Access Is Denied Error When Saving services.msc options

Unread postby n8galicia » June 2nd, 2009, 12:07 am

Hello, my computer has recently been displaying a "Windows Firewall" box that says my computer has been infected with the Win32.Brontok virus. All the usual option boxes are grayed out and the only one available to click on says "Get Protection Now" and it leads to a fake anti-virus website. I am not sure if this is related but, around the same time I noticed that my Windows Updates were no longer downloading so I tried it manually. I got an error on the website that said my BITS was disabled. When I tried enabling it through services.msc, I got an "Access Is Denied" message when I tried to save my options. I am using the free McAfee suite offered through Comcast.net in conjunction with Windows Defender.

Hello, and Image to the Malware Removal forums.
My name is Michael I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

HijackThis logs can take some time to research, so please be patient with me. I know that you need
your computer working as quickly as possible, and I will work hard to help see that happen.

Please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:
  • I will working be on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • If after 5 days you have not responded to this topic, it will be closed, and you will need to start a new one.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • All of my posts need to be checked by a teacher, so please be patient while I attempt to remove your malware.

Make an uninstall list using HijackThis
To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:
  • Start HijackThis
  • Click on the Config button
  • Click on the Misc Tools button
  • Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
  • Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Save the file to your desktop.

Please post this log on your next reply.

Thanks, Michael

Re: Access Is Denied Error When Saving services.msc options

Unread postby MikeSwim07 » June 5th, 2009, 4:19 pm

Your System is infected with Virut!!

Virut is a file infecting virus which is able to modify itself each and every time it runs. In addition, when it infects, sometimes it will destroy the file it tries to latch onto. For these reasons, you really can't truly fix Virut. You will need to format/reinstall the operating system on this machine.

More information: http://free.avg.com/66558
AVG Technologies wrote:
There are bugs in the viral code. When the virus produces infected files, it also creates non-functional files that also contain the virus.

Network Associates wrote:
W32/Virut.h is a polymorphic, entry point obscuring (EPO) file infector with IRC bot functionality. It can accept commands to download other malware on the compromised machine.

It appends to the end of the last section of executable (PE) files an encrypted copy of its code. The decryptor is polymorphic and can be located either: Immediately before the encrypted code at the end of the last section At the end of the code section of the infected host in 'slack-space' (assuming there is any)
At the original entry point of the host (overwriting the original host code)

Miekiemoes, one of our team members here and an MS-MVP, additionally has a blog post about Virut.

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

How do I respond to a possible identity theft and how do I prevent it

Backdoor Trojans are the most dangerous and most widespread type of Trojan. Backdoor Trojans provide the author or "master" of the Trojan with remote "administration" of victim machines. Unlike legitimate remote administration utilities, they install, launch and run invisibly, without the consent or knowledge of the user. Once installed, backdoor Trojans can be instructed to send, receive, execute and delete files, harvest confidential data from the computer, log activity on the computer, change settings on the computer and more.

Please read this article by Roger A. Grimes on Remote Access Trojans it will give you an Idea of the severity of the type of infection you have.

What are Remote Access Trojans and why are they dangerous
Because of the severity and the capabilities of this type of virus, (it cannot be known what changes to your system it has made or if it opened up other ways into your system) The only responsible course of action I can advise is to reformat your computer and reinstall windows.

I suggest you to start backup all of your valuable data/documents/pictures/movies/songs/etc..
Do NOT backup any applications/installers and Do NOT backup any .exe/.scr/.htm/.html/.xml/.zip/.rar files...
This because these files may be infected as well. If you back them up and replace them afterwards, it will infect your computer again.

Read here for instructions how to format and reinstall Windows: How to reformat and reinstall Windows

If you need any help with this please let me know and I will be glad to give you some assistance or if you have any other questions please feel free to ask.

So is reformatting my machine the only way to get rid of Virut then?

Yes, it is the only safe way to. Virut infects executable files and it is almost impossible to fix this. If we accidentally leave one of these infected files on your computer and you run it, your computer will become totally infected again.

If you have any questions on reformatting and reinstalling, please ask.

Please go to one of these forums and tell them that you have an unrecoverable Polymorphic virus and ask them how to reformat and reinstall without the XP disk for your computer.

As the resolution of this issue requires a reformat, and referrals to forums that can assist with that process have been made, this topic will now be closed.
