought a refurbished Dell Optiplex for my own personal use, that's the OS that came with it. I always try and buy business-class hardware, it seems to last longer than the home pcs.

Thanks.

Hey aug_aug

You log files are looking clean. Do you still have these problems? If so, could you please give an example of a website on which these pop-ups appear?

GMER
  • Download GMER by GMER from one of the links below:
    Link1
    Link2
  • Unzip it to a folder on your desktop
  • Double click on gmer.exe to launch GMER
  • If asked, allow the gmer.sys driver load
  • If it warns you about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan, click OK
  • If you don't get a warning then
    • Click the rootkit tab
    • Click Scan
  • Once the scan has finished, click copy
  • Paste the log into notepad using Ctrl+V
  • Save it to your desktop as gmerrk.txt
  • Click on the >>> tab
  • This will open up the rest of the tabs for you
  • Click on the Autostart tab
  • Click on Scan
  • Once the scan has finished, click copy
  • Paste the log into notepad using Ctrl+V
  • Save it to your desktop as gmerautos.txt
  • Copy and paste the contents of gmerautos.txt and gmerrk.txt as a reply to this topic

Hey aug_aug

Please rename gmer.exe to aug.exe and try to run it again. If you get a bluescreen again, please tell me the error code/filename on it :)

Hey aug_aug

Everything looks still clean. We have done some deep scans now and I don't believe there is any malware present on your system.

Is it possible to give an example of a website where you get the pop-ups? :)

The next time it occurs I will definitely record which website I was at, could be valuable to you guys for research purposes.

Thanks for your help, I feel much better now.

Malware truly sucks, good luck!

Hey aug_aug

Update Java Runtime
You are using an old version of Java. Sun's Java is sometimes updated in order to eliminate the exploitation of vulnerabilities in an existing version. For this reason, it's extremely important that you keep the program up to date, and also remove the older more vulnerable versions from your system. The most current version of Sun Java is: Java Runtime Environment Version 6 Update 14.
  • Go to Java Site
  • Click to Download Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 14
  • In Platform box choose Windows.
  • Check the box to Accept License Agreement and click Continue.
  • Click on Windows Offline Installation, click on the link under it which says "jre-6u14-windows-i586-p.exe" and save the downloaded file to your desktop.
  • Go to Start => Control Panel => Add or Remove Programs
  • Uninstall all old versions of Java (Java 3 Runtime Environment, JRE or JSE)
  • Install the new version by running the newly-downloaded file with the java icon which will be at your desktop, and follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Reboot your computer

FIREWALL
I can't see any firewall in your HijackThis log, so i assume you use windows firewall.
Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. If you use the Windows Firewall you might think that's sufficient but it only controls one way of the traffic (inbound). Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.
It's preferable to install one of the suggested firewalls.

FREE FIREWALLS
  • Comodo
When installing, it will ask you to install Anti-Virus functionality. Please uncheck "install comodo antivirus (recommended)" unless you've uninstalled your AV. NEVER have 2 or more Anti-Virus programs on your computer; it will cause performance loss and/or other problems.
  • Online Armor
  • Sunbelt Kerio

Tutorial about Firewalls can be found here

A few tips to prevent malware:

Update your Antivirus programs and other security products regularly to avoid new threats that could infect your system.
You can use one of these sites to check if any updates are needed for your pc.
Secunia Software Inspector
F-secure Health Check

Make sure you enable Automatic Updates for your computer. You can set this in the control panel -> windows update.
An alternative way is to visit Microsoft often to get the latest updates for your computer:
http://www.update.microsoft.com

P2P Software
Peer to Peer (or P2P) software are the #1 source of malware infections. Even if the program itself is safe, the downloads you get with them can (and will) be infected. If you've used such software in the past, I recommend you to not use them anymore. If you're going to use them (again), please be very careful with your downloads.
Please read more about this here.

Here are some free programs I recommend that could help you improve your computer's security.

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
Download it from here. Click "Download" and you'll get redirected to download.com, where you can download the product. You can also buy this program, which gives you real-time protection against common malware. However, you can use the free program to scan and remove any infections found.

Install WinPatrol
Download it from here
Here you can find information about how WinPatrol works here

Install FireTrust SiteHound
You can find information and download it from here

Install MVPS Hosts File from here
The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer.
Find Tutorial here : http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm

Read some information here how to prevent Malware.
