thanks for all you help...

i don't know why, but it seems like i'm still having issues.

do you think it could be an AOL issue? could that be why the computer sounds like its working too hard? it sounds like the fan is always running, sometimes going into "overdrive" (fan gets louder and sounds like its working really hard)...

I would sign up at one of the good Systems/Hardware sites. The issue with the fan sounds like a cooling or related dust problem of some kind. I can recommend these:
