Download.Trojan in a System32 file

Unread postby mikybee » January 8th, 2006, 4:09 pm

I've got a problem with an infected file in the System32 of Windows.
File is browsela.dll and is infected with the Download.Trojan nastie.

Norton anti virus cannot delete/quratine/access file and keeps reporting evey five minutes

Files that it infects/creates are successfuly deleted by NAV but I cannot remove/clean browsela.dll.

Have tried the following with no success.

Norton scan in safe mode
A squared scanner
Delete on reboot
Manual deletion from command line prompt - reports file in use by windows
Ewido - found file but showed 'error in deleing file'

I have no 'safe' restore points on my disk

Go here and download win32delfkil.exe
http://users.telenet.be/marcvn/tools/win32delfkil.exe

Save it to your desktop.

Disconnect from the internet.

Close all open programs you are currently using.

Running this fix is going to restart the computer when it has finished.

Double click on win32delfkil.exe
It will create a new folder on your desktop named
win32delfkil

Open the win32delfkil folder and double click on fix.bat

When it runs it will close some important system programs making system look different. That's ok. When it has finished it will restart the computer.

Once back in Windows, find C:\windelf.txt

Open C:\windelf.txt and copy the contents into your next reply here.

Also please run hijackthis again and post the new log.

Thanks jwbirdsong

I've just done what youv'e said and all went well. Only thing is that the programme requires a manual reboot but other than that it seems to have run smoothly - haven't had a NAV report yet! (20 mins into running)

The postings below are windelft.txt and hijackthis logs. Is line 020 relevant? its missing on the second posting.

Given that I run a lot of internet security and that the Download.Trojan is an older trojan (2001), how did I get it on my PC in the first place?

If this is the one and it works, I owe you a lot of thanks - have a beer on me.

Only thing is that the programme requires a manual reboot

I knew that but had forgotten. It is new with the addition of browsela and I forgot to add it to thew speach.

Log looks great
Is line 020 relevant? its missing on the second posting.

It's suppose to be....

Open HijackThis and check the following items:
  • R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://uk.red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cust ... _side.html
  • R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://uk.red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cust ... yahoo.com/
  • R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
  • R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
  • O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AlcxMonitor] ALCXMNTR.EXE
  • O16 - DPF: {10000001-1001-1001-1000-000000000000} - file://C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\nKeogW.exe
  • O18 - Filter: text/html - (no CLSID) - (no file)
  • O18 - Filter: text/plain - (no CLSID) - (no file)
Close ALL browser and other windows and click fix checked.

Reboot and run this online virus scan: ActiveScan
  • Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
  • A new window will open...click the Check Now button
    - Enter your Country
    - Enter your State/Province
    - Enter your e-mail address and click send(*NOTE it's perfectly safe to do so..You will NOT be spammed from this)
    - Select either Home User or Company
  • Click the big Scan Now button
  • If/when you get a notice that Panda wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
  • It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
  • When download is complete, click on Local Disks to start the scan
  • When the scan completes, if anything is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location like your desktop.

Then post a new HijackThis and the Panda results in a reply here.

Oh and in regeards as to how you got infected; it just a guess but...
Microsoft has released its patch for the much publicised WMF vulnerability.
The patch is available for download here. Install it now - this vulnerability is too critical not to take seriously.

Many many many thanks jwbirdsong, my problem has been solved.

Ok, lets take a step a step back to the last question. "How did I get infected?"

I am genuinely interested in knowing how my pc got infected as I have a few users that think they know how to operate the system, and some who are thick as pig doo dah, please be honest - I am a grown up....

I thoght that my NAV and Internet Security stopped all that, Am I wrong? and what can I do to overcome it?

Thank you for your help, it seems to have of cleared the original problem but I am not so nieve to think that we do not visit porn sites at least once during out lifetime, but those of us who move on like being who we are.

Sorry about the delay. Could you post one final HijackThis log so we can verify all is well please. Assuming you are in fact clean here is my "Clean Computer/Prevention speech

Congratulations, your log is clean.

First, let's reset your hidden/system files and folders. System files are hidden for a reason and we don't want to have them openly available and susceptible to accidental deletion.

    * Click Start.
    * Open My Computer.
    * Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
    * Select the View tab.
    * Under the Hidden files and folders heading UNSELECT Show hidden files and folders.
    * CHECK the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
    * Click Yes to confirm.
    * Click OK.

Next, let's clean your restore points and set a new one:

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs from changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)
    1. Turn off System Restore.
      On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
      Click Properties.
      Click the System Restore tab.
      Check Turn off System Restore.
      Click Apply, and then click OK.

    2. Restart your computer.

    3. Turn ON System Restore.
      On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
      Click Properties.
      Click the System Restore tab.
      UN-Check Turn off System Restore.
      Click Apply, and then click OK.

System Restore will now be active again.

To reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing SpywareBlaster and SpyWareGuard and IE/Spyad.

SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard are by JavaCool and both are free programs. SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed and consumes no system resources. SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.

IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It is free.

More info and download is available at link in my signature
