I'll copy what I put in my topic at Dell support--someone suggested I do this here. I personally don't see anything alamring, but maybe one of you do.

My processor speed has been halved...never runs above 1.26 ghz or so. System Restore will -not- work anymore, regardless of running it from earlier points, in safe mode, after uninstalling programs. Norton Firewall will not enable, saying that I do not have permission to use it.

Before this, I had driver IRQL less than or equal blue screen errors that I fixed, as well as some issues with spyware and network connectivity. I inherited this computer from somewhat of an irresponsible PC user. The system is a 2400, XP Home. The only upgrade it's gotten that I know of is an ATI 9200.

Explorer.exe and svchost.exe processes always have a lot of mem usage, around 20,000k each. The page file usage with absolutely NOTHING running anywhere and with the Windows 98-lookin' "optimize for speed" memory settings, is at 346. It's as if the computer's draining all of its power doing nothing. And I'm out of ideas to fix it, save buying a new XP copy...and I'm not even sure that would work. I'm at a loss, honestly. Suggestions?

Thanks for posting the new logs.

Open a new text document. Copy and paste the contents of the following Quote Box into it.

REGEDIT4
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"KavSvc"=-

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components\{c21e43ff-3fbc-4d30-be30-7746febeed45}]
[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{c21e43ff-3fbc-4d30-be30-7746febeed45}]
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{c21e43ff-3fbc-4d30-be30-7746febeed45}]
[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\kfxstk]
[-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\kfxstkkg]

Save it to your Desktop. Filename: fixme.reg, Save as Type: All Files. Double click fixme.reg and confirm that you want to merge it into the registry. Reboot to complete the changes.

Make sure no files are hidden. To do this:

1. Click Start.
2. Open My Computer.
3. Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
4. Select the View Tab.
5. Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
6. Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
7. Click Yes to confirm.
8. Click OK.

Disconnect from the internet... unplug the cable to your modem if need be.

Close all open windows and programs, then start Killbox. Put a check next to "Delete on Reboot", then copy this line in "Full Path of File to Delete" box:

C:Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\programs\startup\CNIU.EXE

Click the red and white "Delete File" button.
Click "Yes" at the first prompt .
Click "No" at the second.

Repeat those same steps for each of these files one at a time:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\ZCQXOZ.DLL
C:\WINDOWS\System32\BTREHBB.DLL
C:\WINDOWS\System32\QAUOP.DLL
C:\WINDOWS\System32\WINUP2~1.DLL
C:\WINDOWS\System32\LVKAML.EXE
C:\WINDOWS\System32\QBMXRQQ.EXE
C:\WINDOWS\System32\YPKGB.DAT
C:\WINDOWS\System32\WMCONFIG.CPL
C:\WINDOWS\VJZRH.DLL

When you've finished, exit Killbox and reboot.

After rebooting, please post a new FindQoologic-Narrator log and a new HJT log.

Hmmm... persistent :P

Thinned the list out a bit though!

Might have to take a few cracks at this. So once again...

Disconnect from the internet... unplug the cable to your modem if need be.

Close all open windows and programs, then start Killbox. Put a check next to "Delete on Reboot", then copy this line in "Full

Path of File to Delete" box:

C:Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\programs\startup\CNIU.EXE

Click the red and white "Delete File" button.
Click "Yes" at the first prompt .
Click "No" at the second.

Repeat those same steps for each of these files one at a time:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\BTREHBB.DLL
C:\WINDOWS\System32\QAUOP.DLL
C:\WINDOWS\System32\LVKAML.EXE
C:\WINDOWS\System32\QBMXRQQ.EXE
C:\WINDOWS\System32\YPKGB.DAT

When you've finished, exit Killbox and reboot.

After rebooting, please post a new FindQoologic-Narrator log and a new HJT log.

Heh.. this infection can be a pain to remove :P

Lets try something different...

Scan with HijackThis, with all other browsers and windows closed, place a check besisde the following and Fix:

O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {BA52B914-B692-46c4-B683-905236F6F655} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [KavSvc] C:\WINDOWS\system32\lvkaml.exe
O16 - DPF: {A27AD582-5BE5-4C2D-82F0-48B24FE02040} - http://www.adshooter.com/pop_shooter/in ... Ssfitb.cab

You can fix the rest of the 016's if you wish. They will be reinstalled the next time you visit the websites.

