Blank web page Hijacker

Unread postby Granny J » June 9th, 2009, 10:00 pm

Sorry for my ignorance, but thank you for the support. This is a new ball game for an old lady.
I have had a blank web page for approx. 8 weeks. It jumped in(as a complete white screen) as soon as I opened my homepage 'Mozilla Firefox'. I could only remove it by clicking on the Windows flag icon key which opened the Windows programme box and the lower browser plus the two tabs. I right clicked on the blank page which gave me two options, minimize or close. When I closed it that was it until the next opening of my homepage, then the same process. Eventually when I tried to open my internet homepage, an information box continually appears with the message Mozilla had crashed and to exit or restart. I could access Firefox in safe mode with Internet Explorer only. Then a weird white page came back and I managed to view the source and this was the address.
File:///C:Users/jolimet/AppData/Local/Tep/Magentic/Mag4356.htm - Original source
I couldn't find the actual data, but deleted Magentic prog (wallpapers)
My SiteHound has been blocked in fact all things on the browsers and the browsers have disappeared.
Cheers,
In hope, Granny J

Good Day GrannyJ and welcome to the forum :)

I am turtledove, and will be assisting you with your log.
If you still need assistance, please do the following:

*Print all instructions or Copy to Notepad for reference.
*Please note, unless I'm notified ahead of time, this topic will close if there is not a response in 5 Days.
*Place a link to this thread in your Favorites/Bookmarks for easily returning here.
*Please respond until I give the all clear, as absence of symptoms does NOT always mean Clean.
*If you can do the above all should go well.
*Please do not run any other tools/scans unless requested*
**Please be sure you have read the Notice about Peer to Peer at the top of this forum**
Link: viewtopic.php?f=11&t=33112

**As I am an Undergrad, my responses will be approved by an Expert/Teacher before I post to you; therefore it may take a tad bit more time to reply.
Thanks for your patience.

Since it has been some time since your above post, please post the following logs. I will go over the new logs and return as soon as possible.

Step 1
Please make an Uninstall list :
To access the Uninstall Manager, please do the following:

1. Start HijackThis
2. Click on the Config button
3. Click on the Misc Tools button
4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
5. Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file.
Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here on your next reply.

Step 2
Rerun HijackThis and Save the log.

Post the HijackThis and the Uninstall list using the Reply button.

Thank you

Re: Blank web page Hijacker FOR TURTLEDOVE

Unread postby Granny J » June 15th, 2009, 8:09 pm

Hello Turtledove, I thank you for a possible light of this very dark tunnel of mine. This has spoilt so much of my laptops progs. I hope I have done the tasks correctly. You must understand my dear,I do not always understand your computer terminology. So the simpler the better if you catch my drift. I don't know if you want to know, I had a message from PC Tools which I don't subcscribe to, telling me I had a low risk
Trojan-Dropper.SEHW32/Agent.HZTR (Norman). It wouldn't delete it cos I did not want to subscribe. I have bought so much anti viral products why they dont pick this up beats me. I realise this has nothing to do with Malware, just thought you might need to know all.
I have to inform you I will be away from the 17th June until the 26th. I cannot take my laptop with me on this trip, so please will you understand I still need help upon my return.
Sincerely yours,
Granny J

Hello Granny J,

Thank you, you did the logs just right. Thank you for the information your Spyware Doctor found. That is important for us to know.
Can you tell me which Anti Spyware programs you have paid for please?
You should run only one in real time, which your PC Tools Spyware Doctor does. This program does not catch viruses, only spyware type bad guys. See below.

Thank you for notice about your vacation.
Please post results from these instructions by 28th.

You also need a Real Time Anti Virus which Clam AV does not do.
*Copy these instructions or Print out for easy reference* Read through them first to be sure you have no question before proceeding. If you do, please ask first.

**You will need to run all tools with Administrator Privilege **

Next Step
Use of P2P (Person to Person) file sharing programs

I notice there are signs of one or more P2P (Person to Person) File Sharing Programs on your computer.

BitComet 0.62

Please read the Guidelines for P2P Programs where we explain why it's not a good idea to have them. Please remove it before we can continue any further. Post back when you have done it so we can continue the cleaning process.

NOTE: Even if you are using a safe P2P program, it is only the program that is safe. You will be sharing files from uncertified sources, and these are often infected. The bad guys use P2P filesharing as a major conduit to spread their wares.

Next Step
Please download a free anti-virus software (for personal use), from one these excellent vendors

1) Antivir PersonalEditionClassic
-Free anti-virus software for Windows.
-Detects and removes more than 50,000 viruses. Free support.
2) avast! 4 Home Edition
-Anti-virus program for Windows.
-The home edition is freeware for noncommercial user.
3) AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition
- Free edition of the AVG anti-virus program for Windows.
- Available for single computer use for home and non commercial use.

It is strongly recommended that you run only one anti virus program at a time. Having more than one anti virus program active in memory uses additional resources and can result in program conflicts and false virus alerts.

Once downloaded, please install the program following it's on screen directions. Allow it to do a scan of your entire system and note down if it finds anything and the location, as you did in your last post.

Second Step

Download and Run Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. please copy and paste the log into your next reply.
  • If you accidentally close it, the log file is saved here and will be named like this: C:\Documents and Settings\<your username>\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt
  • Please be sure all other windows and programs are closed and work saved. This is in case MBAM needs to reboot as soon as scan is finished to complete removal of some files.

Third Step
Please run HijackThis and save a new log

Post logs
MBAM log
New HijackThis log
Anything the new Anti Virus program found
Which Anti Spyware programs you paid for, as we should remove the extras.

Thank you

Due to a lack of response, this topic is now closed.

If you still require help, please open a new thread in the Infected? Virus, malware, adware, ransomware, oh my! forum, include a fresh FRST log, and wait for a new helper.
