Please Help with Trojan (with HiJack This Log)

Unread postby cdav1313 » July 13th, 2009, 4:22 pm

Hi and thank you in advance for your help.

I somehow got myslef a virus that has been redirecting my google searches and it was not allowing me to open my Malwarebytes software to get rid of the problem.

So I looked around for help and I was able to rename Malwarebytes and successfully run it. It found 13 different things wrong and deleted most of them. It said that those it was unable to delete it would delete on Startup.

So I restart the computer and I am still having a problem. I have rerun Malwarebytes several times and it always finds one "Trojan" that it claims will delete on restart but never does.

Also

During the course of all this aggrevation, I tried running chkdsk /f and when I restarted my computer to run it, it said my system was RAW and chkdsk couldn't run (It always used to identify my system as NTFS and ran problem free). I opened My Computer and right-clicked on C: and then Properties and it claimed my system was NTFS but upon restart, it still says RAW.

Sorry for the delay.

Hi, Welcome to the Malware Removal forum.
My name is Cypher, and I'll be helping you with your malware problems.

Before we begin...please note the following important guidelines.
  1. The instructions being given are for YOUR computer and system only!.
Using these instructions on a different computer can cause damage to that computer and possibly render it inoperable!
  2. Please, if you have questions about something...ASK, don't guess or assume.
  3. Please -only- post your problem at (1) one help site. Applying fixes from multiple help sites can cause problems.
  4. Please -only- reply to this thread, do not start another!
  5. Please do not run any other fix/removal tools unless instructed to do so!
  6. Print each set of instructions...if possible...your Internet connection might not be available during some fix processes.
  7. Please, continue responding, until I give you the "All Clean"

If you follow these guidelines, things should proceed smoothly. :)
I am currently reviewing your log and will return, as soon as possible, with your instructions.

Please post an Uninstall list.

  1. Open HijackThis.
  2. Click on the Open the Misc Tools section button.
  3. Look under System tools.
  4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager... button.
  5. Click on the Save list... button.
  6. It will prompt you to save. Save this log in a convenient location. By default it's named uninstall_list.txt.
  7. Notepad will open. Please post this log in your next reply.

Hi cdav1313
First thank you for your patience.
unfortunatly i have some bad news :(
Your machine in all likelihood has a corrupt Master Boot Record.
This could be caused by an outside agent (like a rootkit) writing to Dell's bootlloader, or it could be caused by a failing hard drive.
Unfortunately, Dell computers have a non-standard MBR because of the Restore partition.

Your machine itself should be considered in fairly serious danger of losing all its data.
So I would advise you to back up all important files immediately.
Be aware that the files you back up may be infected.

We can attempt to clean your machine, but there is no assurance that the machine will work afterward until the MBR is fixed.

The instructions for fixing the MBR for a Dell are here but are somewhat complex. (It involves burning a Dell Utility to a CD and booting from it). Making the CD can be done from another machine.
http://support.ap.dell.com/support/topi ... l=en&s=gen

You cannot fix an MBR problem with any reformat/reinstall, and an attempt to do a recovery from the Restore Partition will likely fail.

The normal method for fixing this kind of problem is to use the fixmbr command from the Recovery Console, but it won't work on a Dell.

Please post back and let me know what you decide to do.
