I have two trojan horses on my computer. I would like to know where these types typically come from, but aside from that, I want to save my computer rather than restoring it. I don't know how long the viruses have been on here, but if I could find out I could also do a system restore. Any help here would be swell. I downloaded Malwarebytes last night and did a full scan. It didn't come up with anything. Neither does Spybot S&D. When I did a scan today with HJT, I had changed the options so that it checks problems (but I did not delete anything...because everything was checked). Avast had the viruses in quarantine and I deleted them, but I'm sure that with a virus like a trojan horse it is not gone at all. Please help.

Hello! :hello2: and welcome to the Malware Removal forums.
I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research so please be patient while I work on your log and I will post back here with any recommendations.

  • I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

Is there any reason in particular which makes you think your computer is still infected? Is Avast still finding infections?

If you can, please post the report from Avast.

Step 1:
Download at your desktop DDS from one of the links below:

Link 1
Link 2
  • Right click the tool and select Run as Administrator to run it.
  • A black Screen will open, just read the contents and do nothing.
  • When the tool finish it will open 2 reports.
  • Copy/paste both reports back here and remove DDS from your desktop.

oh, and avast has not found anymore infections, but i am still hearing the sounds of a pop up window, even when i am not on the internet. it is like a clicking sound, and nothing pops up. this is not normal to my computer. besides, with my past experience with avast, viruses may be deleted but if they were there for long enough and infected other files, they come back. i will run another scan and let you know.

do you know what this type of virus typically does? are any of my files safe right now?

REMOVE P2P PROGRAMS

IMPORTANT I notice there are signs of one or more P2P (Person to Person) File Sharing Programs on your computer.

BitTorrent
LimeWire 5.1.2
Any other P2P program

Please read the Guidelines for P2P Programs where we explain why it's not a good idea to have them.

Note: Even if you are using a "safe" P2P program, it is only the program that is safe. You will be sharing files from uncertified sources, and these are often infected. The bad guys use P2P filesharing as a major conduit to spread their wares.

Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and uninstall the programs listed above (in red) NOW.

When you have removed them, restart your computer and run DDS as Admin again and post the logs.

There's nothing standing out.

Run Kaspersky Online AV Scanner
Note: Internet Explorer should be used.

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.
  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
    • Archives
    • Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan and then put the kettle on!
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  • Save this report to a convenient place like your Desktop. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Copy and paste the report into your next reply along with a fresh HiJackThis log and a description of how your PC is behaving.

ok, sorry for taking so long. An analysis of my computer. Well, it's malfunctioning quite a bit. Often, Firefox will refuse to open (it will give the busy signal for about a second then stop). When I bring up task manager and look at system processes (or whatever it may be called), it shows Firefox as running and responding, but it never comes up. In this situation, Internet Explorer will open, but is pretty much unresponsive. My first check for the unresponsiveness was the internet, but my modem is running fine, as is the router. This could be Windows malfunctioning on its own, but I don't know. The pop up sounds that I described earlier are gone though. I did research and found that trojan viruses are single files that do not reproduce or infect, but I had a worm on here before that I may or may not have gotten rid of. It has not given me problems since I deleted it with Avast. If you need to know more, I'll try to get back to you ASAP.

Kaspersky:

Internet Explorer is not allowing me to use the online scanner. When I click on the link to scan online, nothing happens, no busy signal or anything. Can I use Firefox?

Your computer is pretty low on RAM and as Vista is a fairly resource intensive OS there is a good chance of performance issues.

Note: You can use either Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox for this scan. You will however need to disable your current installed Anti-Virus, how to do so can be read here.

Vista users: You will need to to right-click on the either the IE or FF icon in the Start Menu or Quick Launch Bar on the Taskbar and select Run as Administrator from the context menu.

  • Please go here then click on: Image
Note: If using Mozilla Firefox you will need to download esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe when prompted then double click on it to install.
All of the below instructions are compatible with either Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox.
  • Select the option YES, I accept the Terms of Use then click on: Image
  • When prompted allow the Add-On/Active X to install.
  • Make sure that the option Remove found threats is NOT checked, and the option Scan archives is checked.
  • Now click on Advanced Settings and select the following:
    • Scan for potentially unwanted applications
    • Scan for potentially unsafe applications
    • Enable Anti-Stealth Technology
  • Now click on: Image
  • The virus signature database... will begin to download. Be patient this make take some time depending on the speed of your Internet Connection.
  • When completed the Online Scan will begin automatically.
  • Do not touch either the Mouse or keyboard during the scan otherwise it may stall.
  • When completed select Uninstall application on close if you so wish, make sure you copy the logfile first!
  • Now click on: Image
  • Use notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\ESET\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt.
  • Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic.
Note: Do not forget to re-enable your Anti-Virus application after running the above scan!

Run HijackThis again and post that log along with the online scan results.

Due to lack of response, this topic is now closed.

If you still require help, please open a new thread in the Infected? Virus, malware, adware, ransomware, oh my! forum, include a fresh FRST log, and wait for a new helper.