These two lines:

O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions present
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present

If you did not put restrictions on IE or the Control Panel, or if you do not know why those are there, fix them as well.

Boot into Safe Mode. To do this:

1. Reboot your computer.
2. Tap the F8 button as your computer is booting to bring you to the Advanced Options Menu.
3. Select Safe Mode and press Enter.

Search for and rename this file:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\cniu.exe to cniu.old.

Reboot Windows normally, a window will probably open up asking you to choose a program to launch cniu.old, just close the window.

Post a new HijackThis log along with a new Qoologic log please.

On almost every page I visit, I'm now asked "Do you want to allow programs such as ActiveX controls and plug-ins to run?" It's kind of annoying. And sound never plays in Flash animations--that's not a new problem though.

Ok!

Run and scan withHijackThis. With all other browsers and windows closed, place a check beside the following and Fix:

O4 - Global Startup: cniu.old

Close all open windows and programs, then start Killbox. Put a check next to "Delete on Reboot", then copy this line in "Full Path of File to Delete" box:

C:Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\programs\startup\cniu.old

Click the red and white "Delete File" button.
Click "Yes" at the first prompt .
Click "No" at the second.

Repeat those same steps for each of these files one at a time:

C:\WINDOWS\VJZRH.DLL
C:\WINDOWS\System32\BTREHBB.DLL
C:\WINDOWS\System32\QAUOP.DLL
C:\WINDOWS\System32\LVKAML.EXE
C:\WINDOWS\System32\QBMXRQQ.EXE
C:\WINDOWS\System32\YPKGB.DAT

When you've finished, exit Killbox and reboot.

After rebooting, please post a new FindQoologic-Narrator log and a new HJT log.

I deleted those files myself in Windows. *shrug* Before that, I installed and ran several new helpful programs (i.e. a2, spyware doctor, CCleaner).

Nice work!. Both logs are CLEAN!

Please browse to the \Windows\Prefetch folder. Delete all the files inside the folder(don't delete the folder itself).

You may also run CCleaner if you wish. A note about CCleaner... it has been reported that CCleaner can, at times, mess things up. I'll point you in the direction of this thread. Be sure to read the CCleaner warning document that is attached to one of the posts in the thread. I myself have never had any problems reported back when using CCleaner. But in light of this new development with CCleaner, you may want to switch to a different program. A good alternative is CleanUp!. Once you've used whatever program it is you wish to lean up the Temp files and such, be sure to empty your Recycle Bin.

Now would be a good time to reset your System Restore Points. This will ensure a clean backup to fall upon if needed. To do this:

1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. Click the System Restore tab.
3. Check the "Turn off System Restore" or "Turn off System Restore on all drives"

Reboot your computer, follow the steps above, this time unchecking the "Turn off System Restore" and reboot.

Along with the programs you have installed already, you may want to take a look at SpywareBlaster, SpywareGuard, and IE-SPYAD. You can grab them from the links in my sig. The programs are free and can be updated so please remember to do so!

Installing these programs will go a long way in helping to prevent reinfection. It is, of course, no guarantee.

I would also recommend you install a Firewall as I never noticed one installed in your log. I'm sure you have heard of ZoneAlarm
. Hint, hint :P

You may also want to visit the links in my sig named Understanding Spyware and How'd I get Infected... some good information on those pages.

Now are you still getting the ActiveX warnings? If so, try resetting the Security level in IE to its default value in the Security tab of IE's Internet Options. Also try resetting the program to its defaults by pressing the Reset Web Settings button in the Programs tab.

Let me know how that goes if the ActiveX problem is still there. If it isn't then don't worry about it. :D

Remember to keep your protection programs updated, scan often and...

I fixed the ActiveX problem a bit ago. Thanks.

My processor speed still displays as being half, but things seem to be running faster. I will get that firewall--something hiding in my computer from before would allow me to enable my Norton one.

Well...thanks for your help, 'KotaGuy. It's certainly helpful, definitely considerate what you folks do here. I pray your campaign against malware keeps solid and true.

Thanks for the kind words! And I am glad I was able to resolve your issue for you.

Re your processor... have you tried resetting the BIOS to the factory defaults? An improper CPU speed reading is usually indicitive of something outside of Windows. Most likely in the BIOS... might be a jumper setting. Thats where I would start to troubleshoot it.

Other than that here are some Microsoft KB links you might find useful...
