Strangely it's only Firefox that is redirecting but it also seems to be stopping Spybot, Kaspersky and AdAware from updating their definitions. I've never looked at a HiJack This log before but there were a couple of things that looked suspicious to me. I thought I'd consult an expert before I started deleting entires though. Thanks in advance!

Remove one of your Anti Virus programs.

You are operating multiple Anti Virus programs on your computer:

avast!
Kaspersky Antivirus

It is NOT safe to have more than one anti-virus installed on a system, and that doing so not only does not provide better protection, it will actually cause additional problems. Anti-virus programs patch into the system kernel. Having more than one anti-virus patching into the system kernel will not only destabilize a system, it can corrupt system files and it WILL cause crashes! You MUST remove all but one anti-virus program.



Disable Windows Defender

From your log i can see this that you are running a Windows Defender. This might interfere with fixes we are about to do so we need to disable it. To disable your Windows Defender Real-time Protection.

• Open Windows Defender
• Click Tools
• Click General Settings
• Scroll down to Real Time Protection Options
• Uncheck Turn on Real Time Protection (recommended)
• Close Windows Defender

Note: Once your log is clean you can re-enable Windows Defender Real Time Protection.



Disable Ad-Aware Ad-Watch

Please disable Ad-Aware Ad-Watch as it may interfere with the fix.

• Right click on the Ad-Watch icon in the system tray ()
• Select Goto Settings.
• Click on Status on the left.
• On your right hand side, click once on each of the section to turn the green tick into a red cross.
• Click on RegShield on the left.
• On your right hand side, click once on each of the section to turn the green tick into a red cross.
• Click on Settings on the left.
• Click once on Load Ad-Watch at startup to turn the green tick into a red cross.
• Minimize Ad-Watch.
• Right click on the Ad-Watch icon again and select Close Ad-Watch.
• You will be prompted if you want to shut down Ad-Watch. Click Yes.
• Reboot your machine for the changes to take effect.

Once your log is clean you can re-enable those settings in Ad-Aware Ad-Watch.



Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.

• Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
• Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
• When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
• When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
  • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
• Then click Finish.
• MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
• On the Scanner tab:
  • Make sure the Perform Full Scan option is selected.
  • Then click on the Scan button.
• If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
• The scan will begin and Scan in progress will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
• When the scan is finished, a message box will say The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found.
• Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
• Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
• Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
• When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below)
• The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
• Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.


random's system information tool (RSIT)

• Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from HERE and save it to your desktop.
• Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
• Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
• Once it has finished, two logs will open:
  
  • log.txt (<<will be maximized)
  • info.txt (<<will be minimized)
• Post both of these logs in your next reply (Sometimes you have to make several post to get the logs posted.)

Hello Biohazard

I got itchy feet and ended up deleting the stuff that I thought was suspicious and it fixed my machine. Whoop!!

I'll fill you in on the problem and the fix just in case you get another user with this problem. At first, when the virus hit my computer a lot of my services wouldn't start which included Kaspersky so I couldn't even attempt to remove the malware with it. I downloaded Avast and rebooted in safe mode and managed to remove the virus that was preventing my services from running.

I could see that a trojan kept trying to re-generate itself but I managed to quarantine this using AV software. However, none of my definition updates would work for defender, Kaspersky, AdAware or any other similar software. I also noticed on Google that the results being returned were not the actual URLs of the sites listed. Instead they were in the format "www.google.com?click" followed by a load of query string parameters and about 50% of the time the link would redirect to a totally unrelated site.

I started up "HiJack This" and saw in the add/remove programs list a program called "Connect". I researched it and came to the conclusion that this was bad and removed it. I then removed the following entries from the registry:
